I strongly doubt it. However, I really don't think Meroms will go into the consumer MacBooks until much later to help differentiate between the consumer and Pro models.

Why do some people think that Apple are in competition with THEMSELVES?? For instance, say I have £750 to spend on a notebook. I want the best specs, performance and latest technology for my money. I see a Windows laptop WITH Core 2 Duo, whereas the Macbook still has the Yonah (to differentiate between the Macbook Pro ofcourse...) Now, I go for the better specs and Apple loses a new customer...

The Macbook and the Pro version seem differentiated enough to me, without having to use the Yonah in one and Merom in another to achieve this.

Im ready to make the switch, so Apple, bring on the Merom baby....

P.S When is thanksgiving??

Thanksgiving is Thursday November 23, 2006 - Three Months From Wednesday. The next day is knownas "Black Friday" when all the stops are pulled out in amazing sales beginnig about 4AM. The Queue begins about 6PM the previous evening.

I agree with you that the MacBook and MacBook Pro are completely different without needing a processor difference other than speed of course. I really don't understand those who think they do. Proof came when iBooks finally went G4 and barely impacted PowerBook G4 sales at all as far as I know. What really miffs me is how someone can look at both models and think they are very similar.  When I look at them they look to me like the difference between night and day.

do you guys think Jobs not doing a keynote in paris says anything about the mbp's? like maybe someone else will introduce it or it will now more likely be a silent tuesday?

Thanks for the info Multimedia.

Bit of a query though; I just read the AnandTech review of the Core 2 Duo (vs Core Duo (Yonah), and well, it wasnt that much better. Sure, the extra 10% performance gains across the board would be nice, but I dont think that would be noticeable for my everyday Mac usage.

Im on the Jade Plan anyway, and intend to buy a new consumer Mac laptop each year, keeping up to date with specs, full AppleCare and a new model for what is essentially little cost. I just saw an iBook go for £450 on eBay with the stock 40GB HD. Mine is the same model but with 80GB... so if I was to get £450+ I would be thrilled as I can pick up a MacBook for just £200 extra, far better specs and of course another years worth of AppleCare.

So to sum up, I wont be too disappointed if they update to Merom shortly after I pick up a MacBook. The 64bit aspect wont hurt me within the next 12 months when I plan on upgrading again.

Macbook pro 1.83/512mb 1700€ in apple store

ok, i am sorry if i am a little bit off of topic but what do you think about that?????

Portugal apple store is selling this and i think its a very very good deal.
200€ more than black macbook and you have 15''screen and a x1600 grafic card

i need a computer for cad............what do you think?and maybe with merom comming soon they get even cheaper to clean the stock.......

I believe Merom will be in Macbook soon

Actually I almost literally bet on that...I sold my laptop 3 months ago with a view to buying a Macbook. I am holding off for a few more weeks to have Merom in it but I cannot wait too much though (beginning of October is my deadline).

To say more, I have been using PC/Windows for...so long. No Mac whatsoever. I want now to make the switch for all the computers in the house and the first in line is a Macbook for work purposes.

Why I would like to have Merom? Because I believe it will allow me to use the laptop with OS/software upgrades for another 3-4 yrs. I am not changing computers that often.

Now, everybody else that matter in the computer world (Dell, SONY & others) will certainly jump on the Core 2 Duo wagon. Since now you can compare Apple with apples...because of the Intel chips...people like me will make the comparison. I see no point really - marketing and technology-wise - in keeping the Macbooks with an outdated processor when there is a better one available and in use by the competion.

On a larger picture, I believe that Apple has set higher strategic goals for itself than in the past, meaning to go for Sony's or Dell's marketshare, so they are in direct competition right now.

Not necessarily. Tuesday always used to be "the day", but recently Apple has take to releasing things on Wednesday as well. It's really anyone's guess. ;)

well I still have my fingers crossed for tomorrow! Its the perfect day, 1, its a tuesday, and 2, Im going off to college so its likely to be released a day when im frantically moving into my dorm, so w/ my luck it will hapen tomorrow! (which would make me very happy!)

I'm hoping it's sooner rather than later as well. My wife is very eager to buy a new MacBook and I've been telling her to hold off for just a couple more weeks. :)

this waiting game is killing me. i leave for school on the 2nd (im a freshman in college) and i've been waiting for merom all summer. every day i come closer to leaving for school, i contemplate just souping up a blackbook to the max, and hopefully remaining content with that. but then i think "if its just gonna be outdated in one or two months, why waste the money on soon-to-be outdated technology?"

ive also found myself wondering if the extra processing speed is gonna matter for what i use my computer for. at most ill probably do some presentations, a lot of music downloading, maybe some movie editing, watching movies, photoshopping, word processingm etc. will merom make a difference? (een though i would like to run leopard the way it was meant to run, it wouldnt kill me not to have it at all/ run it on 32 bit...)

I really hope we see MBP with Merom processors this or next week, I'm going to NYC the first days of september and I want to buy one.

It's going to be very difficult for me not to buy the actual 17" MBP if the new one doesn't arrive early, I don't live in the US, so I would not be able to get out of my house the day they release the computers and get one.

If the new MBP have easily removable HD, I will be in line (probably online :) )to buy a new 120GB drive for CHEAP.

update macbook 1.1 to 64 bit

Does anyone have any idea if the first generation macbooks will be upgradeable/compatible with the new processors? i'm not in any big hurry, but would like to be able to upgrade to 64 bit (w/out buying a new machine if possible) when the time comes....
Thanx!

IIRC Yonah is pin-compatible with Merom...

ok, so logic board is the same as motherboard right?
so that's probably not gonna work out so well, huh?

No expo?!

Hey, if theres no paris expo keynote, does this mean merom mbp isn't coming out any time soon? ie much later than september 5?

I don't think that's the case. Just because there is no keynote, that doesn't mean no product updates will occur. Furthermore, the upgrade to Merom from Yonah is, for all intents and purposes, not a significant update, so I doubt it would haver been the focus of a keynote in any case.

i agree. so basically whenever Apple gets the processors, you'll probably see an upgrade

Reports of an Apple Special Event at Photokina on 25 September are popping up. Given that the PowerBook G4s got their last spec bump at a photography special event, I hope we don't have to wait that long...

Yeah, I think this is the most likely scenario. To the majority of the public, upgrading to Merom is "just another upgrade", like a processor speed boost or the like. The whole 64-bit thing isn't a big deal to Joe Consumer, and with Intel pumping out these new architectures on a fairly frequent basis, we can't expect Apple to be making a huge deal every time they upgrade their machines accordingly. For major updates, especially to the Mac Pro line, sure, but Yonah to Merom to Penryn - nah, I don't see it happening. Mention will be made of it as an upgrade, but nothing much further IMO.

Do you think there will be any external way to see the difference between a Merom MacBook and an Yonah MacBook?
