I did mean the screen hinge. It's off centered so when i close the lid, the whole top is off to the right just a tiny bit. Definitely not enough to bother me, but i'm just picky like that and noticed it.

Oh ok, so you have a misaligned case then? That sucks. My old white Macbook had that.

mine's like that too! VERY small bit off to the right. Really, you'd only notice if you ran your finger along the side with the screen closed. I'm picky like you too...and don't feel like dealing with the hassle of driving to the store and probably being told I can't return it, haha. Nothing else wrong with the 'book though. I love this little machine :)

It already smokes my soon to be sold 2.2 santa rosa mbp.

When is it coming?

:D I cannot bloody wait to get my Mac!

Don't forget to post something after you get it. I think we are all interested in hearing everyone's reviews.

I read where the OP said his shut down randomly. Ugh! What's that about. I feel bad hearing all these little minor imperfections, cause they wouldn't be minor to me. So far, I have zero complaints and can't find anything wrong.

Yesterday, it dawned on me that I hadn't tried to burn a disc or play a cd. It worked flawlessly.

Yeah i know what you mean... I'm already on number 4, so I don't wanna take anymore chances. :)

Is anyone else's HD making a little noise? Not neccesarily LOUD or CLICK, just the running wooosh.... My hearing may be over sensitive :)

Overall, i'm loving the performance!

So I am officially MacBookless now (I'm also exhausted and the Apple Store employees hate me).

I went to the apple Store last night to exchange my MacBook with 1 dead pixel. Here's a play-by-play of what happened:

Exchange 1: 2 dead pixels, and a cluster of 7-10 stuck pixels. They offered me another exchange.

Exchange 2: This one had a chip in the palmrest, and the screen was crooked. When the computer was closed, the screen hung out over the bottom case at an angle, and it was also crooked when open. They offered a "final" exchange. They handed me the box and basically told me to get out of the store.

Exchange 3: I checked this one out in my car before I drove home (I don't live near the store). It had a ton of dust behind the screen. Even my friend who was with me noticed all the dust before I said anything. It wasn't small pieces either, there were some big chunks of lint or something in there. Needless to say, I went back into the store. The employees couldn't argue with this. They may have just thought I was crazy before, but they couldn't deny anything this time. They offered me another "final" exchange. It looked fine to me, so I took it and left.

Exchange 4: Once I got this one home, I noticed the display was awful. It had the same display as my first unit (9c89), but it didn't look anywhere near as good. It was extremely washed out and had a nasty yellow tint. I decided this was enough. I called Apple and they told me I had to return it to the store I bought it from if I wanted a refund, so I drove all the way back to the Apple Store today and got my money back.

In the end, I tried out FIVE MacBooks, and all of them had problems (the least serious of which being a single dead pixel). I'm just going to wait a while, and then I think I'll order a MBP from amazon. Their lack of sales tax is a better deal than Apple's student discount anyway.

I thought all the hullabaloo about the new MacBook's display was just bs, but it's true. I'm sure there are some good displays out there, and if you manage to get one, it can be a great computer, but I'm definitely not comfortable with the crap shoot that it appears to be right now. I'm guessing that Apple is using components of lesser quality to offset the higher cost of manufacturing the new MacBooks.

I will say that I'm very impressed the Apple Store let me go through this many exchanges, but they weren't particularly polite about it.

I thought they offset the cost of the new casing by jacking the price of the Macbook up.

You know...you could have probably run the screen calibration wizard and cleared up that yellow/washed outness...I know I did....

I did that, but the results were pretty crummy at best. It was clearly a problem with the screen. For $1700, I'm just not satisfied with a subpar product.

I'm not saying every MacBook is subpar, but the ones I tried sure were.

I finally picked up my MacBook!

Wahooooo, I finally got mine!!! Such a long wait. I've been wanting to switch to Mac for a long long time and let my poor stuttering Fujitsu Siemens laptop retire gracefully but have only just recently had the cash to do so. After researching and researching - and being sure I was going to get a MacBook Pro for the biggest screen until somebody here on MR pointed out I could get an external monitor, duh - and going insane from the rumours and going insane again once the new revisions were released and they were so different and visiting the Apple Store about a zillion (okay, five) times... *deep breath* ...this evening I came home with my little box of awesomeness.

And it's really great.

There are lots of things I'm getting used to. All my old PC habits keep banging their fists on the table and crying out in protest, and there is stuff about XP that I've realised I quite like, such as being able to preview GIF files and having my folders give me little thumbnails of what's in them, but the benefits are so far outweighing those little complaints by a mile. This thing is really lovely to use.

A few specifics:

KEYBOARD: loving it, and it's very different to what I'm used to, but backlighting and gorgeousness and softness, oh my! I'm a writer - or trying to be - so it's really quite important that the keyboard is right for me and after four hours of intermittent use I swear my typing speed and accuracy has improved! The spacebar is a little loud, it's true.
SCREEN: This was major concern for me when the new revisions were revealed at the keynote. I posted on many a thread jabbering about how I hate glossy displays and can't cope without antiglare. Well, turns out I could have saved myself all that worry and stress because reflections there be none. At least not here in my averagely-lit home as opposed to the 'brilliance' of the Apple Store. I am yet to visit any decently (or naturally) lit cafes, however. Oh, and dust etc. really likes this screen. Or maybe it's just more obvious because it's glass. Quite looking forward to getting my external monitor however so I can get up to some good resolutions.
TRACKPAD: Ooh, space! Having played on it a little in the Store I thought I would like it, and I do, but it's just a bit different to what I'm used to. But the gestures are great. I'm getting a tonne of use out of the four-fingered swipes and the application switcher.
ENCLOSURE: Feels and looks gorgeous and solid. I'm getting paranoid about dirt, though, so may have to get some kind of skin! I read the threads about loose battery/HD covers with concern but mine doesn't have this issue. Haven't taken the cover off yet though and I'm kind of scared to! It's been on for about five hours and is a little warm but it's nowhere near as hot as my old machine. iStat Pro tells me my fans are currently at just under 2000RPM with the CPU at 46C and the base enclosure around 29C, running Firefox and the Finder.
And it's quiet! My old laptop is on the other side of the room and sounds like it's about to take off but this little guy has barely uttered a whisper in five hours of transferring files and installing applications.

I do still have questions and niggles and wonderings so I'll definitely be searching the forums, but consider me a very satisfied switcher. Still with a fondness for my other little guy but wow, I will not miss waiting thirty seconds for a folder to open or lugging its 6KG+ around the place. Yay, MacBooks! I bloody love you. But I really must go to bed now, even though you tell me I have five hours and twenty minutes battery life left. (You little beauty!)

I wish I'd taken more photos after I'd turned the thing on, I was just too darned excited by that whole "WELCOME!" video and setting it all up that I forgot to capture the many "ooooh" and "wow, what's that?!" and "I bloody love you!" moments. Ah well.

A few photos

:D

OK, I have heard it all now. Five hours and twenty minutes? I simply cannot believe that, sorry.

Don't hate! :p haha! My MB as shown me that before.. of course, barely anything was running. But it's not unheard of.

Granted, all I was doing was Firefoxing and had only just unplugged the thing but it's true, I tells ya! Unless it was lying to me. Maybe I should watch the real clock instead of just the battery clock. Will try and get a screencap next time I unplug, (which will probably be when I start the whole calibration deal).

Got mine today, I'm relatively excited since:

1) This is my first laptop in 3 years, my old Dell was an embarassment
2) Its made of freaking aluminum, looks great beside my black TJ09 gaming computer:)
3) Its my absolute first time using a mac since grade 8 for me, so roughly 8 years since I sat down and actually USED a mac product(aside from my iPhone which doesn't count)

After freaking myself right out reading all the negative posts on these forums, I have to say that I am relieved in a really really big way. My machine seems to be free of dust, slanty keys, crooked trackpad, loose battery cover and dead pixels(exhaustive 30 minute check on a myriad of colours).

Its a bit of a change from Windows to be sure, but I've used a number of OS's in my lifetime, and aside from not knowing a few things, I am already comfortable on this machine. Gotta admit that the installation process for applications so far is far superior to the Windows method, though I do somewhat miss my start menu:).

Can't wait to let my friends get a look at it, even if they will hate on me for becoming an Apple "fanboi" as they see it:)

No1451,
Congrats on your buy!.. and good that you have no issues.

Just wanted to know how do you feel the display is? Specifically, the blackness of the blacks?

If you think its alright, which panel do you have?

Thanks

The blacks are absolute trash. Plain and simple, black looks like a really deep purple/blue.

But that being said, how often do I sit at my computer and watch a plain black screen? Yeah, never, so I can live with it easily:).
My panel is the 9C8C, no idea what that means but I know that its good enough for my uses, if I want better picture I have a really nice Samsung sitting upstairs that I will plug into if the need really arises.

Now to spend even more money and buy a mouse for this thing, trackpads, even a nice big one, aren't that much of a pleasure to use, my wrist sounds like a freaking cement mixture from the weird angles.

How do you find out what display you have?1

It was actually 6hr 21min with nothing running but Finder, before I activated Grab and opened iPhoto (before I realised I didn't need iPhoto to crop) ;)

First post updated!

OK, I updated the first post:

  1. Instructions were added on how to tell what type of LCD panel you have.
  2. I also added instructions on how to upgrade your memory, including pictures of how I took my RAM to 4GB last night.

Nicely done! So are the 320GB HD's in the 2.4 Ghz MB a 7200 RPM HDs?!

I received my 2.4/4gb/250gb macbook yesterday

Battery cover looks fine, display is great, keys seem straight and I love the backlight. My previous laptop was an xps m1210 and I can easily say the new macbook is 10x the laptop inside and out.

I'm having a great time with gestures and adjusting to Leopard. Quicksilver, terminal, gestures, and I am a happy man.

Elated...
:D

The HD in the 2.4Ghz MB is a 250GB/5400rpm that is not worth upgrading at this time because the faster 320GB drive is too incrementally bigger and the 500GB is too "green" right now. :)
