Viccles would prove you wrong.

Im more impressed with the macbook, cuz thats what Ill be buying when I have the money. :)

I'd love to be proved wrong. I also vote for the Macbook, just because it is the perfect size for my needs. I find that 14 to 15 inch laptops are just too cumbersome for travel, which I do a lot of. And, it will probably be even faster than my 1.33 iBook... (duh)

Viccles IS a woman.

I think it is more likely that Steve Jobs is notorious for being extremely demanding and a perfectionist. He probably is therefore somewhat hard to get along with if you are not of the same mind... It is surprising that you think it "unfortunate" that he is a brilliant visionary.

I meant it was unfortunate in the sense that when someone is a brilliant visionary, you're forced to deal with their other less desirable quirks. And yes, he's demanding and perfectionist, but sometimes his vision isn't the best and we have to deal with it. That's all.

Perfectionists are, by definition, unreasonable. Rephrase it however you like, but dealing with them is a pain. That doesn't mean the finished product isn't worth it, but let's call a spade a spade.

Agreed. But they are sure fun to watch from a distance!

First - I am a pro user - meaning I make my living from the products produced with OS X and related software and Apple hardware - not a gamer.

The screen issue was of most importance to me and a few people posted good advice - go to the store and see it for yourself BEFORE commenting.

Our local Apple store had the older version matte, older version gloss, and new version gloss MBPs side by side.

The comparison was very compelling - the newer version gloss screens were even MORE reflective than the older version gloss screen - rendering them near useless for a normal office / conference room presentation. I tried many different viewing angles - results were bad, bad, and worse.

Here is the shocker - I tilted the screen near vertical to avoid most of the reflections and found the screen image competing - of all things - with the reflection of the black keyboard - what in the hell was Apple thinking?

I really do not care about all the internal machining precision - the screen image is CRITICAL to me and how my clients view my product. We have a number of older Apple notebooks and have had zero problems with "flex" or needing more rigidity or internal CNC precision - that stuff is a joke.

Steve Jobs had better ramp up his Reality Distortion Field generator to unheard of levels if he thinks pro users are going to buy the new Glare Screen.

Yes, please do! :)

I called (twice actually) and they both (Local store, and Apple's online sales) basically indicated that the Mini Display Port to full DVI adapter will work just fine with a full DVI to VGA Adapter (Apple Branded or not). This is great news as I have a DVI display at home, and a VGA display at my office desktop.

So I guess we are set!

Does anyone know if its possible to tighten the hinges on the new macbook pro?

I could not tell from the fixit tutorial.

My old MBP, i could pick it up and hold it vertically and the screen would not move. The new MBP, I lift it and the screen just falls down. The hinge is not tight enough.

Any help on this would be great. Is it something they could fix in the applestore at the genius bar?

Being a non-power user (graphics anyway) I can still see your point and frustration. It does seem odd that they would not at least make some option, free or not, for users such as yourself.

I stopped by the Apple Store today to check out these bad boys for myself. A couple of things:

1) The glossy screen is VERY glossy. Being an advertising creative, I'm a "pro user," but I'm also on the writing end of things. I can't see art directors being very happy at all with this. Even in the controlled lighting of the shop, there was glare galore.

2) The difference between the MB and MBP screens is profound. The black levels on the MB are just not up to snuff. That said, I don't know if improved black levels are important enough to the average user to justify the extra money for an MBP.

3) The fit and finish of these babies is unbelievably good.

4) The MB has decreased in weight by a half-pound. Somehow, even this small amount seems to cross some threshold that makes the MB a very viable alternative to the Air.

5) The new track pad is fantastic. There's no real learning curve. By the second click, you're practically an expert. The multi-gesture thing works very well.

6) The keyboard is just eh. They keys don't travel very far and there isn't a whole lot of clickiness.

Just some thoughts...

Went by the Apple store and took a look in person at the new MBP...
Really feels solid, should do a lot to eliminate the dings and dents that plague current MBP owners.

There was a previous generation MBP sitting next to it, and I must say that the new one suffers in comparison as far as looks. The new glass display was fine, but the black chiclet keyboard just looks cheap in comparison...

When the last generation came out, it took a little to get used to the metallic keyboard, looked a little gaudy at first. But now that I'm used to it, the new keyboard just looks pedestrian.
