Again, why does Apple need to use slot-loading drives? Why don't they just make their notebooks slightly thicker, and sell Blu-ray BTO tray-loading options for $150 like HP and everyone else?

Because tray drives suck. They aren't sexy at all. Apple is all about 'sexy'. Case closed.

All y'all complaining about prices, go buy your Dells and Acers, no one is forcing you to pay Apple prices, you choose to pay and then complain. You don't think acer or hp want to charge Apple prices, I mean who doesnt want to make more money. Unfortunately they can't because they can't really differentiate from other PC makers while Apple can so suck it up or go buy a Dell.

Are you staff or student at a university or college, if you are your good, all you have to do is enter your student/employee number. If you aren't a student and you want the discount anyway, be warned, that sounds illegal.

I'm a student. I have not used a student discount since the original Video iPod came out and I don't remember how I got a discount then as it was a few years ago. Thats why I am asking as I never bought a Student ID at College ($40 for a picture that serves no purpose).

Also letter K means that it is made for education market- in schools laptops oversell desktops.

Current Generation MacBooks...

Do you guys think they will completely stop selling them, or will they reduce the cost to get rid of stock? Maybe the basic white version will be the $899 model...

Looking at the 1599 MacBook. Damn can't wait.
at $100 more then mac book black

It better have a 15" screen and / or a real video card with it's own ram.

$1600 for intel gma is a joke on board nvidia is better but it will need 128-256+ of vram.

The low end should a NVIDIA TurboCache based card with 32-128+ on board.

NVIDIA TurboCache will also be good for the mini.

Is there any chance that these are NOT the prices that are going to be shown tomorrow?

Heck, Steve could walk out, do a soft shoe, say the economy sucks so bad they are waiting to release the new equipment, do a silhouette puppet show with the glare from the projector, pull out a guitar and sing old Rolling Stones songs and end by juggling chain saws and announcing that Magrathea is closing down until things change in the galactic economy. DON'T PANIC!!

OR

He could announce that the entry level MacBook is going to be $899 and all of the other rubbish people have been foaming about tonight...

In Apple retail stores, you may be able to get a good deal if you go in and ask if the old models are still for sale. They had the PPC mac minis in my local store for like $100 off after they went to intel.

Why don't they just make their notebooks slightly thicker, and sell Blu-ray BTO tray-loading options for $150...

- Slot loading saves space
- Greater flexibility for case/chassis design
- Looks better
- Tray loading drives are prone to damage (either the tray itself or the bezel)
- Doesn't fit with Apples design guidelines at the moment

I'm not saying it's good that Apple insist on slot loading drives, they can be a bit fussy with mini CDs or DVDs (i.e they'll get stuck inside!) and they're more expensive. But these are the reasons I think Apple stick with slot loading.

What I wish...

What's the K, that's the question.

What I want it to be:

The melding of iPhone and MacBook technology. It'll run OS/X - full blown - install what you want on it (but it'll have no optical drive, like the air). It'll allow bluetooth keyboard and mouse, but also be nearly fully operational with touch semantics.

It may have only solid state drives - at 32GB or some such "too small" point, but with wireless connectivity, it is possible to use networked drives in such a way that the limitation of <100GB memory livable.

It won't be a phone at all. It will be a networkable tablet computer.

What it will be:

A really, really, stripped down macbook. No touch, no dvd burner. Just a very elegant "sub-notebook" style computer. It will weigh almost nothing, but contain a lot of features for its class. Competing products from Dell/Toshiba/Sony/Acer/whomever will cost $200-$250 less but will have fewer features and simply feel like toys in comparison.

Because tray drives suck. They aren't sexy at all. Apple is all about 'sexy'. Case closed.

I thought Apple was all about their superior OS. I actually view their line of computers as a liability from using their excellent OS to its max at a reasonable cost. The notebook thinness and no tray-loading drives are just two of the sacrifices Apple makes at the expense of the consumer's wallet and the available features.

Last I checked, a while ago, the 'student discount' on an IMac was... ready? $100.00!

So if your ID costs $40.00 you saved $60.00.

No 13" MBP. Bummer.

Looks like I'm gonna get
- M97, MB467LL/A $1,599.00 - MacBook, or
- M98, MB470LL/A $1,999.00 - 15" MacBook Pro, or
- M98, MB471LL/A $2,499.00 - 15" MacBook Pro.

Do you think the difference between
- M97, MB466LL/A $1,299.00 - MacBook and
- M97, MB467LL/A $1,599.00 - MacBook is a FireWire port?

Savin' my pennies!

I really hope your right on this!!!

My only hesitation is that it would probably be a show stopper for the MacBook Air. They either need to update the MacBook Air to make it a smaller (10 inch screen?) subnotebook, or increase the spec and drop the price.

- they can be a bit fussy with mini CDs or DVDs (i.e they'll get stuck inside!) and they're more expensive.

I can assure that you should forget about mini cd or dvd format if you own slot loading apple computer.

Has any Apple computer product started with a model number with a "K" as this price sheet does? I cant find one. Not recently.

macbook

Check out apple store sweden. MacBook pro now with multitouch....

Who thinks I'm close to the mark?

I think you're close, but no cigar. I just can't seen a high-end MB topping out at 2.8 GHz. Let's leave that for the Pros. I think the two high-end models will top out at 2.5 GHz, while the low-end MB will be 2.4GHz.

I'm pretty sure that most people would rather a slot-loading drive over a tray drive.

It seems that you're in the wrong place as this is a Mac-centric forum and you're in a thread about new hardware.

speculate

could anybody with some knowledge of macs speculate why there is such a big price change ($500) between the 2 15 inch macbook pros, I was thinking of getting one and was wondering what some peoples opinions on what that $500 option could be.
