1. Bluray (a slimline BR drive for a laptop is about $300-400)

Could you provide a source for that price? I'm curious more than doubtful. I did a quick Google search for slot loading Blu-Ray drives and the best I could find was $900.

Part of me hopes Apple has set out fake prices and is going to drop the bombshell that the new macbook is 599.

Why is OSX not ready? I have a wacom bamboo plugged into my macbook and it seem pretty darn ready to me.

I don't think it's ready they still need to figure out how to integrate all of the programs to work on top of getting everything to work with an acceleromator

What is the harm of asking what the discount will be for a student. I am sure many people will need to know how much something will potentially cost so they can plan the purchase. I, for one, tend to get as much information as possible. The education discount should be a valid question as should the question of whether that discount works at Best Buy. Is a public forum like this limited to only speculation about things you like to talk about? ;)

Questions about how to get a discount fine but those "so how much will it be exactly?" questions just erks me. Nobody knows until tomorrow. We cannot even guess a rough ball park to what it's going to be. All we can do is speculate. Sorry if I came over the top did not mean to offend.

I looked at your link. 11 ratings and only 1 star? something gotta be wrong with it.

Does it even matter? The fact is, superdrives are in every PC laptop on the market, starting from $400. And yet you can't get a superdrive on a $1100 Macbook.

I just hope the 899 model is a low cost Macbook preferably without a disc drive so its lighter and still all aluminum! I am not to worried about specs as I just use it for typing and surfing (reading Macrumors). Haha but I hope the others do include FW and have decent specs for still being 1,299!

the air?

yeah they wouldnt make 2

While amazing, that's impossible. That's like hoping Apple will be letting users download snow leopard for free in January.

Obviously the Macbook would be a totally different class. Think Asus EEE PC or MSI Wind. It could be as underpowered as they are and cost 200-300 dollars more with Apple.

It's not impossible if Apple were to actually provide a actual low-end notebook, which all your average user needs. Us at the forums are exceptions who actually need power. Your average consumer doesn't, and as such, there should be a VERY cheap Apple notebook available.

APPLE SUCK! $899 will be something similar to 17" imac- low cpu, small hd, little memory dvd reader only and cheapened in any other possible way.

Hmmm..

I struck out on my distributor's site for the new part numbers but they might not have the new ones loaded yet, have them tagged for apple authorized only or the new models aren't going to be shipping right away.

I'd bet the later. Not shipping right away. A 'pre-announcement' from Apple...

Who thinks I'm close to the mark?

You should be so lucky!

Slot loading Blu-Ray drives are not cheap $900 for this example:
http://www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/product.php?productid=17116

Not sure why everyone is so optimistic about slot loading Blu-Ray, it might be an option on the high end or as a BTO config, but you can't expect to pay normal laptop prices and get one 'thrown in'.

Well I have found several slimline slot loading blu-ray burners for under $500.00.

I bet Apple can get a bulk order slot-loading blu-ray players for $200.00 or less.

I would get the air but for some reason its ridiculous over priced! I guess I should have said have a combo drive because I don't think I will ever burn a dvd. But it would be nice if they did make a 899 model with no disc drive, I can dream! Also I really hope they are not two tone I just think that would look bad, but if anyone can pull it off its Steve, so I am interested to see what happens tomorrow. Better charge the iphone tonight since I have class all day!!

I see your point. I agree that nobody even knows what the retail price will be yet so it is hard to speculate on the discount. I was just trying to figure out if the education discount would still apply and if Best Buy offers it as well as the Apple stores. I am sure it will be the somewhat standard $100 off. Anything helps these days! HA! :p (You did not offend. No harm done) ;)

What if the $899 notebook was one that you can upgrade as you want...

:D I'm gonna have wet Apple dreams tonight!

Purchase Time...

Well, I really hope it is at least Wednesday the 15th and not three weeks later...

Again, why does Apple need to use slot-loading drives? Why don't they just make their notebooks slightly thicker, and sell Blu-ray BTO tray-loading options for $150 like HP and everyone else?
