*phew* Thank you so much for your replies. It was a whooshing/whisshing sound, and yeah, my guess it was the fan working harder. I did download istat so I can check it every so often. So far, I'm enjoying the MACbook - - so much more seamless and user-friendly compared to XP! I am still trying to accustom my hands to the trackpad gestures so I could maximize it.

I guess I'll be hanging around this forum for awhile...
Your very welcome.
Enjoy

The best gestures are:

1. Two fingers to scroll current window up and down
2. Four fingers up and down to display desktop, Expose
3. Four across to switch apps.

Enjoy your MacBook. Also, I upgraded to 4GB without any of the problems others are experiencing. If you want to see how I did it, see the first post in this thread.

LOL... I was setting up a brand new HP laptop for my aunt, and after a couple of hours of messsing with it, my THUMB was starting to hurt like crazy from the click/right click, and I realized once again how much i LOVE 2-finger right tap, 4-finger Expose/Desktop, the HUUUUGE trackpad and so on... :)
I love this thing!!!

Well guess what? Finally called AppleCare today and they won't do anything either. They said that the battery was "within tolerances" and that because my cycle count of 136 is high they say I have basically worn out my battery. :(

OK, Apple sux is all I can say right now.:mad:

You've used 136 cycles in 2 months? What have you done? I've used 38 and I used it a lot unplugged.

I know it won't solve your problem, but I believe 129$ for a new battery isn't that bad.

I always plug it in when I'm using it at home, so I guess everytime I re-plug it in it counts as new cycle. I may have to bite the bullet on a new battery, but that still sux. Always thought Apple had better service than the rest, but I now I know that's not so.

OH man that sucks... They did you dirty on that one! You are entitled to a new battery... :(

P.S. How in the heck do you exhaust a battery after 130 cycles??!? I thought they were guaranteed for over 200...

You have to go back and have another go at them. I have a white MacBook close to 3 years old its done 233 cycles and the battery is as good as new

Something ain't right if yours is 3 years old and has only done about 60 cycles more.

That doesn't mean anything.. the cycles are determined by how much the user works on battery power rather than plugged in.

Damn. I seem to have acquired two light scratches on the base. Who knows when they got there

Otherwise all is fine. I notice some lag now that my HD has been filled with 200GB of videos and music but I am assured that Macs do not need defragmenting

Same here.. it seems like start up takes a tad bit longer, and apps take a few seconds longer to load, but it's still fast and working like a champ

My almost-2-year-old battery in MacBook has 191 cycles and still lasts for 3.5 hours with BT/Airport on and screen to almost full brightness.

A quick question.. where is the option for television gamma in display preferences? I don't see anything about television gamma in system prefs?

AppleCare anyone?

Just curious, have all you new Alum owners bought AppleCare for your new MBs?? I think I am going to, although I haven't gotten it yet.

I definitely want it, but I think I'm going to wait until the summer or fall.
And I think i'm going to buy it from Ebay.

I got Applecare with the money I saved with my student discount. It's nice just to know you have it there if anything goes terribly wrong with your macbook.

Battery saga update: I bought a second battery at London's Apple Store on Regent Street over the weekend for £97 (about $145). My first battery has recovered its ability to retain a charge and now clocks just over three hours regularly, with brightness dialed down three segments from max and BT off/Wi-Fi on, using it mainly for browing, e-mail, Skype and news reading.

Interestingly, the new battery, which has not been calibrated of course, shows the same time left as my first battery, about 2:12-2:20 minutes after a full charge using identical params as above.

So I guess that in hindsight Apple was right to refuse to replace my battery. It seems that the MB battery has memory problems, so my frequent partial charges left it incapable of discharging at its peak rate. I now let it run down to 0 minutes all the time and that has helped a lot.

It also throws into question all those reports of "five-hour" batteries, which seems so far removed from reality, based on my experience with two batteries now.

Very interesting ... So it's your particular machine not the battery?!? Can you return your new battery or are you keeping it?
I can tell you for a fact that mine could get 5 hours + with just regular, light stuff. I haven't used it so far, but it looks better than yours... Right now I have 73% and 2:25 Hours with : Adium, iTunes, Bowtie, Safari (5 tabs), Jing, Entourage, Wireless on, Bluetooth Off, Maximum Screen Brightness and keyboard on half way...

I can regularly get 5+ hours, sometimes more. The key for me was that I had to get rid of all of the sync server processes. They were eating around an hour or so.

For my 5+ hrs I go to "plane mode":
- Low/lowest screen
- "productivity apps"
- all radios off
- I disable Time Machine (haven't figured out if this does anything form me yet)

I'm going to keep it. I checked SeatGuru to see if my seats had power adapters and they were supposed to, but good ol' United did not have them at either seat, which can be quite a bummer on an 11-hour flight. At least this way, I have about seven hours available if I crank everything down, which is plenty of time to play Spider Solitaire non-stop. :p :D
