Hey, not sure if this goes here, but didn't think it warranted a new thread. How do you get rid of the Firefox icon that is on the main screen? Not the icon at the bottom, but the shortcut icon. My hubby said he put it in the Trash, but then he had to reinstall Firefox over again. Sorry, total Mac n00b.

If you trash it and it does not work, that mean that this is not a shortcut, but the actual apps. Apps in Mac are generally all under one files, finishing with .app. If it's called Firefox.app, then that's your browser. Drop it in your apps folder and you should be done. I do think however that you will need to refresh your dock, since Firefox will be at another place.

Hah! That made me laugh for some reason, probably because most of the time I hear the opposite - guys handing off their old POS machines to their wives/girlfriends.
Nah, it's the same in my house, hubby normally get's my cast-offs. However, this time he is getting his own iphone and macbook when he comes back from the gulf. He's fed up with his ancient POS Acer and his winmo phone and is really impressed by my gadgets. Means I get to tease him for a couple more months about how good this is, lol.
:D

That's funny, I kinda thought the same thing while I was typing it (about hubbys getting the Mac and handing off the PC). Trying to get him to see the light, but he is resisting. Oh well, I will enjoy my iphone and UMB and leave him to his inferior devices.

Also, thanks for the help with my question. I appreciate it. Now the only thing I need is my foofbag! I spent so much time researching cases and bags, even thought I might do a hard case or a gelaskin on the back. Now that I have it, there is no way I could do that to my baby! Thanks again, all!

Argh - the icon is not going away! It lets me drop it into the Trash (as long as I don't have it open) but as soon as I open Firefox again, it appears! Also, there is a "Macintosh HD" icon right next to it (in the top right hand cover of the screen). Is that supposed to be there? I can't get either of them to go away. Should I reinstall FF? Thanks.

Well the Macintosh HD icon is standard on all macs so i wouldnt worry about that.

The firefox issue sounds like firefox is launching from the original image as opposed to the applications folder. If you uninstall FF and then re-download the dmg, the installer window pops up...dont click FF here but insted drag the logo to the applications folder. Once this is done eject the firefox logo from the desktop. Then go to the applications folder and click firefox...this should install it and it should work fine then without an icon on the desktop.

Hope this helps,

Bryan

New Macbook 2.4........waiting.....

Last week I ordered a refurbished Macbook 2.4, upgraded from my Powerbook G4 12" 1.0 Ghz that I have used right down to the bone for the past five years, it has been a great machine and still is! (the disc drive is now bogus and the battery lasts only four min:(

I have been reading these threads and scoping out the apple site everyday for the past five years dreaming of getting a new computer... I have read on numerous posts of individuals upgrading their previous one to two year old Mac to a new one all the while thinking, "I would love to have your old one, man, I would love to have your old one!! Why oh why do you need to upgrade!?" Of course people have their reasons (most don't for what they are using it for, they just need the next best new toy), although it has been all to painful to bear.

I am here now with the Macbook 2.4 on the way (from Canada to Japan, superb exchange rate :) and it has been a long time in the waiting. I am moving down to Kyushu from Honshu and it will be shipped to my new location so I have to go meet up with it in over a week and I can't wait! I also oredered a 24" LED which has already arrived at my new location (from Yahoo Auction Japan) however I am not yet there to look at it. It would kill me anyhow being only able to look at it, so I am glad it is miles away.

For what it's worth, I had contemplated getting the high end Macbook Pro over my now purchased Macbook 2.4 and 24" LED but figured I can always use the display (hopefully assuming Apple has more than just a one year plan with it) with a new Macbook (or Pro) down the road and still have a dandy display for years to come. Anyone have any thoughts on whether this is a good plan or not?

For instance in one (two) years time (or thereabouts) the now Macbook Pro won't be as good as the new Macbook, specs wise will it!? Of course it won't, that is why everyone on this thread doesn't waste their money on a Macbook Pro (Just to trade it in a year or two for the next best beast). You can buy another Macbook in a year or two bringing the grand total of the two to that of the now, new high-end Macbook Pro!? I know money grows on trees for some and others need it for certain design/video tasks (however only a slight few from reading the threads) and for performance however these people aren't rocket surgeons are they, why do they need a new computer every year for a few seconds in speed performance? Perhaps if they don't they need to work through their coffee breaks to keep up the loss of performance, I don't know? Gamers out there well yeah, there might be a valid argument.

Anyway, having the now high end display should keep me covered for quite a few more years and many Macbooks I hope???

A Mac is built to last for years, it is obvious by the quality of the build and it's capabilities isn't it?? Maybe not for as long as I have waited but people need to remember that. Hence the high resale value not to far down the beaten trail if one chooses to trade their love in for a new one which maybe answers my question on why people get new computers year after year...

Alright time for bed, that was too long winded, just talked myself into a full circle...too much sake...sumimasen.

Peace Macsters:apple:

Upgraded to 4Gb RAM

Finally, upgraded to 4Gb Ram - it's been two weeks. Installed Photoshop, Bridge and lot more programs.

Upgraded the RAM myself - the battery cover went back in place tightly - no gaps or clicks - beauty!!!

Cheers,

Where did you get your RAM from? I'm looking at getting 4GB in a couple of weeks myself.

Congrats on your purchase. Let us know how you like it when it comes. I had a bit of trouble with my first refurbished (incidently it was a MBP), since then I've stuck with new ones... so I'll be interested in how your refurb works for you. As far as the alum model goes... you are going to love it.

Just picked mine up yesterday. 2.4/4gb ram. Couldnt be more stoked. Fastest thing ever!

I've been a Hack user for a long time. I'll probably always build my own desktops because (1) I like to, and (2) I can get better performance/$. That being said, my wife and I bought our first legit Apple computer this week, a 2.0GHz UMB. :D

It's actually just hers. She loves it. But I'm falling in love with it to. It's just so dang easy to move around. It's nice and compact. It wakes from sleep so responsively and ready to go. So, I think I'll be picking up another one today to replace my ancient Gateway laptop. I'm in school right now and I hate lugging that giant brick around. Not only that, but the battery holds a charge for like 1 hour now. Neither of us needs a lot of computing power in a mobile computer. Specifically, I just need to be able to write papers and do research. My desktops are a different matter. I want and need something that can render, Photoshop, encode, video edit, and play games. I could just buy a non-Apple laptop and put OSX on it but it's difficult finding one with the same compactness and, let's face it, these things are really sexy.

So, settings aside our iPhones, we will have gone from zero Apple computers to two in the course of one week. :D

well, reporting in from melbourne, been following the forums for more than a year...and i was watching every single youtube video about the alubook when it launched, stayed up till 6am following the launch and i am glad to say i finally got the alubook 2.0 last month.

switching from a compaq, had a powerbook years ago, but the compatibility of office documents made me move away, it was also stolen btw.

the mac experience has been amazing indeed and this is one heck of a sexy machine ;)

Have you seen the 17" Alum yet?

I went to Best Buy yesterday and for the first time I checked out the 17" Unibody. Wow! First let me say that for me my Alum MB is perfect... I'm too small to carry around a 17" notebook. But man, at 6.6 pounds that thing was phenomenal. If I was a big guy, I'd have to consider it. It would be like having a big HD flat screen on your lap that had the weight of a feather. I couldn't believe how thin and light something that big could be. If you needed a lot of screen real estate and it needed to be portable, you couldn't go wrong.

I just put a Samsung Sata-II SSD drive in mine and it has sped up a TON.
Boot time is super fast. Its super quiet, a little bit lighter, it doesn't get as hot.
If you can spend the money, its totally worth it.

I love my MB.

Time to quit lurking! My 17" Powerbook G4 just recently suffered a logic board failure. Rather than replace it, I decided to buy a refurb MacBook 2.0 Ghz, 4 gig ram. It just arrived, and I have to say I am impressed. It's fast, sleek, and a lot of fun to use. The case is in immaculate condition, and the battery cover is solid. No slanted keys, strange electrical shocks, or other anomalies. With regards to the display issue, I have no problems with it. Yeah, if you watch video from extreme angles it looks a little washed; however, I don't care. I love it, it meets my needs, and I can't wait to use it at work tomorrow.

Ok, this caught my attention. How big is the drive and what did you pay? I might be interested in this...

thx

Tell us more! I am totally broke, but this is information I can file away for later. How much?

I've decided to purchase the inCase hardcase shell for my aluminum MB.
Does anybody know of any coupons or discounts? Also should i buy it from incase or apple? Any ideas?
Thanks.

This is the drive: http://cgi.ebay.com/SSD-64GB-SAMSUN...temQQimsxZ20090305?IMSfp=TL090305121008r24595

I didn't pay that of course but there some reviews on the web. I did some Xbench tests and they were a high number, I honestly don't know what the numbers mean. LOL Boot time is faster, Programs are faster to open.

I'm not sure what else to tell you. It definitely feels lighter and does not run as hot.
