Yes, I use iStat Pro. That's how I know it's running hot. But I'm not 100% sure it's the drive. I do use a lot of processing-intensive software, like Adobe InDesign and Illustrator, while also browsing on that heat-sink known as Firefox. :p

That's weird, I haven't noticed any increase in heat or drop in battery life after installing my 500GB. Is yours a 7200RPM drive? I got a WD Scorpio Blue 5400RPM 500GB and seriously couldn't be happier with it. No vibration, no noise, nothing.

I'm so glad that you said that, cause i just ordered mine!

I guess I should have added that the Hitachi 7K500 is a 7200rpm drive in my post above. Like I said, I don't think I can fault the drive, so will have to retract my words. ;)

Screen problem

Dear friends,
After a year and a half using alu macbook 2.0, the only problem that I encountered was the faulty (flickering) screen (had to be replaced), and the thing with the audio in jack (jack not staying in place) that you all know about.
Would like to see MBP 13" with audio in, and audio out (separate)
What do you think the time limit is for purchasing spare battery for our collectors edition?
Cheers

OMG! Apple REALLY crippled the new MacBook Pro 13s by not going Core i5. I was all set to jump on a new 13, but I'm not sure I want a gianormous 15 either. :(

I have an aluminium MacBook from 2008. It has, after upgrading it, 4GB of DDR3 RAM (2GB standard) and a 500GB 7200rpm hard drive (250GB 5400rpm standard). It's the then top model, so it has the illuminated keyboard and the 2,4GHz Core 2 Duo processor (both standard).

The new low-end MacBook Pro, from 2010, has the same specs. Sure, it has a faster GPU, FireWire 800 and an SD card slot, but besides those features it's still roughly the same machine. Two years later, still the same specs.

I'm perfectly happy.

Me too. Same situation, no reason to upgrade at this point.

The one area where the new MBP is supposed to excel over our MB is graphics. What I hear is that the 320M is much better than the 9400M.

Same model here almost right down to your specs; I have 320GB HDD @ 5400rpm (I wonder if yours runs hot under semi-demanding tasks. Just put Apple Care on mine so I've got until May 2012 or Apple doesn't to seriously bump the cpu specs along with even better 320M graphics.

ideally though the 320M and better battery life may just be enough for me - especially if CoreAudio can take advantage of OpenCL processing on the GPU somehow ... then Ableton Live 8/9, Logic Express/Logic Pro/Studio/GarageBand can perform that much better. I think I may upgrade during Xmas to the new 13" Pro.

Right now I just LOVE my uMB_Al ... its just so beautiful to hold, type, swipe the trackpad on ... its like the awe of discovering my very first Apple all over again ( Apple IIc). It was the schools but it was pure Bliss.

Well I decided to ditch my beloved MacBook Alu for a 15-inch 2.63 with a hi-res screen. Unfortunately, I had to return the one I got because it was suffering from a yellowish hue at the bottom of the screen.

But it was a great machine despite its bigger size. For one thing, it ran much cooler than this MacBook. And that high-res screen shows you so much more real estate, a big plus for my current book project.

Will miss this little 13-inch's form factor, but it's time to move onward and upward! :)

Ah well congrats on your new purchase. I loved my alu MacBook while i had it but i got one of the ones with the lower quality screens so i sold it last november. Still the best MacBook made IMO

What did you buy instead? And don't tell me a Dell. :p

Haha no i already had an iMac which has since died on me, i am now using my mates old laptop till i can decide what to buy. I was hoping the Air would be updated at same time as the Pro's but thats not happened.

You'll have to wait until July after Intel's announcement of the new ULV i5. I'm half suspecting that Steverino will update the MacBook Pro 13s then too, screwing everyone who bought the early 2010 version. :D

I think we have got quite some time, as they still have batteries listed for the iBook and PB G4, although I don't think they still produce those. They have batteries for the old blackbooks and white MBs as well, so I don't anticipate that they will discontinue the battery for the collectors edition anytime soon :)

Being one of the original Aluminum MacBook owners, I just wanted to say that this machine is by far the best piece of electronics I've ever used. No computer (other than another Mac) comes close to it's sexy style, ease of use and rock solid reliability.

Four gigs of RAM, a terabyte of storage while still retaining the DVD/CD drive, 2.4GHz of power, and Snow Leopard to bring it all together.... I couldn't ask for more.

         :)

I absolutely agree too.
For about 1.5 year now, I've got a late 2008 uMB, 2.0 ghz, 320 WD 7200rpm HD, and 4GB RAM

Small form factor, powerful, well build, Snow Leopard, what else could I wish (except for a blu-ray drive, better CPU and higher res screen (A) )

My next computer is definitly a mac

Haha, I had the original MBA and it was underpowered and lacked sufficient storage capacity. The new MBA, while better, continues this tradition. That said, I would love to have an 11-inch model, maxed out to spec. :D :p

Seems like a lot of members on this thread are selling up and getting the new MBA :)

I did - maxed 13" instead of my Alu 2.4GHz/4G. Basically been installing stuff for a day and I'll take it on the road for 10 days starting Monday. That will give me a good feel for it. I'll post along the way.

I've had my refurbished 2GHz Aluminum MacBook for a year now and I still enjoy using it. After about 6 months I tend to get bored with my computers and have the urge to sell them. I checked out the new MacBook Air the other day and it's a great machine, but I'm going to stick with my current MacBook until they install larger HD's and faster processors in the Air. I just re-installed Snow Leopard on the computer because it was starting to become a big laggy and it's amazing how much faster it is now... feels like a brand new machine.

I was exactly at this same place. The Alu MB was my first Mac that I used daily for work. This machine has traveled over 300,000 miles with me and been super reliable. I was really torn except for the weight. My new Air is 2/3rds of the weight which is important for me.

The new Air is great though I haven't traveled with it yet (Monday). I'm sure I'll be happier with the lower weight.

That's the one I would go for. The 11 i feel would be too small for me. The 13 would seem to be the sweet spot. However I'm not sure I will go back to owning a laptop again. I only have basic portable needs which my iPad covers. Might just get a mini instead :)
