MacBooks next month eh? So, whats that the THIRD try the rumour sites have had at guessing it's release date?

I strongly disagree with you DKZ. A dual core Intel will compute rings around any mobile G4 simply because it is dual core. Multiprocessing makes for a much more rewarding computing experience no matter how slow. G4 is SLOW. And PROVEN SLOW. :p
Depends on what you're doing. If you're running a lot of Adobe apps, which probably won't go Universal until early 2007 at the earliest, then you're better off getting a refurb iBook G4 (for $800) and use it for a 18 months+ while developers migrate fully to Intel and Apple has had a chance to work out all the bugs from the intel transition.

Personally, I'm waiting because of 1) the ability to run Windows apps in virtualization and 2) all the extra goodies MacBooks will offer like FrontRow, iSight, etc. The end-user experience will vary greatly depending on what kind of apps you want to run. You should always buy a computer that fulfills your needs and not let the latest and greatest craze dictate your decisions.

Apple Event Sunday April 23rd Is An Annual Event

Multimedia,

You have mentioned several times about an Apple Special Event on Sunday, April 23rd? Do you know this for sure, or are you going by past experience? If you got an invitation, what time on the 23rd is the event supposed to be?
Apple has had a press conference on the Sunday eve of the NAB Expo opening for about the past 7 years ever since Final Cut Pro 1 shipped in I can't remember what year. There are 20-30 press conferences on that Sunday every year at NAB. Apple's will be no exception. No invitation is necessary to attend, only NAB press credentials. I am certain this will happen Sunday afternoon. And, no, I do not know when. Usually it is late afternoon as Panasonic and Sony events are held earlier in the day. You can bank on it since Universal FCS 5.1 just shipped and this market wants and needs a powerful 17" MacBook Pro for field HDV and HD editing. :) There is NO DOUBT it will happen. NONE.

I don't know, Multimedia. You may be right. But in year's past, we have heard in advance that Apple was having a Special Media Event at NAB. There is no such invite circulating this time. I would feel a little more solid about it if there were an invite.

Last year, there was rumors of new Power Mac G5s — lo and behold, they weren't released. Even AppleInsider at the time said that Apple doesn't usually use NAB to announce new hardware. Now I understand that this year is a little different with the Intel switch and all.

Last year's event started at 11:00 AM PST.

Yes, it will, but I was talking about a Core Solo, which I believe there is a very big chance is going to end up i the lowest priced Macbook. And do people that go for a 12" ibook really need all that power? No they need portability, which means small form factor, reliability and long batteri life. All three things that right now isn't looking to be improved with the macbook. I'm buying a 12" ibook (or perhaps more trying it out, here in denmark you can return anything bought on the net within a 14 day period, no questions asked, it just needs to be working.) If I like it, and my criteries is: a quick and responsive UI, portability and that it makes my tummy tinckle with love for the little machine. If those things come thru, I won't care how the macbook turns out. Plus I'm sick and tired of waiting, plus I hate this secrecy crap from Apple.

I'm looking to switch to a mac notebook soon and battery life is very important to me. Do you think that the new macbooks will have poorer battery life due to the intel processors? If that's the case then I may just buy a g4.

Yes I do, I really do. No 12" Centrino I've ever heard of can brag of the battery time a G4 will give you. And since Apple isn't going the work their magic on this machine, and Asus isn't know for being able to magically imbue batteries with twice the normal power, I really do not believe that they will be able to match the battery time.

You should always buy a computer that fulfills your needs and not let the latest and greatest craze dictate your decisions.

Exactly, there is always more hardware to wait for.

this from an article in AI..

"Apple will not announce an Intel iBook (MacBook) until July, seeing as Apple said its strong educational buying months fall between July and September. "Also," the analyst said, "Apple's guidance for the June quarter does not appear to factor in an uptick in iBook, adding to our confidence that the new iBook won't ship until July."
This rumor actually makes sense...SO goodbye for now..see you in JULY. unless I buy something else..which i may have to.,....bummer

I don't really buy that. Even if those are the biggest buying months, and even if they don't ship until july, they'll definitely announce before then because people will be making decisions before that. I'd be very surprised if they don't announce sometime in may.

Some posters have said that maybe the new MacBook would have problems with Leopard. All this speulating that the specs they predict for the MB are correct.
Could this really happen? I mean, could Apple really do this?

I read that the MacMini (the ones of the Panther era) had troubles using Tiger. Is this correct?

First May, then June, now July ? You're losing a customer here Apple

I'm not 100% sure about this, but didn't Apple originally announce that it would be released in June, not in May? Most rumor sites are always positive that it will be released at the next event, so I don't invest too much in the rumors.

I've been waiting to buy an iBook for seven months, but I didn't realize that the wait would be so long. I was always sure that it would be released within a few weeks, but weeks turned into months... But I'm not breaking down yet, because as soon as I buy an iBook, a Macbook will be released. :p

It's not AI's rumor based on insided sources, rather they are simply quoting what one analyst has said, who has no inside information.

Note what he says: "Apple's guidance for the June quarter does not appear to factor in an uptick in iBook, adding to our confidence that the new iBook won't ship until July."

Now that's one analyst who has it partially right, but he's misreading the information. The June quarter doesn't show it because the MacBook is going to be released in May.

You must have missed the another Analyst's report from today, which states: "the analyst said he expect Apple to introduce a new iBook (MacBook) with an Intel processor in time for the K-12 school-buying season, which begins in June." So their is another analyst pointing to a May release, probably because he has his ear to these sites.

Just yesterday AI reported that the MacBook release "is now rumored to have been pushed back to 'next month,'" meaning May.

And the good news is that the MacBook should be available immediately with no preannouncement and wait for 6 weeks. More than likely some Tuesday in May the Apple Store will go down around 7AM CT and then go back up within the hour with new MacBooks. Wooo-hooo!

im deffinately going to buy a macbook (or whatever they're going to be called). im not sure if anyone is in the same boat, but the only two reasons that ill purchase that and not a current ibook g4 is due to the possibilities of 1- front row
2- built in isight

obviously its nice to have the newest product out there, as i really dont need it to be an intel chip, very fast or superdrive. simply after a portable with front row that i can hook up to my tv.

now... if apple sold 'front row' as a piece of software, id simply buy a g4 and front row. (the isight and photobooth is a luxury to have fun with)

The waiting paradox

The longer the wait goes on the more one is (a) annoyed and (b) tempted to stop waiting and buy something else but also, and here is the paradox, the longer we wait the closer we must be getting to the actual release date which may make you regret not waiting - therefore it makes less sense to stop waiting the longer you wait.

I need a lie down.

I can't wait to buy an intel iBook (would be my first mac) but I'm scared of the first ones to come out being plagued with all sorts of issues like the macbooks. :(

I am obviously incredibly lucky because I have had no issues whatsoever with my MBP. It looks and feels like a Mac, only a really fast one.

Analysts are useless. Oooh 8 and 10gb nano's coming soon. A four your old could predict higher end products. Analysts not only state the obvious but usually have no clue.
