One simlpe reason: Cost.
:(

True, except Merom (64 bit) is suppossed to cost the same as Yonah (32 bit) so do you mean apple wouls raise prices as they have a newer processor?

I dont think they would, having followed this saga for some time i dont think they will raise prices and if the processor, motherboard, logicboard, etc cost the same as Yonah then where does your argument stand?

Now that Apple have acknowledged some technical hardware problems on the Yonah built MBP's and are trying to put these problems right I think that they may well hold of releasing the Merom chip in the MBP's until they are certain of its stability. Some people do say that they released the Yonah MBP's too soon.

I can't believe it. Yet another Tuesday, and still no new iMac or MBP. It really is painful waiting for something we know should have happened a month ago.

Maybe new iMacs next week??? After all, this shortage is on Merom, not Conroe.

Hopefully the iPod sweatshop debarkle will prompt Apple to crack down on its quality control for its next model, although I do believe the quality control now is far better than it was at the beginning of the Macbook / Pro life.

I believe this is my 100th post. "Regular" status 4 me!

You May Return Unopened Macs From Apple For FREE Up To 10 Days After Receipt

Hi everyone,
I recently graduated from college and it is also my birthday in a couple of days. I did hint to my parents that a MBP would be nice It will be my first mac, I'm a graphic designer but have been using the PC platform so far.

The problem I have is that my parents have bought me a MBP, it should arrive tommorrow. I was, and still am very excitied, but after the excitement settled, I started to think about the possibilty of the 64bit Merom upgrade and possible case redesign coming soon... So, heres the rub.. I would have waited, but my parents have already bought one... If I dont open it can I return it to the Apple store? Will they charge me a restocking fee? Arg. What should/can I do??

Thanks,
B Walsh
If you do not open it you may return it at Apple's expense for up to 10 days and not pay any restocking fee. Moreover, you can call Apple and arrange to REFUSE it upon delivery. OR they may ask you to accept it and email you a PDF return label which you print out and will let you return it unopened at Apple's expense as soon as you receive it. If I were you, if you read this before it arrives, I would refuse it then call Apple to tell them you have done so. That would save you the hassle of having to reship back to them.I am 100% sure this is the policy just in case anyone else posts otherwise here. :)

I would definitely return it and wait for the new Merom model which should also be a redesign that will let us easily change HDs like in the MB.

It is going to be near impossible to resist opening the box if it comes at 8am tommorrow...

If I need to keep it sealed you'd better tell me, lol!
I'm telling you not to open the box, phone Apple Sales 800-MY-APPLE and tell them you have changed your mind and want to return it and they will tell you how you can do that AT THEIR EXPENSE. You can even tell them you've decided to wait for Merom and your parents didn't know about waiting. They will understand and give your parents full credit. Won't cost you a dime to return it.

If you open the box it will cost your parents 10% to return it. DO NOT OPEN THAT BOX AND RETURN IT.

You want a MBP that has an impossible to access HD or one that will let you easily change HDs? That's the #1 reason to wait. If the Merom MBP doesn't include a redesign to add that feature, I would wait and buy a Merom MacBook.

The prices will be the same and they are not going to delay putting Merom in MacBooks any longer than they have to wait for supply to match production volume.

To the guy wanting to open the box.

Remember, if Apple gives you crap about a restocking fee or something along those lines, just tell them that you DO NOT AGREE with the software license, and if they try to charge you a restocking fee.......argue.

Remind Apple that you have to have a reasonable time to look at and decide on whether you agree with their license agreement, you don't agree, they can't assess you a penalty.

However, you still probably can't actually use the computer because the big sticker on the documentation says "READ FIRST" before you actually turn on the computer. And if you turn on the computer, you are implicitly agreeing to the terms.
You can avoid all this by NOT OPENING THE BOX. Phone and get it arranged to return unopened. They will not argue with you. Happens all the time. They have to pay for unopened return shipping all the time for people who have changed their minds for any reason whatsoever.

Apple store is showing 3-5 business day wait on already configured MB's, and even longer on BTO's....either its the intel chipset shortage effecting them or an update coming in a week or so. but i still doubt it, prolly a shortage...

thanks!

Wow,
Thanks guys for all the suggestions! Multimedia, thanks for your great reply... I am off to the post office now to see if it is here. You had great suggestions, my specific situation is that my parents had it shipped to them and then my Dad forgot to bring it when I saw him yesterday so he had his office ship it up to me. (we live 400 miles apart) So I cant refuse shipment or anything like that.

Will the apple store do the same thing as calling Apple or should I call them only?

Could Mean Apple's Just-In-Time Processor Shipments Are Switching To Core 2 Duo Now

Well it isn't likely a Yonah shortage since it's been shipping for 8-9 months already. So this may be very good news. Since Apple no doubt uses a Just-In-Time method of receiving processors and probably has a contract that automatically switches supply to the latest greatest ASAP, it Could Mean Apple's Just-In-Time Processor Shipments Are Switching To Core 2 Duo right away - like NOW. :)

Let's all cross our fingers and say a little prayer. :p

Touché. :)

Weel I can imagine a lot of annoyed college students who find out later this Fall that they bought the last of the 32-bit Macs if you're right - which I agree you probably are.

You are correct Multimedia, Apple does indeed use a JIT inventory system. It's the same system that bit them in the ass when the new iMacs were scheduled for release a couple years ago - remember that fiasco? Apple publicly stating on their website that they sold out of G4 iMacs and that customers had to wait for G5 iMacs in the fall? Ah yes, good times... ;)

Appleinsider has a story that states Apple is having difficulties keeping up with demand because of the busy back-to-school season.

It would be fantastic if they were delaying because they wanted to include merom, but I somehow doubt it. No reason. I just doubt it. I would love to be shown otherwise though, because I really want my 17" merom MBP now.

I gotta go with Myke323 on this one. Apple still estimates 24 hour shipping on the MBP, which will certainly get Merom before MB does. Despite my wishes for speedy trasition to Merom, I think Apple is just having supply problems for MB in the back to school rush.

So, I haven't been reading the latest rumors. Is the MBP still due by mid September at latest? Or are we looking at waiting even longer then that?

I reformated my computer and gained like 7GB, so I guess I can wait a little longer, I just WANT it now.

so Multimedia

I guess this means that I'm going to wait until say... Sept 14th. Hopefully by that date I can get the Merom and the iPod nano. in all honesty.... my mouth is salivating. Good idea guys? I need to figure out how to get my hands on some sort of Coupon. I'm a poor medical student with too much in loans. but my dell was getting "ehhh" so I sold it!

Maybe a confirmed date on the Merom!!!

Hi,

Ive recently looked into purchasing a MBP and was looking into the dual booting into XP as im an avid XP user for many years. Although the new macs with intel duo are looking very nice and also as a music producer im looking into purchasing a MBP with Logic Pro 7. Also with the ability to use my beloved XP.

So while browsing about the forums ive noticed that apple are hoping to bump up the MBP to an intel duo 2 codename "merom". Now a bit of luck on my part i have a friend who works for intel!! Havent managed to speak to him about this subject yet as i "normally" dnt have anything to say about intel (Im a AMD FX-60 64-Bit User) But when he comes online or i can catch him on the phone ill ask him as hes involved with the developement of these new duo chips!! See if i can get some inside information!!

Although the real reason while im posting is i rang up a very well known UK based laptop building company which allows you to make your own laptop AMD/Intel. I questioned the man about these new duo chips and apple osx ... and what replied with was a little intresting!! He said along the lines of ...

"Im not sure for definate about the shipping and future plans with these chips but by the sounds of it August the 28th is when its all kicking off as we have a meeting with intel"

Didnt think he meant to have said that as he paused at the end of the call lol!!

Some more info for definate will be posted when i get a chance to chat with my m8!!

So hold tight august 28th!! Ill be ringin the man back to find out the situation!!

Please!! release the Merom MBP by the end of the month!! I sold my 1.67 17" PowerBook today, so I'm ready to spend all my cash!!

I'm going to be in NYC the first 6 days of september, so I hope I'll find it by then.

ahhhhhh, keep dreami'n.......

That wouldn't be to hard to belive, because the 29th is a Tuesday, it's 2 weeks untill Paris and 3 weeks has passed from WWDC. I think it's a perfect day.
