I wish I'd taken more photos after I'd turned the thing on, I was just too darned excited by that whole "WELCOME!" video and setting it all up that I forgot to capture the many "ooooh" and "wow, what's that?!" and "I bloody love you!" moments. Ah well.

A few photos

:D

Congrats! Nothing quite as fun to listen to as a MacJunkie with his latest purchase. Awesome.

Nicely done! So are the 320GB HD's in the 2.4 Ghz MB a 7200 RPM HDs?!

I upgraded to the 320 GB HD and it's 5400 RPM. 7400 RPM was not an option in the configuration.

"On my tough battery test, where I turn off all power-saving features and play an endless loop of music, the new MacBook lasted three hours and 53 minutes -- six minutes longer than the old one. That suggests that, in normal use, with power-saving on, you could achieve Apple's claim of five hours of battery life, or come close."

this is what walt mossberg got on his battery test my friend says he is getting the same

Thanks for posting, but I already quoted that earlier in this thread. Another person posted his battery meter showing 5:21 left, but I get 3:30 max with screen dimmed 50% and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on. I will try with both radios off and actually time it.

BTW, I've had this discussion many times before and seems that all members have batteries that last much longer than mine. Very suspicious.

Bluetooth drain your battery, so you might hit 5 hours if you remove it.

So is anyone else finding their HDD is parking its heads a lot, resulting in a small clicking sound coming from the right side of the trackpad? Seems to be a lot of people talking about it and it seems to be an OS X thing.

You will gain about 20 minutes by turning BT of you will not gain over an hour by turning BT of.

OK, I updated the first post:

  1. Instructions were added on how to tell what type of LCD panel you have.
  2. I also added instructions on how to upgrade your memory, including pictures of how I took my RAM to 4GB last night.

Thanks for all this, really useful. Cheers for running the thread!

My bluetooth is on and I'm easily getting 5+ hours...
We're talking pretty low brightness though, which I'm okay with since my room is lit like a dungeon.

No idea what sort of lifetime I will be getting, everywhere I;ve gone on campus today has fallen near a nicely situated outlet:).

Plan to do some testing in the next few days to see what sort of continuous usage I can expect from this baby.

Quick report on using VMware Fusion on the MacBook 2.4/4GB RAM: it runs totally silently with the fan holding steady at 2,001rpm. This is fantastic news because my IceBook would often crank up the fan while running very hot sometimes.

I haven't calibrated my display...

No1451,
Congrats on your buy!.. and good that you have no issues.

Just wanted to know how do you feel the display is? Specifically, the blackness of the blacks?

If you think its alright, which panel do you have?

Thanks

I haven't done anything to my display's set up. The blacks are black as pitch. I've read comments on "washed out" displays, but mine is awesome. It makes my previous Blackbook look washed out! The colors are rich and crisp. My display is the 9C8C model.

By the way... what does that mean? Is the 9C8C a good thing?

Ordered my MacBook 2.4 yesterday at Apple.com (up to 12% student discount). Now I'll have to wait till november 11th. I do hope it was the right decision. Spending so much money on a notebook isn't as easy as I thought. :p

Don't let all the carping bother you, it remains the best notebook computer ever released by Apple, bar none, including those pricey MBPs. ;)

I got my new macbook today, and I love it.
I was pretty nervous about having one of the minor (or major) flaws that I have read so much about, but nope! No crooked keys, no dead pixels, (knock on wood) no loose battery cover, and no dust behind the glass.
I am really happy. I love this keyboard.

My wrists have to get used to having a laptop again. After an hour or so my right wrist and hand ached like crazy... And advil or two and a few hours later, it isn't bothering me as much.

So far, I'm a satisfied customer.

I always use mine on Rain Designs iLap http://www.raindesigninc.com/ilap.html when I am working at home. Works great either on the desk or if I'm just sitting on the couch or in bed.

So I got my MacBook 2.4 /w 4 GB of RAM... it is beautiful. No problems with it at all! Are there any special things I should be doing? Do I need to let the battery die or anything like that? Any must have programs? Fill me in!

pstube's color settings make the display much nicer looking btw

My 2.0 glassbook stays significantly cooler and quieter than my last gen blackbook, late-2007 MBP, and my 1st gen MacBook. (I do a lot of virtualization with virtualbox)

As others have mentioned, I DO notice the hdd parking its heads a lot.
