Ahh! I've had my MacBook for a few weeks now, and I've noticed a few lit pixels on the monitor... theres more than a few actually. Will Apple let me trade my notebook in for a new one? What should i do!?

I'd be ringing somebody's bell!

That thing needs to last years not weeks... if it were me, I'd march back to where I got it and not leave until they put a new PERFECT MB in my hands. If you ordered it online then I would call customer care. You didn't buy some cheap E Machine at Wallmart for heaven's sake. Get it done!

Oh, and tell us about it, please. Thank you.

alright i have a question for you guys here...

my macbook has recently been having wireless connection problems...but the thing is, it shows that i have a perfect signal and reception, but once in a while ill have about a min of just nonresponisiveness...like its not even connected and causes my skype to drop calls and adium to drop and sign out and stuff...

just wondering if this is something to be worried about? because most of the time, its perfectly fine and really fast (using an N router)...so its either the router is crap, or my airport card isnt keeping a signal...

also, my sisters white macbooks never seems to have any problems...shes always watching youtube videos and stuff and she never mentions anything about a loss of signal...

so if you guys have any thoughts, tthey will be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Mine was fine until I added TimeCapsule and I found out that the wireless feature on my Cable Modem was interferring. I thought that I was connecting to the internet through my network on TimeCapsule when in reality it was connecting through the much weaker cable modem by default. I went into the Network settings and made sure the correct network was the priority and deleted the others. Now when I open my MB it goes right to the correct router.

So all that said, it could be your router. I love the airport extreme and TimeCapsule. They do work a lot better than those old lynksis routers.

Backlit keyboard - how to get it to light?

How do I get the backlight on keyboard to light? When I turn off the lights, the screen dims but the keys remain dark - what am I doing wrong?

BTW, finally joined this forum, great place to learn about a great computer.

Hey, you seem to be the goto person about reliability. How would i go about dead pixels and such if iBought from MacMall return wise? Will the Retail Apple Store still help or will I have to call in with my problems? I just am a bit scared about buying from them. Thanks!

mac mall is very reliable and well-respected. you can contact them about an exchange or applecare. either one. If it were me i'd see what mac mall could do for me first. if no luck there, then contact apple. no worries.

Really? My friend bought a Macbook Pro and it came with a bad trackpad and they wouldn't exchange it. They said he would have to call Apple. I went to their site and they said no exchanges under their agreements about Macs. Personally I wouldn't buy from them, but I know several who have had good luck with them.

I've only bought from Apple, either in one of the stores or online so I have no experience there. But with every new purchase you have phone in support for 30 days I believe, unless you buy AppleCare, then it's unlimited phone support for 3 years. So if dead pixels showed up I'd call Apple Support and tell them to arrange a return for a new one. If you are wondering about dead pixels showing up months later, than maybe you should buy AppleCare. I'm sure MacMall posts their return/repair/issue policy on their web site. See what they say about enforcing Apple's warranty should a problem arise.

I don't know about me being a "goto" anything on reliability. I've just had great experiences with all of my purchases. My only possible near miss is a Macbook Pro bought refurbished about 1 1/2 years ago. It does have AppleCare and if my recurring issue happens one more time, we were told it would be replaced with a new laptop. So, I really have no complaints.

I have seen that the strong forceful people get the company to bend a lot more than less aggressive customers and that everyone I have dealt with really wants to please their customer.

Are you just preparing to make a purchase or are you already having a problem?

OK, so I ended up getting a bee-atch Apple Genius today who told me that my battery was fine and that 1.5 hours of battery life is "typical." I wanted to fling my MacBook at her but I decided to just leave and figure out a different strategy. This one definitely didn't work. Unbef...inglievable.

So, speaking of 'customer service'... what was the outcome with your battery... inquiring minds want to know.

macladybug do you use both he airport extreme and the airport in the timecapsule? Which one would you say works better?

my brother bought an imac there a year ago. it was damaged during shipping and they replaced it. different situation, but they were cool about it. And I bought my mom an ipod from them. So, i guess your mileage will vary.

I just replaced the Airport Extreme with TimeCapsule 2 weeks ago. Extreme worked smoothly without a hitch. I had to call Apple Support for some tweaking to get TimeCapsule configured, only because my Verizon Fios cable modem also has wireless capabilities and it was interferring with the set up. They had to transfer me to a more experienced tech, but it didn't take but a few extra minutes to get it working. It's worked flawlessly and now I don't have to manually initiate any backups on my 3 Macs. To answer your question... both. It's a matter of what you can afford or if you need the back up feature.

With both you can plug a printer in and then use it wirelessly. I already have a wireless printer and it too was easy to set up on either network. I have no problems with any of my Macs finding it.

You'll be happy with which ever one you get. Now that I have a left over Airport extreme I was thinking of putting it at the other end of my house to extend my signal. Don't need to. I have a strong signal all over my property, even on my patio.

So I finally got number 5 in. Apple care replaced mine for me because of some issues and it seems like I have the same Toshiba HDD like the previous one, and I can still hear it humming and chirping (every once in a while). DOES ANYBODY ELSE HAVE THE TOSHIBA HDD AND NOTICING THE SAME OCCURRENCE?!?!?
I'm gonna just live with that, because I don't want to mess around anymore. I've got the 9C8C screen and it is just fine. A couple of keys are slanted slightly, but not causing any issues.
I have noticed that the new Super Drive makes less noise(startup/initialize) than the previous one. This one is the HL-DT-ST DVDRW GS21N.
I am a little bit disappointed that I don't have that "PERFECT" feeling like i've heard many others, but that doesn't change the fact this is the best laptop i've ever owned (and i've had quite a few). Love the battery life, the simplicity of Leopard, and just the overall feel of this machine.

If the HDD noise is what I think it is, they all make it to some degree. Apparently it's something to do with Leopard parking the heads.

My HDD is TOSHIBA MK3253GSX and I have the 9C8C display. I'm sorry but I don't hear anything from my hard drive. If I put my ear on the keyboard I can hear it running, but I literally have to put my head down to it. I'd be so upset if keys were uneven and noise was coming out of the drive. It just seems unacceptable that anyone would have to go through 5 or more units to get a good one. Does Steve need to go to the factory and shake things up a bit!!! Dang. If I were someone who had never had a MAC this stuff may make me not switch. I bet Steve's Mac doesn't chirp!

I can't say that mine makes any "noise"... but I can tell that it is running, but I just can't hear much of anything. The same applies to the last 2 Mac laptops I had which are all in use by other family members.

Yeah, I can definitely hear it RUNNING in a quiet room, but the chirps I have to be close to hear. Maybe I just have AMAZING HEARING!! lol ....
I'm going to live with it because I'm tired of this mess by now.
Still, no doubt this is an amazing laptop.

Document your issues now...

One thing I've learned is that Apple Support keeps a running tally of the calls you make on your products. Call and explain the "5 laptop" thing. Whine about the noise and get a case number. At some point if things get worse then you have it documented that it's been going on since you got it and they will be more likely to fix it for free or change it out again if necessary.
