I've read through the two 1500+ threads and this one but seems like no one has mentioned this: What's Steve gonna do during the keynote? I mean so far we know for sure that there will be a new MB and MBP coming with some new prices. Assuming the keynote is the usual one hour length, there is no way Steve can use up the whole hour just to announce those. Either there is some new software (iLife 09/iWork 09) or new hardware ($899 netbook perhaps?).

Interesting. Blurry, but interesting. Though I bet the huge amount of glossy haters will be quick to shoot it down, it actually looks like a convincing photo!

is everyone forgetting that Sony sells PS3's for $400...

you know... the PS3... PlayStation 3, the one with the slot-loading Blu-Ray?

oh and it has a cell processor, and all sorts of crazy graphics stuff and the dualshock 3 and the wifi and the HDMI and all those other things?!

theres no way they cant get a better deal than $900 on a slot loading blu-ray (they being apple)

funny i'm typing this on a ps3 ;) (hated it before i played the little big planet beta lol)

*side note- i just got a bluetooth keyboard and dont get me wrong, i had a macbook- i loooove the chicklets, but this is seeming surprisingly unresponsive, is this a typical issue or should i return mine??

These Macbooks are gonna make other computers look like toys ? They don't even have a firewire port. lol THe $2,000 Macbook might have a firewire port. $1000 for a firewire option. Sounds like a good deal to me.

Apple is insane if they think they'll get away with these kinds of prices. An average of 40% more than the industry average for the estimated specs of tomorrow's notebooks. And in today's economy.

why are you lamenting a 13.3 mbp when all the devices look the same and there is a good change that the 13.3 mb will have a card that is atleast capable of driving a cinema display.

Because

1) They won't look the same. Similar yes, same no.
2) The MB will have a lot less gpu, HDD space, expandable ram, display res, etc. etc. than the MBP.

That is why he wants a 13.3" MBP and not a MB.

Wow, I like the black screen bezel. Looks slick and very iPhone like. I wonder if the Macbook will have the same look. Thanks to whom ever JR is. If they are released tomorrow in stores I am going to have to drive down to the Apple store and pick one up!

if there is this large of a price gap between the entry level and mid-level macbook there are huge cutbacks in components.

- no backlit
- integrated graphics
- 1GB RAM or 2GB RAM (possibly soldered)
- tiny hard drive
- no cd/dvd drive
- no firewire
- most likely not fully aluminum
- no audio input
- no ethernet
- standard gesture trackpad, nothing fancy
- low powered dual core processor (apple has gone completely dual-core and above)

it will be a very stripped down computer.

Because tray drives suck. They aren't sexy at all. Apple is all about 'sexy'. Case closed.

Tray drives

Pro:

you can stick a paperclip in the hole to force it to eject, should a program lock it up or the machine die with one of your CD drives inside.

they eject quicker

Con:

Noisy chattering when it thinks it cannot read the CD/DVD.

I almost broke many them because the tray was open and I hit it.

Slot load

Pro:

Quieter
no broken trays

con:

what happens with the disk will not eject?

Cons on both:

tray - circular scratches, especially on desktops where the disk is not locked onto a hub, rather just floating in the drawer.

slot - scratch or scuff marks where the arms grab the CD to suck it in, or push it out.

I saw an 8gb pny usb thumb drive for $28. still more pricey than DVD's, not sure I trust flash media for permanate storage.

someone Mentioned iwork 09? = please make that what MS office 2003 was and then I can ditch everything about MS except for my .NET and SQL-Server I need for work. Even the new CP Notebook 3.0 rocks and I no longer really have a need for MS onenote.

ilife 09 - please bring back the features and timeline that was in imovie 6 HD. I am all about effects. imovie hd6 is what my adobe premier elements 3.0 is.

You beat me to it!  :) :D

+1, i was just about to post it.

I'm having trouble deciding if i want a macbook or macbook pro. I will be getting the education discount, so hopefully if the macbook pro is $1799 and i could get it down to $1599 i am going for it. Plus i love the style of this macbook, if it is in fact it.

the reall macbook?

check this source this looks like the real thing

Actually if I recall correctly I believe it may just be a flat $100 off Macbooks and $200 off MBPs.

Not 100% sure but that is what I recall being told at the apple store.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong...

they wouldn't be telling you that at an apple store before the products have even been released.

Damn that MBP looks really nice. If the MB looks like a 13" version of that I'll be very happy from an aesthetics standpoint.

why are you lamenting a 13.3 mbp when all the devices look the same and there is a good change that the 13.3 mb will have a card that is atleast capable of driving a cinema display.

Because I want the portability of a 13.3" with the speeds of a 15" or 17". I don't need the screen real estate when I'm on the road, I can wait until I'm at my desk, and plug it into a 23" monitor there.

It's all about the more powerful CPU, GPU, and bus speeds. It has nothing to do with whether or not it can drive a cinema display. I know any MB or MBP can drive a 23" cinema display.

But I can't make a MB perform like an MBP by "docking it" to a cinema display. Likewise I cannot make a 15" or 17" laptop fit into a small backpack by "undocking it" from the cinema display. A really powerful small screen laptop would serve my purposes perfectly.

Does that make some sense now?

We don't even know the real price points and/or specs yet?

But look at Apple's price and specs now.

Apple laptop sales have increased dramatically while all others have dropped.

Something I just noticed about that picture. Where is the mouse clicker and where is the power button?

Good luck trying to fit that PS3 Blu-Ray drive inside a laptop!

not sure what to make of this. the baseline is $200 cheaper than the current baseline model and the top MB model is $100 more expensive than the current one???
