Do you think there will be any external way to see the difference between a Merom MacBook and an Yonah MacBook?

Yes, watch the screen move much faster and smoother. Also, the bottom will not be as hot. The diference between Core and Core 2 is like night and day!

:D

After this upgrade to 64-bit, there is going to be Santa Rosa in 2007, and continued significant architectural improvements right on into the future. The bump to the Core 2 Merom isn't going to be the be all and end all, and actually for most of us, I think that Santa Rosa will be far more significant. Since we are so close to Core 2 Apple portables, it is probably now advisable to wait if possible to purchase, but the idea that the Merom is going to afford several years of extended usefulness over a Yonah-base machine is misguided I think unless you will really require 64-bit apps. A loaded Yonah MacBook is a fine machine.

I really can't agree.

Merom heat performance

My understanding is that the merom heat performance (ppw) is infact worse than Yonah so won't we feel more heat and less battery time? :( I think this could actually be a disappointing upgrade for those reasons and anyone waiting on for a real boost should hold on to rev 1 and wait till the next upgade - thoughts?

i agree. so basically whenever Apple gets the processors, you'll probably see an upgrade

Yep. Since merom and yonah are pin compatible, really all Apple has to do is substitute processors on the production line.

While you guys are waiting, I've been enjoy my day 1 iMac 20" and day 1 MacBook for some time now. No regrets here.

That said, now you've got to wait until September 5th or 12th.

I mean like a little "Intel Core 2 Duo" symbol or something.

September the 5th. Look at the main page.
And you think they will be available that same day?

Another question: The MBP upgrade will be only for the processor or we'll see other specs, like larger HD, faster Superdrives? What do you guys think?

Tuesday's usually mean it's announced as an update to the shop.

btw. the rumour is from Appleinsider I think.

We might see better vid and bigger HD. It is indeed anyones guess.

You mean aesthetically? Not unless Apple changes the case design, which I definitely don't see them doing. As a result, this will look like just a simple chip upgrade and nothing more.

Or did you mean "see the difference' as in "see a performance increase"? If so, then yes, there will be a performance boost, but nothing earth-shattering. For the average user, perhaps a few applications will be 1% zippier, but I doubt it wil be anything too noticeable - again, for the average Mac user who primarily uses Mail, Safari, iTunes and the like.

Noted - thanks. Still feel that this is not much of an upgrade in terms of actual performance but I guess this is what we will come to expect for interim processor upgrades the INTEL way that will occur more regularly whereas before we waited ages and then you'd expect to get a big upgrade. However is this not supposed to be an upgrade to a next generation of processor rather than just a speed bump? - seems like it's not such a giant leap in terms of a next gen. Will be interesting to see how apple filter in upgrades to the rest of the machines live drives, graphics, enclosure etc over time if they have loads of little speed jumps.

Dunno but I think I preferred a couple of major upgrades per year rather than frequent little jumps - easier to get your head round and plan purchasing if you are a small business.

i had been hoping that apple would release this in august. but it looks more like the reports are right.

well i wont mind now. cause the first weeks of august are so close.

but i think im ready to order the new model.... :)

I've been hearing a lot of rumors about the Merom (Core 2 Duo) chips being worse than Yonah as far as heat and battery life goes. Does anyone have a link to that source? As far as every review I've read, the battery life is almost exactly the same but with maybe 2 or 3 minutes of extra time.

Now I really don't know what to do. I finally have most of my cash ready to go. I was going to wait until the next upgrade to the MBP or iMac came out before I made my decision. Now it looks as if I could be waiting quite a while. I may still wait for Paris just in case.

AHHH!@#!@#!@#

IS COMING OR NOT?!?!

I weep everyday thinking of the upcoming weeks of dreadful waiting...and there's a chance our merom mbp's won't even be coming soon for us college students. :( :(

IMO, if you need a laptop, just go buy a MBP. Core Duos are not "Stone Age" processors compared to Core 2 Duo. All you are getting is, roughly, a 15% speed boost and relatively same battery life.

64-bit computing for mobile computers is, IMO, overrated.

If I am wrong, feel free to correct me. If you are doing INTENSE calculations, you probably should buy a more intense machine. Mobile computers are meant to be...mobile.

It looks like there's a possibility that we may have to wait even more.
http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1983

The merom Macbook Pro is the first mac I've bought in 5 years, and the wait has been killing me. Not that I've been waiting 5 years for the merom, but since I decided to buy a MBP back in June, I discovered this whole merom 64-bit chip coming down the pipe. I so want it last Tuesday. Waiting longer is giving me an ulcer.

I have to agree with that thread above, i mean i dunno...i am thinking about just saying screw it and buy a MBP. i am going to NYC this weekend and i might just pick one up there. i dunno...i havent decided yet but i am sick of waiting...merom is merom..o well...

If there should be any waiting done, it should be for Santa Rosa. It will have many more significant upgrades FROM Merom rather than Yonah to Merom.

If you need one, buy one. The difference is not light years. Just a speed bump with 64-bit capability. The average user doesn't have high demand for 64-bit applications.
