Got my new MacBook on Friday after all the pissing around Apple gave me!
Am safe to say that this MacBook has no problems with it at all! Also, found that the keys on the faulty one were slanty too =/

Am really impressed now I'm not pissed off anymore =]

I bought my MacBook on Friday. After using almost exclusively the whole weekend (except for gaming), I have to say I am very impressed with it. This is my very first Mac, after years of umming and ahhing about getting one. I didn't take the big plunge and get a MBP, instead, I got the base Aluminium MacBook... and I have to say, I am very pleased with it.

I went back to using my Windows Notebook this morning, and accidentally went to use the multitouch geture to scroll ( the 2 fingered one )....

What would you guys recommend? Parrallels, or VMware Fusions? I was thinking about heading down the BootCamp direction. I still need some windows apps for work purposes (I do alot of ASP, not ASP.net, coding).

That should be fine as far as connecting it goes, but I'm not sure how it will deal with the extra heat.

I thought the MacBook was limited to 9.5mm in height for the HDD. Isn't this one 15mm? And aside from the heat, would the MB have enough power to power this?

BTW, that battery that gave me problems, reared its ugly head again yesterday. Suddenly, while I was using it on an American flight with the airplane power adapter plugged in and showing 95% charged, it just shut down!

I could not revive it, but after I got it home, I could get it to restart again. Kept showing 10:00 hours to recharge the battery with no charging going on. After another restart, it began charging again and the battery power was down to 0%. At least it picked the right time to suddenly shut down: in the last 30 minutes of a 34-hour long trip over four planes. :p

So, even while plugged in to the AA plane's DC outlet, which BTW *do not recharge* your battery but mainly keep it maintenance charged at the orginal level, the battery was drained to zero. Another sign of a defective battery, of course. Will call AppleCare this week.

Hmm, very interesting indeed. But is SSD faster than any HD? Cause hows that compared to a 10000 rpm HD ? Or a 13000 rpm one?

Could this be used in a Macbook http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=494&language=en ?

The SSD will always be faster than a drive that requires a read/write head to physically travel over a platter to access data. That means that booting times, for example, are dramatically shorter with SSD-equipped computers.

But, and it's a big but, writing times are not that dramatically faster, so in a dollar vs. performance assessment, HDs beat SSDs hands-down. I have owned four SSD laptops, including three Sony TZs and a MacBook Air, and all finally became a huge money loser* because they were simply too capacity-constrained. YMMV.

* I had to sell all of them at a huge loss because the second-hand market does not understand why a 64GB "hard disk" notebook should cost $2200.

Well, Ubercool, it's perfect no longer

Out of the blue, all of a sudden, and without any warning, my super drive started sticking. If I tried to put a disk in, it would feel like it was hitting something. I could still push it in by wiggling it in and pushing from back to front. It would work, but when it ejected you could hear how tight it was and it would scratch the top of the disk. The first time, gooey stuff came out on the top of the disk. Now it just scratches it.

Went right to the Genius Bar last night. They said that they were told to "capture and replace all defective Alums and not repair them". Apple wants to see why they failed. Since mine is custom, I would have to wait for a replacement. Not wanting to give up my near perfect one for slanted keys, or a bad display I fussed a little. The Genius went back to check on updates to their directives and came back and said that since it wasn't display, keys, or a common problem issue, they would repair it. They will replace the drive with another one just like it on Thursday for me. (They would have done it right then, but no one was working repairs the day after Thanksgiving.)

Damn, my "PERFECT" little Alum has a teeny tiny flaw. Oh well, there it is.

I have had the new macbook 2.4ghs since it first came out. I just installed a 32 bit windows xp sp 3 and i am having some trouble.

First is it runs very laggy. A simple task of moving the windows gets very laggy, clicking my mouse causes the mouse cursor to be laggy too. Is it because my macbook is too hot right now or defaulty parts?

I read instructions in using bootcamp and I know I did it right so not too sure.

Also using bootcamp does the windows OS always starts up first, if so can you change it?

EDIT: Nevermind i think i know the reason why

I think I was able to FEEL the disappointment in your heart when I read your post :)
THANKFULLY, they worked with you and you didn't have to play russian roulette by ordering a replacement MB .. lol.

It should not be laggy at all. In fact, it works as fast as a regular Windows computer for me. While I use VMware Fusion, I know from reading reviews that even Bootcamp works very fast. I suggest removing the Bootcamp install and doing it all over.

So sorry to hear that. I don't think they'll swap mine either, all I need is a new batt! Hope you can wait until Thursday. While I have a spare IceBook, I would still be very bummed to give up my unibody to a nobody! :D

I just want to comment on something. I really miss the Del, Home and End buttons. Seing as I am a journalist, these keys help me write much more effeciently.

I would rather want those instead of the F1-12 buttons, which I never have used in my 15 years of computing. Cause I understand Apple try to simplify everything, which is good(!), but I dont like the fact that these three keys are missing.

Yeah they always upgrade and change/remove keys.

I was right there with you... until i found out about Cmd+left/right/up/down pretty much does the trick for me :D

So I was finally able to compare my MB with another one in the 'wild'. The other one was a 2.0 and had slanted keys but the owner didn't really care

One thing that I noticed was that his HDD was making a SIGNIFICANTLY quieter humm than mine... His was a 160GB Fujitsu, and mine is a 250GB Toshiba... I thought it was pretty interesting.

On a side note, the dude had bought his MB 4 days ago, and that thing was NASTY with prints on the screen and grease spots on the outer casing... I felt bad for that machine and wanted to pull out my wipes and clean it up a little bit!! ;) But i resisted the temptation!! :D

hey did you happen to do a boot test?

if so how fast was the 2.4 vs the 2.0

Hehe, you know your an anal MacBook addict when you carry around HandyWipes to clean other people's computers! :p :D

Hi, You can "Delete" its the cmd+Back Key

You say so huh.... hmmmmmmmmmm. Will have to give it a try. I assume you mean home and end functions? If I get used to it, then thats good. But still, two buttons for these functions.... well I'll just have to try it out.

Same for this

I've seen the CMD-key on the keyboard, never quite understood what its for :p I guess I will have to start using it.

I have to say though, that the keyboard on the MacBook is darn good to write on. I'm not just talking the material of the keys here, but the ergonomical design behind it all. The proportions, size and placements of the keys on the keyboard. Many people take that for granted and believes various keyboards are exactly the same, but this is infact the high art of making a good keyboard. Creating it in such a way that writing is fluid and produces the fewest errors as possible.

I love the mac Keyboards, the best I have ever used, I have a mate with a Sony, the keyboard looks much like the Mac's until you try it, but it is nothing like it, when you start to type

So my new macbook 2.0GHz came on Monday,
and I haven't taken it out of the box yet.
I have promised myself that I will not open it until Christmas.
 I'm nearly DYING with suspense, just knowing that it's just in the other room...

I would just like to say that i am extremely jealous of all of you and absolutely despise you all =]
I already have a fantastic MacBook. but the new ones are actually orgasm prone.
:D

You shoukd open it, to be sure if you have any defects so you can still return it to get a remplacement during the 15 days return period.

Sorry no boot test (i have some documents open that i'm working on and have not shut down my MB in a week :D) but my guess would be that since i have a bigger HDD and bigger processor it would make a little bit of difference....
