very true...i mean its not NEEDED right now, i am just not a person that likes to wait...

Me either ;)

I'd say the majority of users don't know anything about upcoming chips or anything of the sort. Many of us on macrumors and other sites have sort of a one-up just by being aware and it helps if you are the type willing to wait for the latest and greatest.

I just pulled off the deal of the century!

I managed to get £480 for my iBook on eBay. Considering it cost me £640 a year ago, and the Intel transition that is astounding.

So anyway, I just placed my order for a MacBook on the Apple education store. Its £640 there.

Then as I was about to check out, I see that they have a promotion on - buy a Mac and get £100 mail in rebate on iPods. So I quickly realised I could buy a Nano then sell it and probably make myself £80 in the process, giving me an actual outlay of just £560 in real terms for getting the MacBook. Taking into consideration the £480 I have received for the iBook, thats a grand spend of £80 to upgrade from an iBook to a MacBook PLUS I get a years more of AppleCare.

/dies

The deal was so good, I decided to upgrade the HD to 80gb and buy 2gigs of RAM on eBay for just £80.

So to summarise.
Had an iBook 1.33ghz G4, 512mb RAM. Will soon have
Will have MacBook 1.83Ghz Core Duo, 2Gb ram, 80gig hd

Total outlay for a pretty smoking upgrade from year old machine to brand new - £200.

If there should be any waiting done, it should be for Santa Rosa. It will have many more significant upgrades FROM Merom rather than Yonah to Merom.

If you need one, buy one. The difference is not light years. Just a speed bump with 64-bit capability. The average user doesn't have high demand for 64-bit applications.

It appears that Merom will be an evolutionary, not revolutionary, advance for MBP, much less than initial reports indicated in early 2006 reports. This makes me wonder how much difference Santa Rosa will make in early 2007? Is the difference only a faster FSB? If so, wouldn't we expect any speed advantages to be relatively small? (I don't know - I'm asking for help here!) Will the hype about Santa Rosa fizzle next spring when it arrives, much as has happened for Merom?

I'm waiting for a Merom MBP, but not only for the Merom vs. Yonah advantage - I won't buy a 15" MBP until it regains DL burning, and 8x DVD burning, as prior PowerBooks had. (And no, I don't care if I could buy this in a 17" MBP - too big for my portability needs!)

So for me, unless someone has compelling reasons to wait for revolutionary gains with Santa Rosa, I'm hoping that a Merom MBP fits my needs. I don't NEED the upgrade now, but I WANT it!

My TiBook 667 is near logic-board failure and I can't go without a laptop when school starts. I'm hoping that they put out a Macbook Pro quick with Merom so that I can hurry up and get rid of it. I don't know if I can hold out for Merom, I can't go without a laptop when school is right about to start. I might have to just buy a Macbook Pro with Yonah so I can just get on with my life.

.. And while they're waiting everyone else is enjoying their new MacBooks... :p ;)

Waiting can be annoying. But soon, I will be enjoying my brand new MBP as well... as soon as the merom models ship. :)

Noted - thanks. Still feel that this is not much of an upgrade in terms of actual performance but I guess this is what we will come to expect for interim processor upgrades the INTEL way that will occur more regularly whereas before we waited ages and then you'd expect to get a big upgrade. However is this not supposed to be an upgrade to a next generation of processor rather than just a speed bump? - seems like it's not such a giant leap in terms of a next gen.

1. Merom is a full 64 bit processor - major step forward from Yonah.

2. Merom/Conroe/Woodcrest slaughter any P4 processor, and they easily beat the top AMD processors. The only reason why Merom is not such a great step forward from Yonah is that Yonah is already the best chip Intel has ever built (before the Core 2 chips).

Good things come to those who wait...
...a very long time.

funny comment but makes me sick to my stomach...

why do I have a feeling that merom mbp's won't be coming before college starts? if this is true, I'll be banging my head against the wall once for every minute I spend waiting.

I don't see much point in waiting. Get the best you can when want it and don't worry that there's going to be something better in a little while. That's always going to happen. One advantage to buying something that's not spanking brand new is that probably the bad bugs have been worked out and you can google to just about any problem you have.

And the latest isn't really usually all that much greater than the most recent. It may not have the same cache at a party, but you don't spend most of your time at parties talking about your new computer.

Do you?

Yes, you are right, there´s always something new coming, but when is so close as now, it´s very difficult to spend $3,000.00 USD in a computer just to see that a new one has arrive one or two weeks later, no matter if it´s just a speed bump.

Me (I´m not a pro user) and everybody here (Pros or not), we all want the best for our money, and that is always gonna be a new Mac computer, don´t you think?

so I need some professional advice from you all.

I am about to buy a Macbook (white one) and I am probably going to use it for everyday stuff. Get 512 ram (probably upgrade later down the road). But I need some serious advice. Should I wait until after labor day or just go ahead and purchase it now? I want to make sure I get the ipod nano with it so I know that ends on Sept. 15th. Would it be smarter to wait until nearer that time and see if they release some kind of upgrade with it on Sept 1st? I don't know if there will be any overlap.. help please? anyone. thanks so much.

(AFTER DOING SOME READING ON THIS FORUM....please excuse my ignorance about not asking this question...) so if it heated you up. no worries. I'll just wait and see what happens. if I don't NEED it now. I can wait. haha. enough said.

Good point. While a new, [somewhat] faster, 64 bit processor might not add too much for a not-pro user, a new chip might bring with it an easy-to-remove hard drive, more RAM standard, and maybe even a lower price (strech). This last things make waiting for the first thing worth while for me.

Keep it up

I don't think Steve is going to keep us waiting that much longer. For those who have been waiting for a long time, I think the light in the end of the tunnel is already here. As for the Santa Rosa, the Santa Rosa sounds good, but it may only boost performance from a merom by about another 10%, taking in mind that Santa Rosa is just centrino version of merom. Correct me if I'm wrong.

what makes you say that wmmtf?
"the light in the end of the tunnel is already here" <--sounds so inspiring and hopeful...

C'mon

It's just something to inspire those tired of waiting. I, myself am also a mac converter waiting eagerly for the new MBP, if it's not this month, it's the first half of the next, just think about all the pleasure we'll all be able to gain and boast to each other about when we get our hands on a merom mbp. If you're thinking of buying a new laptop, why not wait a couple of weeks?

However, I'd like to add to my last comment, if you're thinking of upgrading from Yonah to Merom, not that there are many of you who do, wait for Santa Rosa, it's got to be sweet to have a Merom Centrino.

And one more, is Penryn going to be a totally new architecture or is it just a quadcore merom??

What to do?

Hi everyone,
I recently graduated from college and it is also my birthday in a couple of days. I did hint to my parents that a MBP would be nice It will be my first mac, I'm a graphic designer but have been using the PC platform so far.

The problem I have is that my parents have bought me a MBP, it should arrive tommorrow. I was, and still am very excitied, but after the excitement settled, I started to think about the possibilty of the 64bit Merom upgrade and possible case redesign coming soon... So, heres the rub.. I would have waited, but my parents have already bought one... If I dont open it can I return it to the Apple store? Will they charge me a restocking fee? Arg. What should/can I do??

Thanks,
B Walsh

please reply

It is going to be near impossible to resist opening the box if it comes at 8am tommorrow...

If I need to keep it sealed you'd better tell me, lol!

That's is the point, and...

... other reasons to wait.

Of course there will always be another faster chip...
Using computers (only using) I have seen great changes, but am still amazed when using my 10 (TEN) year old Toshiba Tecra 78ODVD, (yes DVD drive and camera) using WIN98SE, ha. I can collect e-mails, have plenty of programs installed, and all of them work. No, never had any problem with the screen or hinges!. The harddrive NEVER gave me any problems in TEN years. From the start I used Firewall and Anti Virus software, and rarely had problems, anyhow, none I couldn't solve myself even though I am an amateur:)

Now, with the switch to the INTEL PLATFORM I wait for APPLE to solve all those quality problems, which are numerous. And while I wait there will be a swich to a 64Bit Merom and faster FSB. All of which will give me more value for the money. Why buy a lemon now, when I have a good chance to get a loaded lemon later, haha. :D

Let APPLE get their act together.
:p
