MacBook and MacBook Pro Disassembly and Photos

I love looking through the insides of the computers. Built my own desktop, but am always amazed to see the inside of a laptop. And the design on these is pretty amazing as to how clean it is. :p

rigidity

I've always felt just a little nervous about picking up my Powerbook G4 in any other way than holding it with two hands by both sides - quite carefully ... I'm conscious of the fact that if I picked it up from one side, the casing might bend and goodness knows what might happen.

And that may not be just paranoia, as I fell victim to the infamous non-registering RAM glitch on this machine, which was the result of a bad logic board .. possibly due to handling?

In any case (no pun intended!) I can see that reliable rigidity coupled with thinness makes these machines more durable, and happier to use. It looks like good engineering design.

Shame about the black keys and the huge price for firewire.

What's the quality of the internal speakers of the new Macbooks and Macbook Pros? In my opinion the Powerbook 1GHz had the loudest built-in speakers compared to the much more quieter Macbook Pros that followed. Do the new Macbooks and Macbook Pros sound any louder and better?

If the reviews are to be believed, the MacBook's sounds 'very good' and 'not tinny at all'.

The MacBook Pro, on the other hand, is said (by most people) to have magnificent sound 'worthy of the HD quality being sold on iTunes'.

I say get the new MacBook, and screw the $700 for the Pro!

Well, if you've seen it, I believe you. None that I own have.

Perhaps I haven't bought a camera recently enough. (Although my latest HDV camera is from late 2007).

Hey speaking of not upgrading cameras, mine still uses floppies (3 1/2 disks). I use it though my USB LS 120 Drive connected to my Mac Mini!!!!!

Although I do have a video camera that uses firewire. Never ended up using it.

Amazing photos!

I wonder if anyone knows how much the optical drive alone weighs in the MB and MBP? That is, I wonder how much weight would be saved by removing it (since i never would use it).

Am I the only one that vastly prefers the feeling of the "chicklet" keys?

Also, can anyone else confirm that the black levels are much deeper in the Pros than the MB's

Thanks.

You seem to be in the minority, though the haters are generally more vocal. I went from a 12" G4 Powerbook to a 13.3" MacBook (which will be eclipsed by the new Pro whenever it arrives in the mail) and it took a little getting used to but I like the chicklet keyboard just fine. It's different than the old one, but I dunno that I'd claim either was better. I think most people—and not all of you, but most—simply like things as they are and are hostile to change purely on that note.

I like both, so no biggy. I think I'd have to give the older one an edge in liking the feel, but I much prefer the look of the chicklet keyboards.

hope you don't have a firewire external or DV camcorder you plan on using with it . . .

I personally have no use for FW, its a shame for others tho.

I was looking forward to trying out external Fw drives, but i guess i cant give it a go. I dont even use externals now however....

Just why do you dislike the black MacBook Air-keyboard so much?

personal preference.

I have a black macbook and don't mind the keyboard. Really I have no preference on keyboards, except I hate ones that I have to push hard on. However, I know for a fact that my typing speed is much lower on my Macbook than it is on a powerbook. Had I cared enough I'm sure I'd prefer the Powerbook style keyboard. Luckily the most typing I do is at maximum 15 page papers. For the most part I use my Macbook for photo/video editing.

Perfect Macbook

Here is the perfect macbook :D
There is no others

Being a non-power user (graphics anyway) I can still see your point and frustration. It does seem odd that they would not at least make some option, free or not, for users such as yourself.

This is a case where I would be willing to pay an additional $100 for a matte screen option - where to from here?

Maybe I'll get a nice surprise with a new 17" with e-sata ports and a matte screen. Bigger than I want but............

So the new MB and MBP are heavier than the previous generation.

The new MB and MBP have glass that could break much easily than the previous plastic.

The new MB and MBP have fewer usable ports with the omission of some much needed ports.

Sounds like Apple is pulling the cloak on peoples heads with they new design and case techniques at the cost of the above, with the introduction of higher cost. Brilliant.

It's not really proprietary. Displayport and Mini Display port are industry standards, it's just that it's so new so there's very little with these ports on them currently, which means you have to get adapters to connect to exisitng displays.

Mini DisplayPort is not an industry standard. So far, it's Apple's own port based on DisplayPort. Remains to be seen what happens with this port. Currently, Apple controls what you can do with it, and they don't even provide a Mini-DisplayPort to DisplayPort adapter.

Not sure if what you have stated is correct.
My understanding is that the new macbooks are lighter than the previous models.
The glass pad is used because it provides better tracking over plastic.
Who cares about ports, if you haven't switched to WI-FI your behind. Fewer ports encourages people to switch to WI-FI.

I hope you guys heard of WI-FI HUBs. Why bother hooking up anything to your macbook. Just access everything through WI-FI Hub.

So, I don't think you have an argument!

Well I wasn't addressing Streaming video capture from a DV tape camera or live camera capture. I was commenting about the HDD type cameras where you are simply transferring DV to the MB.

Yes the improved Graphics chip and the new hardware encoder/decoders will speed up your video editing software. Apple claims a big performance boost for ilife, FCE, and Aperture. When Snow Leopard comes out the difference will be even more dramatic because Snow Leopard will be able to off load graphics calculations to the GPU.

No, I wasn't talking about streaming, either. I waas talking about capture of recorded video. And the hardware encoder doesn't speed up editing or the editing software. It speeds up encoding and decoding of h264 and nothing else. Which is great if you're encoding to h264. That's a nice feature. But it does nothing else. The graphics card could produce a performance bump in FCE, but I'll never know because there's no Firewire to get the video into the computer! You need to do some research if you want to talk about the ins and outs of video.

And the only way to transfer video from a HDD or DVD camcorder is through proprietary software. You can't do it through FCE. But who's going to dumpt their $4000 prosumer camcorder for junky hdd or Dvd camcorder just so that they can use the MackBook. I will be forced to move to PC laptops to accomplish what I need to do.

Yeah i dont think i can connect my DV VTR to a WI-FI hub and preview the video on my NTSC monitor... kinda need firewire to do that. and I need it on a 13 inch MacBook so I can show my work to my clients in their offices. I have a Mac pro at home and at work both with 23 inch screens. I need portable not screen size. I'd be happy with a 11 inch screen if they had one. As long as it had firewire.

So... I think you lost your argument. If you know how to do what i need please show me the way...

I just went to the Apple Store on Fifth Ave here in the City.
I was very skeptic after looking on photographs and reading blogs.
My visit changed that. At least for MacBook.
It looks much better in real life and there is something in design that makes it appear very small and compact and light. Black keyboard and back hinge doesn't look bad at all.
The built is superb.
Sales guys on the floor know nothing.Don't even bother asking.
By the way, the backlit keyboard comes only on Macbook $1599 and Macbook pro. Not on $1299 model.
Apple online store finally fixed that too.
I think I will be buying one now after getting my hands on it.
