got my first ever mac on monday, macbook alu! :)

have been wanting to move to mac for a long time! and i felt that this time was right when the new macbooks came out. I was a bit unsure bout the new design at first, but now i love it! I was also a bit unsure of os x leopard at first, but i'm used to it now and i love it! i'll never go back to windows xp/vista. infact i hate using my vista n xp computers now.

i have the 2.4ghz 2gb ram 250gb storage macbook. for the speed, i just can't get this damn thing to slow down or crash! which is good obviously :D 2gb of ram seems fine! a few tiny small lags here n there, but i don't think its worth upgrading to 4gb, however i may upgrade at another time. 250gb of storage, sounds good but you only really get 230 something gb im down to 205.4gb now after putting my songs/pictures/movies on the hard drive. had to convert the movies to .mp4 format, wasnt such a problem. photos transfered perfectly. however was a different story with the songs. i had to convert about 30 albums from .wma to .mp3 before itunes accepted them and then had to rename all 30 albums worth of tracks manually! it was hell, took me a day or two. infact i got this on monday and today is the first day ive managed to properlly test out os x for myself.

other things ....the screen, i love it, except that fingerprints just seem to be magnetic towards it! other than that its great! the keyboard, is easy to type on! and i love the backlights! my I key seems to be a little squinty but no big deal! another big plus is that they haven't worn out one tiny bit after 4 days of continuous use. same goes for the palm rest! my vista laptop is all worn out to pieces, eww!. I love the trackpad! its massive and u can do so much with it! i love it, its so smooth! doesn't feel like glass. i cringe at the very touch of a windows laptop mouse with its two little ugly buttons!

the battery. hmmm. first charge, it lasted forever! and then started to run out quickly, may just have been cause i was converting songs non stop! i'm calibrating the battery atm, and i have scheduled a reminded every month to calibrate it! need to make it last as long as possible! not bad performance out of the battery :) way better than my laptop any day!

the body gets awfully hot at times! it cools down when its plugged in, and burns away when its on battery mode. hmmm, very annoying, however i like the way the fans are designed to not be blocked, unlike windows computers!.

been a windows user for 7 years, a mac user for 4 days, basically ill never go back to windows again :) :p :apple: forever :)

What in the world is going on with their QC? These are not $20 disposable toys. This is making me think twice about buying any time soon, and I really want the 2.4.

Yes, the quality control is a little suspect on these new units. Nonetheless, you should just get it if you really want it. Even though it took three tries, I have no regrets in buying the macbook. If you get a defective unit just take it back like I did. Apple will gladly exchange it for a new one.

Just received my 2.4 GHz MacBook :)

It's flawless. No slanted keys, no bent lid, no loose battery panel.

Is my macbook used?

Hi everyone,

I just received my macbook today and I have a couple of questions (I read through this thread and I didn't see them asked):

First, if I click on FINDER > SERVICES > CHINESE TEXT CONVERTER is one of the options. Is this standard for English laptops?

Second, is there a way to find out how long your macbook has been in use?

I apologise in advance if my questions are silly or paranoid. I've never used a macbook before and I'm a broke student so I just want to make sure everything is above board.

Thanks

Well guys/gals...you can add another newbie here and a new MB Alum 2.4 owner to the family. :D

I got mine last Saturday and I can not stop playing with it.

I need help with finding a case for it. I know about the Incase...but I hear that these new units do not fit properly.
Thanks

It won't fit the hardshell case cause those are not out yet. But it does fit the neoprine sleeves. I have one and the fit is snug.

Congats, Enjoy and Welcome!!

Welcome to the Forum and Congratulations on making the switch.

Be prepared that there will be a period of withdrawal. You will find you have all kinds of empty time and it will feel foreign at first. No defragging, re-booting, re-starting, virus scanning to name a few. It's similar to empty nest syndrome... it takes a while to adjust to the fact that you can actually just work (or play)... an amazing concept.

thanks!

It seems that you are a popular person here.....AmIrite?;)

Instead of "popular" I think you mean chatty maybe? I love reading the different threads. I've learned so much from everyone. I feel like I find the real Genius' here. For me it's very relaxing to end the day doing a little research and reading.

Just in case you didn't read it twice the first time, online user forums always attract all the problem cases because that's what they're for -- to share information and find help.

Industry surveys show that manufacturers with the worst industry reps get about 5% of their products returned/repaired. Apple probably sold more than 250,000 MacBooks in the past week, so if they had a defect rate of 1-2%, which is what I estimate, about 2,500-5,000 bad MacBooks made it to buyers.

And of those, about 20 are on these forums complaining about their unfortunate experiences. But don't let this perception warp your vision. My MacBook is perfect and so are the 245,000 units that you will never hear about. ;)

I think that the keyboard slanted keys issue is much more widespread than 5%. This happened on all the macbooks in the apple store and the two that I had not to mention the loads of people here which I agree is a biased amount, but still likely more than 5%.

I just got my new 2.0GHz MacBook this afternoon, and so far, I love it! It feels solid and is noticeably lighter than the old one. Here are a few notes:

- Trackpad doesn't quite look like glass, but whatever it is, it feels great
- Multi-touch works very smoothly, and is easy to get used to
- New graphics are amazing
- Screen is brighter, and has more depth and color
- The speakers are A LOT louder and sound much better
- The pictures from Apple.com don't do it any justice. You have to see one of these in person to see just how thin it is
- A few of my keys are slanted, but it isn't a big deal at all
- Screen gathers fingerprints easily
- I had a 2.2GHz BlackBook, and though this one is only 2.0GHz, it feels faster
- It's almost 100% silent. I've run some 3D games, and the fans are barely audible. Also, the CD drive noise seems to be quieter
- It doesn't get as hot as my old BlackBook

Pleased that you finding it OK, its good to hear some good reports, I will upgrade my White MacBook sometime, when the quality reports are better

So now that the dust has settle and people have gotten all the mumbling and complaining out of the system ( :p ), how is everybody enjoying their new MB?!
I have to say WOOOW!! Definitely happier than I've ever been with a notebook...or a PC for that matter!! People who bash the screen are CRAZY, and though there are small issues (battery cover/screen hinge off to the left a slight bit) I think that overall this is a magnificent machine.

All of my friends just LOVE it, and think it's very elegant!! I have to agree :)

Taking my MB in to the Genius Bar later - the clicking HDD is starting to get on my wick. Hopefully they'll exchange it and if they do, the new one doesn't have something else wrong with it !

Wait, what's wrong with the hinge? Is this known to be a common problem?

He meant the battery cover, nothing is wrong with the hinge.

However, this morning for the first time ever, my MacBook crashed while sleeping. It was charging, so it didn't run out of battery power, if that's what you were thinking.

Let me know if anyone else suffers from these random shutdowns. I repaired permissions yesterday too, so system instability should not have happened now. :(

I did mean the screen hinge. It's off centered so when i close the lid, the whole top is off to the right just a tiny bit. Definitely not enough to bother me, but i'm just picky like that and noticed it.
