OK, Beric. I have heard this rant from you before but what I would like to know is what performance spec is the MBP seriously lacking in? I realize that the current model is pricey for the outdated spec that it currently contains but it is being updated soon.

However, when the MBP was last updated in March what spec was it deficient in at that time.

Apple is using the fastest mobile processor that intel offered in March. The discrete GPU while not the fastest back in March was still an above average mobile GPU.

Blu-ray could have been offered in March but Apple wasn't ready yet and it probably would have required the case redesigned which was planned for tomorrow.

The main lack is a high-end GPU and #1: the prices. There is nothing Apple can put into this revision to make the 15" model worth $2000 (or any 15" model worth more than that). Not Blu-ray, not high-def screens, not a faster processor, not bigger hard drives, not more RAM, not anything. The heat of such a thin notebook (thinness accomplishes nothing) is also a big issue.

If this new MBP revision costed $1500 I would buy it. Anything more on even the high-end model and it is seriously overpriced, and I will yet again wish for either OS X on PC's, or a more spec-focused notebook.

My guess:

MacBook "Classic": Same shell and specs as the current $1,099 model for only $899.

MacBook "New": Aluminum shell but with slick iMac like screen and bezel. Black keyboard, upgraded graphics, DVD burner. Price? $1,299.

MacBook Air: Big news will be a price drop but with some basic upgraded specs. New Price? $1,499.

MacBook Pro: Similar shell as new MacBook but with 15 and 17" screen options, matte or glossy. Processor speeds up to 3ghz. BTO Blu-Ray drive. Price drop. Starting at only $1,799.

I think those are competitive models and price points to meet most buyers.

The big surprise tomorrow might be the inclusion of a quad core processor option for the 17" model. I'm not even sure that that's available yet but Apple would probably get first dibs at the unveiling of it.

Um, that's the old MBP, doofus! :p

Sorry I went to the Apple and that as the homepage, I got excited and don't own a Pro, but why would that be the homepage and say all new Macbook Pro? Did someone mess up getting ready to update tm?

I'm no photography expert, but is it possible for a photo to be HALF blurry? It seems like this picture is much blurrier on the left than on the right.

Very possible. If the camera moves during the exposure, then parts of the picture with more motion will be blurrier than those with less.

For example, if the camera motion is a rotation centered on the right side of the screen -- then the right side would appear sharper than the left. It's simple geometry.

In this picture, look at the "squiggle" in the dark area above the center left of the keyboard. It suggests that the center of rotation is near the upper right corner of the laptop screen -- which by no coincidence seems to be the sharpest part of the photo.

Not that easy to Photoshop well - so in fact the uneven blurriness is evidence that the photo is real.

The first set is from Best Buy which show placeholders for new Apple notebooks at current prices. While some people are using this as a reason to doubt price drops on the new laptops, we should point out that a BestBuy employee has said that they have no prior knowledge from Apple and Best Buy employees insert these placeholders based on circulating rumors.

I can't believe that in all 21 pages of this thread no one has mentioned the above line. These prices are "placeholders" -- in other words they're made up!!! Stop building your theories on air castles!!!

I may be attacked for saying this and it already may have been said, too many posts to check. However, the original believed price of $800 could still technically exist if we view it as the starting price point for the student discount on the laptops.

OK, take away...

Like most PC laptops?

Sorry, I've never owned a Mac before, but can't I just double tap the pad to make it select links and such? Do I have to touch the click button?

You can use either the trackpad for taps or the button.

You can right click by tapping with two fingers.

You can drag with one and a half taps on the trackpad.

All these options are in System Preferences, along with multi touch options on newer machines.

Yeah bud, those "placeholders" were brought to our attention weeks ago. A RUMOR has been posted today about prices along with the model numbers updating those place holders. Isnt that what this website is? A RUMOR website?

So what exactly does your $1800 MBP have that would make it better than the $1400 HP in my post here?

I think the obvious answer is the operating system, but I can understand how that's kind of a cop-out. I dont' want to get involved in your argument, but personally I have no interest in using windows and if I have to pay more for a similarly spec'd computer I'd be willing to do so. But, in terms of straight hardware, the $1400 machine does appear to be better (or at least equal)

Latest Update from Engadget...

Update 2: Our source just hit us again to say that it's two full-on NVIDIA GPUs -- wild. Wilder still, they say the MacBook and 17-inch MacBook Pro aren't getting refreshed tomorrow, which we find hard to believe, but we'll see when we see.

Remember, Apple uses the same parts as every other PC manufacturer. And it doesn't cost more money for them to install OS X on it. :p

I understand that, but they also have the exclusive rights to their opperating system and legally speaking, your paying for the ability to have os x because no other computers can.

did anyone else see update 2 on engadget? I find it hard to blieve now, their saying only 15" gets updated, not mb and 17", and 15" gets dual nvidia gfx cards

I just read that!! They can't be serious they have to update all models tomorrow, I will be so disappointed if MB's don't get updated. But I am betting they will be!

And that's exactly my point. If HP can sell that laptop for a profit and put Windows on it, Apple can sell it for a profit and put OS X on it.

I like how with my Macs when I add new programs or updates my computer doesn't crash, but that's just me.

Bring on the $899 model. Hopefully it'll be an all around machine that makes the $1,299 one worth the premium.

I would so love for it to be an ultraportable (11-12" non widescreen) or a netbook. I'd instantly buy it. Holding out on a Lenovo S10 solely based on this announcement!

Where the hell is click button below the trackpad??? 1pm EST can't come soon enough :(

With three finger multi touch there is no need for a click button. I am all for this. I do not like the click button on my current MB and would dearly love for this to disappear.

Yep. So maybe the leaked pictures are for 13" and 15" MBPs. If there really are 12 price points, some of those might include the existing notebooks that aren't being updated (according to this new info on engadget). The rest could be student-oriented plastic notebooks that come in colors like the Nano?

I missed out on the Key Lime iBook a long time ago, and I'm still holding out for a lime green notebook from Apple.
