Or you could spend $600 on an xbox 360(and some games) that was made specifically for gaming purposes, save a load of money, and play games in higher quality.

At the meeting with analysts recently, Apple expressed concern about whether they would be able to produce a MacBook for under $1000, no? That would certainly mean no $799 MacBook. No chance.

I think it's still a possibility.

Intel Core Duo 2.16Ghz
1.5GB ram
120GB Hard Drive
ATI Radeon X1800/512
iSight/Front Row
8x Superdrive

$799

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

$799 is way to much for that they would match the Mac Mini pricing with those specs $599 for sure.

Yeah, I was thinking the price might be a bit too high... but I figured i'd let apple have the benefit of the doubt. They often price things too high.

man,
My main reasoning is this: If apple is just about to release a new "MacBook", which will
more than likely be one of there best selling products ever. Why would they start the Mac Campaign and TV adds now....You would think they would wait until it was out, so they could show the whole line (again, only if it is so close)..makes sense to me (or no sense,,I don;t know anymore)..So I'm thinking everyone is way way off.
Apple did it, they converted me, and just when I am ready to buy..I may have to walk.

Your logic seems really right, though I hope it isn't. I am sure the Macbook will be out latest in July, but we just might have to wait 2 to 3 months..... It really sucks...........

On the other hand, the optimist would think that Apple start a campaign with a teaser making people interested in this Mac thing - and then a week later SMACK, the new revolutionary Macbook presented in prime time......

so here's what has me wondering.
i had my g4 1.2ghz ibook sent in for repair on the 20th. not a peep from apple on the status thus far. was told "takes one working week". it's been almost 2.

go to the apple store on the site. there are no ibooks in the refurb section...

is it possible they are going to spring it on everyone?
is it possible im going to get an intel book as a replacement?
dunno... take it as you please.

Could Have Been A Decoy Comment

Could Have Been A Decoy Comment to throw the competition off. :D

Hey guys,

I'm new to the Appleworld but I need a new MacBook and have the patient to wait for the intel-based and I'm checking these sites now a few times every day.
I noticed you're talking whether it would be logical to launge the macboook after the ads of Apple which is actually very logical.

Why not tell the world first what a mac is and then launge a product which could be used by 80% of the market. In this case you can get much more attention of teh market.
Am ir right or what?

Makes plenty of sense, but this is apple we're talking about. ;)

Maybe they will have this big ad campaign and follow it up with the MacBook announcement, alongside a fully touch-screen video iPod. That way they can guarantee media coverage of the latter, hoping they will also cover the former in the same article.

Maybe even launch Airport Express AV and BT Mighty Mouse at the same time, (crosses fingers).

I think if anything its the other way around. Why release a MacBook, which they hope to be a huge seller, when many people still don't trust the Mac brand, or are misinformed about the Mac?
Releasing these adverts first will build brand awareness and brand trust, and keep Apple in the media's spotlight.
Then, they can drop the MacBook on people just when they're interested in Mac. More press coverabe for the 'Book too, because the media will know that these adverts have been seen by a lot of people.

You won't see an 8x Superdrive in any MacBook. If it won't fit in the 15.4" MBP, how would it fit in a 13.3 MB? Sorry, not going to happen unless they've come out with an impossibly small 8x drive.. doubt it.

The new Apple might just go after that sub-$1k market with a Core Solo Combo model

Doesn't seem that way if we look at what Apple has said. If they expected to come in under $1k, I don't think that they would have made that comment. I don't think it's a ruse. I think it is known as managing client expectations. I just hope they chuck the idea of a Core Solo portable altogether. A sluggish and soon outdated laptop will do nothing to help their brand.

my bet/desperate hope is that they have the ads for a week to get people thinking hm- a mac, well they sound cool- then BAM macbook- then people are thinking hey, not too expensive good consumer laptop...ill buy it.

hopefully

My hope is that they will deliver brand messages consistently on television, in print and on the Internet to support the Mac. Brand building takes time and consistent effort and vigilance.

Simple yet effective marketing strategies like this seem to have away of not getting used.

<paraphrase>Start the ads, build the brand, stoke the flames, and then release the MacBook</paraphrase>

...could be.

But here's the rub. Right now, at the commercial's launch, Apple has a new slogan, and a new page on their website to match. And on that webpage is the question: Which Mac is right for you?

And the cheapest Mac notebook that the page shows me? $2000.

This is crazy. If the ads are effective, potential switchers will be looking at these pages and not see any consumer level portables. Even if the MacBooks come out next week, that's a week of confused shoppers deciding they can't afford a Mac.

Doesn't make sense, because most of us seem to think that there's no good reason why there couldn't be a MacBook right now. In fact, one rumor awhile back said they were ready to manufacture, but were waiting for the green light from marketing.

So either they come out really soon with their own commercials, or Apple is waiting for the Core Duo price drops due at the end of the month.
