a 17" Laptop for $4,000 after tax and options is Apple's idea of "aggresive" pricing ? lol or a $2,500 Macbook that doesn't even have a firewire port ? lol Are these guys for real ?

I really hope that lowest price point is a tablet mac. I feel like it will be a very basic macbook aimed for students. I think we will more likely see a tablet at MacWorld.

My guesses on the new MacBook range:

$899 'NetBook (InternetBook, iBook? lol)' model
- Newly designed aluminium case
- 13.3 inch LCD 16:10 panel, LED backlight.
- 2.1Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
- 80 GB HD
- 1 GB RAM (Expandable to 4 GB)
- New Nvidia IGP (lite version) Improves battery life & about 2 x faster than current MacBooks
- HD/Dual Link DVI video output through new DisplayPort
- No FireWire ports
- 2 x USB 2.0 ports
- Combo Drive
- Ultra thin profile and very light
- 802.11 a/b/g/n Wifi
- Gigabit Ethernet
- Analogue audio input & output
- 5 hours battery life
- As seen in recent leaked photos

And a pony. You forgot the pony.

Apple will not introduce a new format for less. It is cheaper for them to make something removing expensive parts and charging less than making entirely different product and charging less.

I think MacWorld 80%. The other 20% would be 2009-2010 or even 2011.

Do you guys think they will completely stop selling them, or will they reduce the cost to get rid of stock? Maybe the basic white version will be the $899 model...

Bingo!

The $899 unit is the existing MB. Maybe gaining a Superdrive in exchange for isight. Very few bto options, prehaps with a even more intergrated logic board. It would not be unprecedented; Apple did this with the eMac and one of the G4 Towers; I forget which.

The higher value units get the new ali chassis.

I think you're close, but no cigar. I just can't seen a high-end MB topping out at 2.8 GHz. Let's leave that for the Pros. I think the two high-end models will top out at 2.5 GHz, while the low-end MB will be 2.4GHz.

The only problem is that there is no price point at $1049 and $1499.

In my opinion, the 899$ model is the one that's coming with the Intel Integrated Graphics, slower CPU, less RAM, smaller hard drive....but still that will only justify up to 300$ difference....but we would get student discount right?

With the student discount, they will be paying you to take the computer! :D That's what they meant by lower margins.

No 13" MBP. Bummer.
Looks like I'm gonna get
- M97, MB467LL/A $1,599.00 - MacBook, or
- M98, MB470LL/A $1,999.00 - 15" MacBook Pro, or
- M98, MB471LL/A $2,499.00 - 15" MacBook Pro.

I'm with you on the 13" MBP. That is a terrific bummer.

Do you think the difference between
- M97, MB466LL/A $1,299.00 - MacBook and
- M97, MB467LL/A $1,599.00 - MacBook is a FireWire port?

There will be way more difference than that. Likely other differences: maximum ram, spec'd (default) hard drive, GPU and CPU speeds, bus speeds, and the size/quantity of monitors it could drive (related to the GPU again, I would suppose).

Savin' my pennies!

Smart!

K is for Killer

Steve is fond of the "killer app" - maybe this will be the killer tablet.

Also apple could get rid of macbook as it is right now entirely. It could become just one family with different screen size 13-15-17. Gone "pro" word and everything is blended in, 13" will be entry model with K being cheapest version of such model and 15-17" will have similar specifications to current macbook pro models.

I can assure that you should forget about mini cd or dvd format if you own slot loading apple computer.

Yes I don't need the re-assurance on this point! Having dealt with several customers who did not read the manual before inserting some odd/small non standard disc and then demanding new computers!

why are you lamenting a 13.3 mbp when all the devices look the same and there is a good change that the 13.3 mb will have a card that is atleast capable of driving a cinema display.

K is for Kryptonite

Be the first to own a laptop not even Superman can dent - made of Kryptonite!

Comes with it's own battery powered Reality Distortion Field . . . .

I love this JR dude, whoever he is.

That's what I think they should do as well. However, there also needs to be a $1500 low-end model available. But Apple seems to thick the name Pro=more money.

"What it will be:

A really, really, stripped down macbook. No touch, no dvd burner. Just a very elegant "sub-notebook" style computer. It will weigh almost nothing, but contain a lot of features for its class. Competing products from Dell/Toshiba/Sony/Acer/whomever will cost $200-$250 less but will have fewer features and simply feel like toys in comparison."[/QUOTE]

These Macbooks are gonna make other computers look like toys ? They don't even have a firewire port. lol THe $2,000 Macbook might have a firewire port. $1000 for a firewire option. Sounds like a good deal to me.

I've not really been following the CPU possibilities at the moment (I know, I know, I've gone slack!) But what are the options right now?

MacBooks currently top out at 2.4Ghz and MacBook Pro's at 2.6Ghz. Do intel have better offerings now? What are the possibilities for quad-core?
