its a lottery

I got my 12' 11 inch MBA and the screen was yellow and dull compared to my 11' 13 inch MBA. It had the AOU screen... called APple and they sent me a new MBA and it has the LG. The LG screen is heads and shoulders better than the AOU and I'm very happy with it. I'm confident that LG and Samsung both make excellent screens, I'm sure that AOU can as well... it's just on the whole Samsung probably has better QC and statistically less of a chance of getting a bum screen.

13" , 128SSD, 8GB RAM
LG screen.

I was worried about the screen (after reading this thread) before I saw the machine. Its beautiful. I calibrated it. Will not return

Why is this such a big deal?

Tried AnandTech's color profile. Does anyone else notice when scrolling on a webpage with a white background and black text, the text looks green? So far I like the MacRumors Custom, although it is a little darker.

Yes, I thought I was the only one.

I had no trouble with the Macrumors and Anadtech profiles - both downloaded with .icc extensions. This one doesn't, and manually appending it doesn't work. Apologies if I am being a dumbass.

I can't get that profile to work either. So you're not alone. Not sure how others got it working.

Having seen examples of all 3, I'd say LG and AUO are on par with each other.

I got the 2012 11 inch, first one had AUO and it was yellowish...returned it and new one has an LG.. the difference is night and day. The LG has much more color and no yellowish hue. Much more contrast than the AUO altho not as crisp as my 13 inch 2011 which has a Samsung screen. I think that all 3 make good screens, just that LG and Samsung are more likely to produce a "good" screen than AUO. I think all three screen range in quality and performance. You can get a "good one" from either 3.

I actually changed my opinion afterwards to say that the lg was worse, after having used both screens for a longer period, I preferred the AUO. Mainly, as I felt it had better contrast, and readability was a huge problem on the LG, even after calibration.

Just grabbed a 13" current model Air (at 10% discount :)). i5, 256 GB SSD, 4 GB RAM. Both screen and SSD are Samsung :), and I am pretty happy with the screen image as is.

Though after looking at it for a while, when I first go back to my old mid-2007 iMac its non-LED screen has a distinct yellowish tint to its whites after the crisp cleans whites of the current LED Air screens. Small price to pay.

Samsung – clearly better!

Just wanted to share my experience on the subject.

I ordered a maxed out MBA a couple of weeks ago from the Apple Store with the following specs: i7, 256GB, 8GB ram.

When recieved; I felt disappointed. That beautiful, vibrant and bright, display that I'd experienced in the local shop – just wasn't there. The colors were totally washed out and the black level was horrible in dark environments. Turns out, it had the LG lcd.

So, I shipped it back to Apple. There's no way I'd pay that kind of money for such a ****** display ...

Instead, I went to pick up the base model 13" at my local dealer, and what a difference! The Samsung is SO much better!

Sure, it differs from display to display. And sure, you could probably acchieve close to equal result with calibration. But out of the box – the difference is night and day!

I'm pretty newbie with this, can someone please help?... I am trying to improve the screen on my 2012 MBA air 11 inch. How do I install an icc colour profile? I have saved 3 profiles from this thread but when I open them in ColorSync Utility nothing seems to happen.

And I tried changing my profile in System Preferences > Display but when I click 'Open Profile' it just goes back to ColorSync Utility. I see nothing change and it doesn't seem to switch anything.

How do I save ICC profiles and switch easily between them? My only profile is the default "Color LCD" one showing.

Hi. I have an entry level 2012 13 inch Macbook Air with a LG Display. I did notice that colors were washed out and the contrast was poor. I am past the 2 week exchange/refund date. Also, i tried every single .icc file in this thread to find a solution.

Unfortunately, the main one in this thread looks nice but blacks/greys are too dark and there isn't much of a difference. There were a few others that were nice as well but colors seem distorted.

I do not want to have to buy calibration software to fix my screen. Also, the native calibration is very hard for me to follow the instructions.

Does anyone have a different .icc I can try to remedy my display issues?

Ok, so I´ve just got Macbook Air 13 with LG screen and... I´m happy. Colours are nice, resolution as well - 8/10. I just tried Anandtech custom color for LG display and it even makes it worse, I don´t know if I´ve got some good LG screen or anything but it looks great

I felt the same way about the Anandtech profile. Too warm. Out of the box my LG display was fine. I think the Macrumors one nicely boosts the contrast, though.

Just received my MBA 13" i7/8gb/256gb. Its a Samsung LCD and hard drive. Absolutely delighted with it! :)

Really bad viewing angles with Samsung display

Everyone is comparing contrast, but what about viewing angles?

I have a 13" 1.8/4/128 2012 with Samsung display and Toshiba SSD. I earlier had a 2/8/256 11" with LG display and Samsung SSD. The LG display bothered me immensely with the low contrast, but I immediately fixed it by calibrating it on my own. Didn't bother me after that.

With the Samsung display I haven't had to calibrate it at all. The factory settings seem fine. However, I'm becoming aware that the viewing angles seem particularly poor. I haven't noticed viewing angles this bad since my 2006 original white macbook.

Its ok from above and to the sides, but looking up to the screen, even a little, such as having the screen too open, immediately makes portions of the screen MUCH darker. Just reclining in my chair is enough to drastically change the look of the screen.

I sold my 2010 11" MBA so I can't compare to that anymore. My iPad3 has awesome viewing angles. No distortion from anywhere.

Is the LG display any better? Are all the Samsung's the same? I'm planning to head back to the store and compare to the others on display.

I have a 13 inch with i7, 256Gb, 8Bg ram. The SSD is samsung but the screen is LG. It is fine as it is is, no problems at all. I might do a slight contrast boost, but it is already fantastic nontheless

13" i5, 8/256, LG screen. Out of the box it was washed out, MacRumors profile made it very nice. Angles are fine. Keeping it.

This is interesting...my wife had her 17 inch Pro in for repair of the DVD drive and top case (backlight keyboard not working) and they chipped in a new display to make sure it would last her well beyond her 3 year AppleCare which is about to expire.

When she first looked at the new display she said it was dull looking, not as crisp, and less bright. I had not been aware of any 17 inch display issues but did the display check and found it is an LG. So I'd bet the previous one was a Samsung.

Is the Anandtech result that it's just a calibration issue that explains all differences between the two displays? If so, what's my best method for coming up with a good calibration for this LG display?

My LG MBA looks great out of the box.
I'm picky and have returned multiple LED Cinema Displays in the past to get the "perfect" one, so I'm not sure I'm buying this thread.

i recieved a LG display on my i5 8gb 256gb (samsung drive though)

I am content with the colors out of the box and it looks better with the macrumors profile.
