The Macbook Mirage

;) I too would love it if the macbook was released tomorrow... but reliable sources seem to be alluding otherwise. :( Most sources (e.g. http://www.forbes.com/technology/feeds/afx/2006/04/03/afx2643961.html) seem to agree that the macbook is to be released this June. Hopefully, Apple will satisfy its customers with an early release date. Either way, we are helpless to do anything but let this pastime play itself out. :D By the way, does anyone happen to know if the macbook is to replace the 12" powerbook? I have been waiting for months to get the 12" powerbook, and the night before I was finally determined to order one, news of the 13.3" macbook came out. Does Apple even have plans of replacing the 12" powerbook? If so... when? Ah, soooo many questions.... Please enlighten me with any information that you think will be of assistance. Thanks! :)

I believe it will be replacing both iBooks and the 12" Powerbook, that's why the size is in between and will probably come in two models with different processor and video specs..

I'll believe that MacBooks are coming out tomorrow only if Rob Enderle, John Dvorak, and Paul Thurrott say so.

Also, if Digitimes reports it, that just lends more credibility to the rumor.

;) :D

I still think a 13.3" widescreen will feel small, but I'm interested in seeing if Apple goes back to offering different colors.

Not to all the people that love the 12" iBook/PowerBook form factor, and there are a LOT of us. Add a widescreen that will have a lower profile than those 12" notebooks and only a slightly larger width? BONUS!!!

now just give me some metallic [iPod mini-like] colors and it's game over man... GAME OVER!!!

;) :)

I have two brand new flash drives, both 256 MB, one is a Sony and one is a PNY.

Neither one will work with the keyboard ports, so you aren't alone.

I wonder what the deal is with that.

to get back on topic (my fault) who remembers those rumors of a 'smaller, sexier ibook image', directed at females, if I recall correctly? I'm curious what kind of changes we'll see to make these new macbooks "sexier" and more feminine than the ibooks. personally, I thought the ibook design was pretty feminine to begin with. maybe they'll really cut down on width. I would love a subnotebook with an equally sub $ tag. I don't think tha'ts likely to happen though. I like 13.5". call me stupid but I always thought the g3/g4 ibooks looked a little honky, primarily because of their square shape. Strange, that never bothered me about the powerbooks...

Well, you see, there's this website called 'Google' and it's the darndest thing... :p ;)

Just bugging ya - here are some links I have on the subject.

whoa... sounds complicated. i still don't get it though... :( when i say the word "holograph storage", i think of the cool 3-d rainbow pictures being used in hard drives to store a lot of stuff.

It's not just semantics; it makes a big difference if they're in the same "family" or not. Professional people don't want to take a white plastic ibook in to a business meeting. Also, the build quality on the ibooks is nowhere near that on the powerbooks. (I've owned both.)

But the problem with your answers is that you depart from the same old paradigm of "white/childish" iBook and "pro" PB...you must let go of such belief...we are talking about new lines now, new computers...

Just to give you an example, let's imagine a black/graphite MacBook, all spec'ed up with Core Duo, iSight, great design/HD/RAM and good GPU...who WOULDN'T take it to a biz meeting? That's what I am talking about...streamlined factory lines, optimized inventories...

Apple can perfectly create a MB "almost pro" to occupy the niche of the old PB 12"...at the same time, use a similar casing/form factor to give you cheap/college offerings, all in black/white plus other colors (à la iPod Mini perhaps?). But they now have the chance to use the same design for both market targets..because the power is there, as well as the demand.

This way, all audiences would be happy...the "hip", the "poor student" and the "pro/business"...trust me.

Many of us don't want to take a white plastic *anything* *anywhere*.

"white plastic" == "fugly"

That's why I have a red Nano (the original) and a black Nano (the Apple one).

Too bad Apple ships white headphones and USB cable with the black Nano. For a company so consumed with "style", that seems to be an egregious oversight.

Aiden, rest assured that "fugly" white is way nicer and more stylish than the "brick graphite" of all Dells and Gateways out there...actually you must be forgetting how many iBook clones exist in the PC business, including Sony and Toshiba...and almost EVERYBODY thinks iBooks are the coolest in any class/business gathering of notebooks...

I really want Apple to launch something today but why not wait till Sunday. Also does it matter if tomorrow is the results webcast. It would make more sense annoncing on the webcast instead of today. Apart from these negative issues I reallllllllly want an announcement today.
Come on Apple

I dont know why i should think that anything is going down today. that macworld article was completely inconclusive. I wont be let down.

Worst case for the 17" MacBook Pro is most likely this coming Sunday's April 23 Apple NAB Press Event. Meanwhile the MacBook might surface this week as all of next week's BUZZ AIR will be centered on what is announced Sunday. Then we're into May so this week looks promising.

I can't tell which is a better way to deal with the MacBook announcement, before or after NAB. Anyone know which order would be more effective?

I'm thinkin' MacBook by Wednesday and 17" MacBook Pro at NAB. I'm still holding out hope for a 13.3" widescreen MacBook Pro though. Especially with last weeks Universal Binary release of Aperture and it's $200 price drop, $299 from $499!

That's HUGE for professional photographers, and since the 12" PowerBook was aimed directly at them and any professional "on the go" who required maximum portability with the Power/Pro lines functionailty, i believe we'll see both 13" and 17" MacBook Pro's at NAB.

Ideally I would like to see [NO integrated graphics in ANY MacBook! ATI x1300 at least please, Apple!]:

The following might not happen until WWDC because of the name "Mac Pro" not being official yet, BUT with all of the hype surrounding Leopard and the extra time that I'm sure Apple will devote to it nowwith the publicity surrounding Boot Camp, AND Leopard Server since miCrapsoft has now said that it will be releasing "winBlows xPee sPee 3" [vista] for businesses in November [prior to it's consumer release in January '07], along with the time needed to introduce the Mac Pros [PowerMac replacements] AND probably new Xserves, maybe SJ and Apple will say "Meh. I'm done prophecising for now. :D

Cant somebody go pester the people in an apple store and ask them when the next delivery is coming or when they are expecting macbooks or how many ibooks they got left. Surely if there is a mac delivery expected today at apple stores then macbooks look very possible.

Apple dont really have a mac between the powermacs and imacs. MAy sound stupid but there is a big gap between mini and imacs and imacs and powermacs.

Look at the post right below yours. This is my prediction:

Mac Pro mini [upgradeable mini-towers with a single socketed[?... I hope] 32-bit Yonah Core Duo processor]:
- $1099 [128 VRAM + 160GB 7200 rpm hard drive]
- $1399 [256 VRAM + 250GB 7200 rpm hard drive].
(BOTH iMacs AND PowerMacs use 7200 rpm hard drives in those same capacities for the low end and high end models BTW)

Well, we can cross Tuesday April 18th off..... nothing happening today now. :(

It's only 5am here on the West Coast where Apple is based. Last Tuesday, Apple released Remote Desktop 3 at around 6am PST. Wednesday the week before, Apple released Boot Camp at around 6am as well.

This now seems to be normal for them, because they also used to update their website at anywhere between 8am-12pm.

Bottom line, give Apple at least about an hour [6am PST] and up to around 5, or even 7 hours [12pm PST].

Nah, you're just talking headless iMac (as I've heard a thousand times before). Apple will not cut in its own iMac sales. Apple's offering was: The $1499 single processor PowerMac. You could change the graphics card and upgrade hard-disk/ram yourself. Big mistake on Apple's part to scrap that one.

Since we are talking price points....

I was wondering what the new price of the Macbook will be. the iBooks start from $999, but the 12" Powerbooks are $1499. I am guessing that the new Macbook will come at a price of $1299. And the 13" Macbook Pro will go for $1499. But I assume that there will be hardly any difference between the Pro and non-Pro. Maybe optical-drive and hard disk size or so.

And an interesting point reviewing the products in the Apple store: Why does the Macbook Pro come with single channel memory for it's default configuration and the Mac Mini only has dual channel configurations even for built-to-order (yeah I know the mini needs it for it's 3D-performance because of shared video memory). Or is Apple just kind and 'allow' you to buy that 2nd memory strip from a 3rd party?

Mac Pro Mini would be perfect, C'est magnifique.

I think we should start a rumour about this and see how far it can get in a certain period of time. eg see if its a hot topic within a week.. someone send it to think secret. Tell em its coming tomarrow.

I said "This is my prediction".

Whether it's in the near future [like next week at NAB] or at WWDC when the Mac Pros will be introduced [more likely, since they'll probably be significantly re-designed], it's obvious that Apple has a HUGE product line AND price gap between the highest end Mac mini Intel @ $799 and the lowest Power Mac non-Intel @ $1999.

That's $1200 "epepper9", FYI. And let's see, who likes to upgrade their desktop computers and not use integrated graphics? Hmmm... let's see. OH! GAMERS!. But there's no games for Mac. OH! BOOT CAMP!

Does 2 + 2 = 5 to any of you who are lyfao? Here's a dime, go buy a clue.

I hope that Apple will introduce a miniature version of the Power Mac tower to compete with all of those sub-$1000 - $1500ish towers offered by ALL of the other PC manufacturers. Apple will clean up in that market now that they've introduced Boot Camp.

Again, I say [by WWDC]:

Mac Pro Mini
[upgradeable mini-towers with a single socketed[?... I hope] 32-bit Yonah Core Duo processor]:
- $1099 [128 VRAM + 160GB 7200 rpm hard drive]
