To continue my previous post, I've had a bit more quality time with my new Macbook and I LOVE it! This new track pad is wonderful. I'm learning to use the finger moves and it's just awesome.

I still do not understand the issue with the screen that some are concerned about, but it's not an issue for me.

The back lit keyboard is phenomenal. Touch, response, and visual are perfect.

Though this is a 13" it feels lighter than my previous PB 12". Maybe it is, I've not looked at the specs.

Last night I made some changes to increase security on my Macbook and it worked jut as advertised.

The one lone issue I've had is not even Apple related that I can tell, but it won't install Hyperwords for Firefox 3.6. It says something about it being able to run programs so it won't install it. I'll work more on this over the weekend.

After looking through all of these posts, I am amazed at some of the points raised on these notebooks, they are a premium priced product, and should be of a very high standard.
I think that the upgrade of my white MacBook is best left on hold for the time being.

Walt Mossberg in the WSJ this morning writes this in his review of the MacBook:

How did he get that much battery life out of a MacBook? Even if I turn brightness down all the way to the last visible stop, I only get 3:30. Anyone *ever* get to five hours?

Yesterday I was web browsing and looking through some pdf files with AIM on, and brightness at around 50%, and I got around 5 and 1/2 hours from a 100% charge.

I got the 2.0. Was updating iTunes in bed last night without a lot of light. I find it fine for typing, but I only look at the keys if I get lost.

The keys are a bit harder to see than my old Dell Inspiron in low light. Though I think the screen throws enough light to find your way unless you're a very bad typist.

I've also got slanted function keys and the battery cover is slightly raised on one side underneath, but these things are minor. I'm not exchanging for that.

The enter key doesn't always register a press, but I'm not sure if that's me not being used to the keyboard and hitting it only on the side or if the key is a bit dodgy.

Edit: A bit of typing in TextEdit and watching when I don't register a press and it looks like I'm landing almost between the ' key and the enter key. I think I just need to get used to the keyboard.

Backlit keyboard

I'm coming from a Macbook so I have a quick question about the backlit keyboard...

It seems like I can only get it to stay on all the time or turn it off (with the F keys). If I check the "Illuminate keyboard in low light conditions" in System Preferences it turns the backlight on even in lighted conditions. When I'm in low light it dims and as soon as I'm lighted conditions it brightens...

Any advice on how to use the backlight so that its off in lighted conditions but illuminates in low light?

I notice you have the 2.0 model...how was typing in the dark? ;)
Did you wish you had spent $300 more?

(I ask because I can't quite justify buying the 2.4, and am leaning towards the 2.0)

:)

In the dark, it is a little tricky. The screen does a decent job if you are at the right angle. But I don't know if I have $300 of regret. :p For $200 I would have done it, but $300 was ridiculous. :)

So typing in the dark, pretty good if you are an ok touch typist. Not so much if you aren't, unless you are sitting at a table. Or want a super bright screen. Absolutely not as easy to type on in the dark as a white-book. :)

Perhaps they should use a more reflective paint for the keys?

typing was not bad at all, i made quite a few posts that night, however, in really low light it can be difficult and i tilt the screen down just a little for it to illuminate the kb.

i want a backlit kb but i could not justify it.

happy with $300 in my pocket towards a new backpack / BT kb and mightymouse. and laptop stand.

Edit: and one of these:

I finally got mine. It's a baseline 2.4 GHz without any upgrades. When DDR3 ram get more affordable I might upgrade to 4GB. I waited around 4 month to get it, but was really only able to buy it around mid September. The wait was awful, but I'm quite happy that I waited for the update. The new Books are gorgeous and the backlit keyboard is sooo great. I always through that 13.3'' was way too small, but now I find it to be pretty much perfect for a little notebook like my beauty! It's also soo small, it's a little hard to imagine it, and even worse to think that the air is even smaller and light.

So far I didn't get any major defect. I got some "slanted keys" but it's so minor that I can live with this. Some little scratch too, but they all came away with some hard rubbing. I also didn't touch the battery cover, since it fit perfectly so far, I don't want to cause any damage to it just for the sake of curiosity. In short: My Macbook is nearly perfect. I'm soo HAPPY :D

I just got mine today...my spacebar is loud as heck (I think I might need to break it in?) but other than that I think I'm in love!

mine is loud too. yes i am hoping we just have to break it in, but i have found that if you try to hit the button near the middle bottom, it is quieter.

Clickety space bar...

First mine does not seem abnormal at all. I wonder if it all seems more amplified given the aluminum enclosure rather than a cushiony plastic?

Its Here!!!

I finally got my new mb on monday. It is definitely amazing. No major defects....that I have noticed. I did get some slanted keys too, but its not big deal because the key work and they stay in place. SO, I am really happy. By the end of the day.....my crappy Windows based Sony VAIO will go to my parents.....they still insist that Windows is "awesome" and Macs arent that good..........I beg to differ Mom and Dad!!! LOL This MB RULES!!!!:D

How do you make a poll topic? I don't understand... I can choose how many poll answers I want to make, but how can I enter this answers???

Hope someone can help me with this, I want to make an interesting poll.

Re slanted keys and loose battery cover;

All the MBs Ive seen so far have this and I guess it doesnt bother me that much but I do have a question; If Apple admits this is an actual flaw can I go in and have it replaced where I bought it? I DONT want to ship it off and have to wait for weeks to get a new one.

My batterycover sits quite flush with the case even after removing it and putting it back...

Apart from the keys I have no complaints with this machine...its quiet, fast and the screen on mine looks great. :D

You are correct: PowerBook G4 (12-inch) weighs 4.6 pounds (2.1 kg), while the Alu MacBook weighs 4.5 pounds (2.04 kg).

Good stuff...thanks for the tip! I don't want to have my spacebar making too much noise in the library!

same here, but even with this method it's still noisier than the other keys by a large amount. i know that if i were to bring this to my lecture hall, it would be very annoying for anyone around me.

My mb 2.4 should be in Monday or Tuesday. Decided to BTO upgrade to 4GB so its en route from China->Alaska->Memphis->me
I cant wait, really anxious :D

I sold my dell xps m1210 last week on ebay and this will be my replacement. Looking forward to having bash and using Leopard.

To everyone pointing out the flaws in their new macbooks, I am detail orientated and obsessive too. Just think of a minor flaw such as slanted keys or a loose battery cover as something that adds character. ;)

I bought my first macbook on Friday.
It had three stuck dust particles behind the glass.

Exchanged for a new one yesterday afternoon. The second unit's screen was chipped at the top of the bezel so I returned it later that night.

The third one's screen is fine but this one has more crooked keys than the last two that I had. I guess I will keep this one.

What in the world is going on with their QC? These are not $20 disposable toys. This is making me think twice about buying any time soon, and I really want the 2.4.

I made an appt on Sunday to take mine in because of its dead pixel. Hopefully they'll give me an exchange and let me check it before I leave the store.

I've got some crooked keys too, but whatever. The keys on my old MB were crooked after I had the palmrest replaced, so that's nothing new to me.
