Has anyone here done the firmware upgrade? I wonder if it fixes a problem I have been experiencing more of late: my MacBook wakes up while sleeping and then ends up overheating and shutting down in its sleeve. :(

I love my new MBP too. Though this isn't my first Mac. My first one was back sometime in the late 80s. Forget what system it had on it or the model, but it had an old version or MS Word on it, older than 6.0. This was before I even saw a Windows PC. So after using PCs more in high school then watching Pirates of Silicone Valley, I remembered how similar that old Apple interface was to Windows. Just made me shake me head.

You most definitely want the update. The sleep issue you are experiencing is specifically addressed in this update. I have done the updates, but never had an issue with sleep...

Well, I just updated. At first the battery read over five hours, which I have never seen before, but it has already settled down to 2:20 minutes, which is more like what I experienced in the past, so no fix for this battery. Will see if the sleep problem is fixed.

Oh man! They haven't replaced the crappy battery for you?!? That sucks...

Did you try calling Apple Care after you went in the store?

The duration of your battery all depend of the apps you're running, wifi, bluetooth, screen brightness, devices plugged it, etc. So claiming time without saying what you're doing during this time is pretty much irrevelent.

LOL... Relax, this is an older issue. Had you been on this particular thread for as long as we have (since the beginning) you would have known what ubercool is talking about.. We've already covered this earlier on in the thread, and IT IS a faulty battery...

I love my Aluminum got it a few days after it came out and has allowed me to take my work from my iMac with a great battery life. Yes battery life depends on the applications or the type of work you are doing. Kind of like a vehicle if you drive it hard MPG goes down the drain if you drive slow you will get more MPG just like any laptop.

Question about the firmware update...

Are you talking about an update that isn't automatically delivered to your laptop with the other automatic updates? Is this one that we all need?

Mine works fine from the start and the update didn't even cause any problems. Try calling Apple for help?

No, I haven't had a chance yet, been traveling too much since before Thanksgiving. But now I'm settled at home, ready to do battle. :D

That's doing nothing, at default seven segments when power is unplugged with Wi-Fi on and BT off. Does that help? :)

Correct, you should select Software Update from the Apple menu and it will show that there's an "EFI" update for your MacBook. It will shutdown, make the sleep light blink like crazy and then emit a loud beep before shutting down. Then it will do nothing, so leave it alone and your MacBook will restart again, with gray start-up screen, and that is it. :)

After this, go to the updates again, because there is also an SMC update, and it won't show up until after you have installed the EFI update... Be prepared... it will make a couple of loud beeps and the fans will blow at max capacity during the second update...

Fan or Hard Drive noise?

Obviously, I'm a newbie and apart from this being my first MAC, this is perhaps the first major purchase of my life...I was using ichat (video chat), yahoo messenger, and browsing the internet at the same time (Mac book was in my bed) and I heard that loud noise - - was it from the fan or hard drive, I could not tell. Similar to the noise you hear when starting up...Is this normal?! I just want to double check as I'm very worried - - My Macbook was connected to the power adapter then....Otherwise, my baby's pretty silent

is this normal???

I'm loving my Macbook so far (2nd day of bliss...lol) - -and I'm thinking of upgrading to 4gb ram in a few months :)

You heard the restart chime while you were using the Mac and it didn't restart? That's quite unusual. If it was more like a fan, then we're talking something completely different. Anyway, I wouldn't worry, I can't fathom what it would be.

I recommend downloading iStat Pro on your machine. Next time you hear it making that noise, open Dashboard after installing iStat Pro and look at your fan's rpms. The Alu MB idles at around 2000 (which is fairly silent) and can get much higher if the cpu's working hard (considerably louder). If it was a loud, consistent whirring/whooshing sound, then it was the fan. My bet is that's what it was and it's normal when the cpu gets hot.

I agree! good advice, it seemed to happen when you were giving it some work to do, so it would have been working harder, thus running at a higher temp the other thing that came to mind was! you said it was on your bed, well! were the AIR VENTS covered, even by a small amount.
Hope you enjoying it anyway
Chris;)

*phew* Thank you so much for your replies. It was a whooshing/whisshing sound, and yeah, my guess it was the fan working harder. I did download istat so I can check it every so often. So far, I'm enjoying the MACbook - - so much more seamless and user-friendly compared to XP! I am still trying to accustom my hands to the trackpad gestures so I could maximize it.

I guess I'll be hanging around this forum for awhile...
