Meanwhile... my 2009 27" iMac freezes up roughly every two-three weeks, and has been for the last year at least.
It's usually exacerbated if I leave my self logged in an girlfriend switches to her user account, leaving mine logged in in the background. But even with just a single user logged in, either user, It seems to lock up twice a month.
OS X needs a focus on reliability again, like snow leopard was.

No such probs here for me on an MBP Retina or a couple of MBP Airs, with any of the OS's mentioned. Probs with Twitter app stalls until the latest version, but that is about it. Third party prob?

The Twitter app stalls are related to that app itself, which started with their 4.x update. I've had those stalls since day one of that app update. Not related to OS X at all.

My 2013 MacBook Air has been 100% stable with 10.11.4.

No problem with my Macbook Pro 13 Late 2013 and 10.11.4...
I hope that they fix it for all...

What I'm saying is this.
OSX is no better or worse than any other operating system.

In my personal experience using a Mac for work and Windows for development. Crashes are becoming more frequent on the mac. Much more frequent.

I beg to differ. Computer technology has become more and more advanced and sophisticated. I am far more productive on a Mac than on a Windows computer. Navigation around the OS, from app to app, text handling, networking, printing, peripheral compatibility, sleep behaviour, keyboard layout, trackpad design, built on UNIX ... these are just some of the things that make a Mac superior to most PCs running Windows.

It's becoming increasingly difficult for Apple to continue to add features while keeping everything working 100% smoothly. I give them tremendous credit for achieving what they've achieved to date. They will resolve this latest compatibility glitch, and then people will forget about it. Macs will continue to retain the "best computing experience" available for [most] developers.

Not new, the freezes started happening with my iMac (27-inch, Late 2009) with a
3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and an ATI Radeon HD 4670 256 MB graphics chip running Yosemite and El Capitan two to three years ago. The latest with El Cap was the screen going black. After PRAM reset the black screen issue seems to be resolved.

I remember back in '03 or so, I used to challenge myself to get OS X to freeze. The only time it did was when when I pulled a USB modem out of my computer it will crash.

it scares me that Apple has grown into a phone company that also builds computer, not a computer company that expanded into smartphones and media.

Assume you know all the in's and out's of cross-functional dev teams at 1 Infinite Loop? (Was obviously being factitious.)

I like to crawl in through the air ducts and do a daily register of who is working where each day

Everything you just stated is simply your opinion. Many will disagree with it and rightfully so.

Sorry but I couldn't stop laughing after reading this.

OS X has been slowly turning into a turd since Snow Leopard.
Stability problems have been a major issue for a few years now.
Apple is losing their way with OS X. Sometimes less is more. If you cannot successfully implement a feature into an OS, don't release it.
Microsoft learned this the hard way and seem to be getting better lately. Apple is now heading down the very path MS used to follow.

I have been a die hard Mac fan going back to my first SE 30 right after high school. Ever since 2011, OS X has gone downhill in build quality with every release. These issues have been well documented right here on this very forum.

My 13" 2012 Macbook Air just froze up yesterday again. I though it was just getting old.

Apple is slipping. I am not replacing it as the new Airs, four years newer, are not much better. It is a shame, but I guess this happens to most companies, they get so big and then just blow up.

No, but maybe it's an indication that they're diversifying away from their core competency-OS and hardware. What did Henry Ford say- you can have any color you want as long as it's black.... well you can have any Macbook you want in any color you want but you'll need new proprietary adapters because we can only fit 1 USB-C port. Look at the shell of what HP once was, DEC is gone, Sun has been folded into Oracle. What happened to the "you're giving everyone back 5 seconds of their lives if you can make boot time 5 seconds faster" mentality?

They've been diversifying for a while now; it ain't Apple Computer no more.

I don't mind the no port thing, wires everywhere drives me mental. I try to have everything wireless apart from once in a blue moon when I hook up a usb hd

You know what makes this even worse. For some reason people expect windows machines to die on them at any moment.
Ol reliable Mac on the other hand never crashes.

That's the lie.

While you're at it check out the tweets from hundreds of students losing all their finals work due to some random freeze and this faith in the awesome power of Mac!
Rule #1 SAVE SAVE SAVE!

Have not experienced any crashes on the 13" rMBP, but did notice the fans go up while watching videos on YouTube (no Flash installed) or offline on VLC. Good to know it's a bug, as I was quite puzzled.

Every complex OS crashes, including Mac OS X. To be fair on Apple, they are continuously trying to encourage people to switch to iOS with iPad Pros and feeling "sad" for people with older Macs. ;)

Please apple fix this! it keeps happening on my Late 2013 Retina Macbook Pro (15inch)

I've noticed some major issues related to Thunderbolt hubs as well. Graphics card will completely freeze the displays when plugged in. No idea what the issue is.

My Early 2013 13" pro was having system freezes daily. nothing would work except the mouse cursor. I found out that pressing command Q would quit safari, then everything seemed to run fine. Along with this I would get the black screen of nothing when trying to wake the computer up. The only thing to fix that was a hard reboot. All of these problems were on 10.11.4 betas. Now that Im running 10.11.5 everything is working as it should.

Apple needs to focus on stability and reliability again. I don't mind if OS X 10.12 is focused only in those aspects, and we get another Snow Leopard with all the features gained in last OS X iterations.

Heck, why not an LTS version every 2 years for those who want a truly reliable OS?

I think it's a sign that your girlfriend needs her own Mac ;)

I'm on Mountain Lion and will stay on it as long as possible. Yosemite and El Capitan are a train wreck and ugly as hell and Mavericks is slower than Mountain Lion.
Snow Leopard will always be the best. The days before the iCloud junk that clogs up the OS.

Can't we just go back to the way things were in the past, without the fancy stuff and sticking to the basics? I've never seen so many bugs in my life with an OS Apple has put out since its released El Capitan. I will not install it. I want nothing to do with it.
