I don't think it's neurotic to expect something you buy to be in perfect, unblemished condition.

Ugh, it's a computer, not a diamond ring. Have you seen your computers after 2 years of daily use? They all look like ****. And the last thing you would care about is some little chip on the edge, when after two years it's all scratched up, the keys are peeling, the palm rests are pitting and yellowing, and the entire case is starting to warp from the heat.

I think some Apple users are way too anal. All this exchanging on trivial issues is increasing prices for everyone else. The value of a computer is in how productive it allows you to be in X amount of years of the computer's life. Continuously exchanging/returning and stressing about some minor thing makes you LESS productive and unnecessarily stressed out. Think about the hours the Lystandler spent calling and taking photos. If he were using that time to study the SAT/GRE/LSAT/MCAT/GMAT, writing his grant proposal, finishing his quarterly report, or spending it with his SO and family, how much opportunity cost could he have saved?

Again, the sole purpose of the computer is to make you more productive. If it's not achieving that end because you are not allowing it to, you are losing sight of the ball.

I disagree - Apple has positioned themselves at the top end of the notebook market, as well as putting a lot of emphasis on design and aesthetics, and from my point of view, it should be worth my money, and look good.

I agree and a MacBook after 2 years looks 1000x better than a pc notebook after 2 years

Um not the plastic Macbooks. My gf's Macbook is all cracked up near the front palm rest. A two year old Thinkpad looks exactly as ugly as when it was purchased, but it still looks pretty darn new compared to a two year old Blackbook. There's a huge difference between a budget PC notebook and a business class PC notebook.

It's still a computer with a finite lifespan. And a day you aren't using that computer because it's at the Apple shop due to some minor cosmetic issue, is a day you are losing value on that computer. You don't really get any better dealer or warranty service from buying a BMW over a Honda. In fact, chances are the BMW will break down more often than your Honda and you will pay more to fix it (I've owned both and my Accord was by far the more reliable car, though I wouldn't say better). I don't see why you think Macs should be any different.

I don't see why you think Macs should be any different.

In the past 4 years, I have owned three laptops - a Packard Bell, a Toshiba, and a Sony Vaio. The Packard Bell blew up, literally and quite spectacularly one night, completely destroying the charger and frying the insides. The Toshiba, which was a step up in terms of quality, suffered a power surge through the USB ports, and they short-circuited. Unfortunately it was a problem that could not be resolved, as they were soldered in, and I had to use a PCMIA adapter. At any rate, it didn't last much longer after that - the hard drive broke. Finally, I have now owned my Sony Vaio for two years this month. There was definitely a premium paid for getting a 'name-brand' PC, however it has certainly looked the best and fared the best of all my laptops (N.B. it has effectively been on and been used for 2 solid years). However, I am replacing it because of certain quality problems (screen is coming off etc).

I am paying a premium to buy an Apple laptop, even with my student discount, and so I want a product that is worth the money. I will care for it enough that it will still look good after a couple of years, so I want one that works well, and looks good.

Either way, I feel that it is each to his (or her) own. I will replace mine if it is cosmetically damaged when it arrives next week, but I accept that you might not want to.

we'll I've had mine for a few hours now. The screen is not that bad, just not a color rich as the 1330 is and the fonts are more blurry and not as sharp although the keyboard is much better than the 1330. The trackpad is relatively cool and i like the gestures. My f2 - f7 keys are slanted though. It's nice to be back on osx though which I prefer for music, chat, ect as compared to windows but i'll probably boot windows on it anyways. So far so good though.

The blurriness is due to Apple's poor anti-aliasing. For some odd reason, Microsoft has done a much better job with fonts and font rendering than Apple, which used to own that aspect of computing.

Sorry about the slanted keys, but I'm sure you'll still enjoy the computer. :)

All right, I'll admit I may be slightly neurotic; however...

I'm not less productive because I'm neat. In fact, I've read that neat people can be more productive because there is no time wasted when everything is in order. Additionally, being neat and careful makes you a good steward of your resources. I don't shrink wrap my cars, but I keep them good enough condition that on my last 2 trade-ins I was able to get the full Blue Book Value. The good trade-in value helped me get more car each time. So now, my husband doesn't whine if I won't let him eat in my car... I'm saving him money! Keeping your MBs in nice condition makes for more $$ if you Ebay it or a nicer gift if you pass it on to a family member.

Seriously, I'm just arguing the point for fun. I am a neat freak by nature so it's just automatic for me to be a bit more careful with my stuff, but I truly don't obsess over it. If I mess something up when it's still new, then it bugs me, but otherwise I really do get over it. I do grasp the concept that they are just things.

What is going on with Apple? Slanted keys, loose batteries, loud space bars; and now, dead pixels?! COME ON :apple: !!

You have to bare in mind that these technically are BRAND NEW products, and nothing comes out perfect the first time. Im sure they will get it sorted.

I love this thing more each day!

Just dropping by again to sing the praises of my little Book because I'm so thrilled with it. I had no idea connecting and using an external display was so easy. It's making doing actual work so much more enjoyable and now I also have bigger screen and matte-ness for watching TV, yay!

Since getting this thing on Monday - only Monday? Seems like we've been together forever! - I've been using Expose and Spaces a tonne (to the point where going back to PCs for work is going to be utterly miserable,) got myself some Scrivener action for writing my stuff, and discovered the fun of things like Front Row. I haven't dared play on iMovie or Garage Band because I can see myself opening them up and emerging three days later, glassy-eyed and unwashed.

I know I'm in a forum of Techno Joy, so my setup isn't exactly advanced in comparison to most, but this is the most geeked-out my space has ever been and I'm loving it :D

I totally understand. I've got Scrivner too and I need to set time aside to get started on a project. And then it will be me days later still in pajamas and with furry teeth!

Longtime lurker, first time poster here.
I took the plunge last week after a LOT of procrastination (3 years) and bought the entry level aluminum MacBook. What can i say............

It was worth the wait!! I absolutely love it. So far seem no issues, and my keys etc all look good.I am a first time Mac buyer and it has taken a wee bit of time to get used to it all. I was expecting a much harder transition though, coming from desktop PC to an Apple laptop. The OS is so easy to use and as a result the transition has been easy.

This forum has been a great help...and I am sure I will be hanging around a little more now I am a Mac addict!

Ha! I think I started an Apple war! Once again, I purchased a new computer, and I feel that I am entitled to one. Why should I settle for less? It is a maxed out MacBook Pro, with the 2.8 GHz processor, and a 128 GB SSD. Oh, and nishishei, I am freshman in high school. I don't have a significant other, I don't have the SAT/GRE/LSAT/MCAT/GMAT to study for. I am not applying for a grant, and I do not have a report due at the end of this fiscal quarter. Oh, and before you ask, I get good grades. I just want the mac I paid for. I admit that I might be a bit anal when it comes to my stuff, but is that so bad? At least my stuff is pristine and doesn't break. I was able to sell my PowerBook G4 on Craigslist a few days ago for $1,000 because I took care of it the way I did. I plan to do the same thing with my MacBook Pro someday. Just to prove my point, I will include a link to a website I started this summer. It is a technology blog, and so far, I have made over $600 in advertising alone since August of this year. You can see for yourself. The link is: www.mactipspodcast.com. How are you running your TV? Is it through a TV tuner? Which one do you use and how much did it cost?
That is a neat little set up, congrats. It may not be some sort of a technological breakthrough but it's something i would like to set up. It would more than meet my needs.
Have fun with your new toy! I am on day 15 and LOVING it more and more everyday!! :D

Exactly!

Thanks for proving the point I made earlier. You sound like a logical and frugal young person who knows how to manage his money. Does being sensible and frugal make you anal retentive? I think not.

After all my music and the vids I am ripping, I couldn't imagine life without at least 160GB... are files on the SSD's smaller?

The files are the same size, but can be accessed, read, and written faster than a conventional hard drive. The SSD is much more durable than a conventional hard drive, and makes it ideal for a portable. Another benefit includes a MUCH faster boot/shutdown time. Try a 15 second boot-up time. There are also rumors that it offers a better battery life, though I didn't notice it. For storage, I have a Mac Pro with 1.32 TB of storage space, for large files. Unfortunately it is broken, and I can't get it fixed until I get the new MacBook Pro. I don't want to be without a computer when I have to manage schoolwork, and a startup website. For more info on the Mac Pro (specks, etc.), search for "Is My Mac Pro a Lemon" and click on on the post by me. (Liystalander) I would highly recommend the 128 GB SSD, with an extra external drive for large files that you don't need regularly. :apple:

I've had my 2.4 MacBook for 5 days now and I can't get away from it. I came from a Windoze machine and I learn something new everyday about this thing. I have sure been giving it a work out with HandBrake! Overall I'm very impressed and happy with my purchase. :)

Hey Ubercool...

Did you find out why your MB was shutting down by itself?? I'm curious about it.
