Well I personally cannot wait for the new MacBook.

MacBook + Free Printer after rebate + Nearly Free iPod Nano 4gb after rebate + Edu Discount including dirt cheap 3Y AppleCare = Sold :D

as i see it, having the video out connector toward the middle and not toward the back like it currently is, is a pretty poor idea. the dv plug itself is a fair size and the cable is pretty thick and somewhat inflexible, making it awkward to place in front of the usb/firewire connectors.

love to know what that taped over hole on the macbook pro's side is though.

B. New Cinema displays and a possible TV would have HDMI
I don't buy it. If Apple brings out a television, it'll be just like the Cube—expensive and it won't sell very well. It'll probably be LCD so you're ignoring 70% of the market for watching movies. Anyone who's serious about movies uses a plasma or has their home theater setup with a projector. And then there's the issue of size. One size doesn't fit all; I can't see Apple bringing out multiple sizes either.

Additionally, seeing the Cinema Displays languish, I'm beginning to think Apple is getting out of the display business entirely. I still love my 30" but Apple seems committed on shipping LED backlit displays and won't do so until prices plummet. That might be another year or so or until they completely sell out of the existing stock.

As far as the Macbook not having firewire. I believe what people think is USB 2.0 is actually USB 3.0.
A consumer product having bleeding-edge technology? Sorry, that's not going to happen. It'll happen on the MBP first if anything.

I'll be honest, I think the pics are fake, or at least the casing is. It would be dumb not to include FireWire. Apple is smarter. I also think they are better at design then thinning the computer and rounding the edges. What I like about the MBA is that it has edges, yet maintains simplicity. Apple can't recreate a portable iMac, like these spy shots suggest, that's not new. I think Apple will blow us away with the new design - particularly the screen setup. Apple needs a simple and cool design to compete with Sony. Taking some pointers from the iPhone 3G on the MB would make sense. Taking some pointers from the iPod touch would also make sense.

as i don't use USB for editing - can anyone here attest if connecting a video camera thru USB and a USB ext hdd is effective for capturing and then editing video?

You can't transfer DV video to a computer over USB. It simply cannot be done. The only thing you can transfer are inferior, compressed formats that are recorded to memory, rather than tapes, like MPEG.

3D cad? on mac? which? how? where? why? gimme!

On OSX I use a program called SolidThinking Vantage. As a designer it's great, but if you are more of a 'numbers' type, it's not as exact as SolidWorks. I find it to be quick and easy to use. For simpler stuff, my MB handles it well. However, with larger projects it bogs down and when rendering images it gets slow and jerky. Since I am a student, the program was cheap and I have had great support from the company. At retail, it is still cheaper than SolidWorks and you don't need to install Windoze on your machine!

Hello MBP!

After staring at the pics again, looks like ethernet ports are there to me...oops.

Damn, I got excited that there was some super magic hidden 3d mac cad for my needs, that's what apple needs, Mac Cad;)

and another thing...

never mind all this USB, F/W stuff, where's my ADB port!?
Still keeping my old beige keyboard just in case!
(I have a Mac Pro, but the new keyboard is like typing on a piece of toast)

With the 9600 graphics card having a higher max memory, will it also have a higher base memory, meaning the new mbp's would have at least 512mb, and up to 1024? I hope so, that might be the clincher for me actually.

This brings up a question that I've been trying to understand for a couple of days...Why does everyone think backlit keyboards are so great? I mean do people look at the keyboard that much? And even so doesn't your screen even on lowest setting light up the keyboard enough to see it?

I have nothing against backlit keyboards, and I've never used one, but I've also never said "Man, I wish I had a backlit keyboard" so I'd just like to get an understanding on this.

Consensus?

Given the shoddy "tapemanship" over the mystery-hole, is there a general consensus that it was intentionally taped-over (not tape left on from the factory)? Also, has anyone determined that there is anything under it (not just PSd or tape colored to look like there is something behind it)?

No I look at the keyboard all the time, I'm terrible at that. And when you sit with a laptop on your lap the screen is pointed up slightly and does almost nothing for the keyboard, so you end up leaning forward and squinting to see the keys. I do it all the time.

thanks.

if this is true, then it will be one small step for MB, one giant leap back...

not that i care as i am not in the market for a notebook. it certainly does fall in line with apple's history in differentiating their products. theres a clearer line now between the two notebook lines, which prob makes it easier for sales people. but, in the end, the tough choices are still being made by the consumer. it should be the other way around. but, oh, well. i digress.

The new Macs will be powered by wireless "intangible induction" via the troposphere which Apple has been effectively "charging" since 2000. This technique borrows several of Nikola Tesla's patents filed in the late 19th century. Their licenses were released 80 years after their filer's death and Tesla, having no estate, left no one to claim them. Apple scooped them up before GE.

LOL JUST KIDDING THATS IMPOSSIBLE

Well I'm pretty sure there is a hole there under the tape, that's what it looks like to me but I can't prove anything, but also if you look at the inside of the case it looks like there is another different piece of tape (as in not one solid piece of tape that just wraps around from front to back) on the inside in the same spot.

I don't get it either. I never ever look at my keyboard. Regardless, there are people who are passionate about backlit.

The new Mc Mini

Sure would be cool if they sold a product that could be used as a laptop or a desktop, a la Mac Mini. $600.00 for the 'brick' and you get what's essentially a Mac Mini. $800 gets you the same thing with a bright, sharp, fully detachable 13" display. Not that I would be in a position to know...I just like leaving cryptic comments.

Why would you need a fully detachable display when you can just close it?

No firewire will be the first thing that PC users will throw in the face of Mac users :/

"Once again, Apple lacks in hardware!"

Argh!
