Of Course You Can Repair!!

Hey! I've had my WhiteBook for 10 months, and the plastic splintered on both sides 3 days ago. I made a reservation with the Genius Bar yesterday, and today, I got the topcase without the keyboard replaced free of charge. I still have my warranty plus my Apple Care plan, but they'll still replace it for free even if your warranty has expired.:D I'm planning to get a Moshi Palmwrest so it won't happen again, but if it does, you get an unlimited number of repairs, so no need to worry, guys!

no mac store anywhere near where I am...

I purchased my macbook from Future Shop in Winnipeg (Canada) and when I called apple 3 mos. ago, they said that they wouldn't fix my cracked palm rest. I've noticed several people claiming to have it repaired free of charge... but as I said, I have no store to bring it to. Futureshop will not fix this. What can I do. My macbook (white) isn't barely a year old.

Thanks

The problem I'm having here is that something always comes up when I'm getting ready to head to the Apple Store while visiting the in-laws (baby gets sick or tornadoes get spotted). I'm out of warranty, so I can't even schedule a callback from Apple, and I'm too far from a store to just go to it. I can't even find an e mail for Apple support. If anyone has any ideas how an out-of-warranty, too far away for an Apple store guy can get this taken care of, I'd love to hear it.

honestly it sounds like the only solution in your situation is to visit an apple store. I'd prepare to take a few hours depending on your drive and have them take care of it... the turn around time of spending half a day to have it repaired will be justified in contrast to the time/money it'll take to get replaced if you go another route.

Just noticed the crack on the right side of my palm rest today. Took a closer look on the left side and see an indentation on it. It's ready to crack soon too.

Care to the MacRumors Forum and I didn't think it would be this BIG of a problem for everyone. WOW! I thought mine was a isolated case.

I LOVE this website. Great resource!

Just to note for all to know. This MacBook is babied to the extreme and have the Moshi keyboard/mouse pad cloth and it's placed in the MacBook case in-between uses.

Will take it to the Apple store soon to see if they will take care of it. Luckly I DO have AppleCare.

Follow up:
No need for AppleCare, this is a known issue according to the person at my Apple Store. I sent my MacBook end of the day this past Tuesday and got it back Thursday. No problems.
Perfect!
Thought you guys would like to know that.

Newcastle

I'm having the same problem too, but I live in Newcastle Upon Tyne (UK) and my closest Apple Store is in Glasgow (some 144 Miles away!)

How would Apple handle a case like this?

Hi,

I am living in Sunderland and a friend of mine has taken her macbook to an apple service centre in Newcastle upon Tyne twice already =)

It is somewhere near the Manor Station.

Hope this helps

My Experience

This happened to me a while ago, around mid-January. I just took it out after a day at school and noticed the right-hand edge where my wrist would normally rest had a splinter. It was actually hanging off so much that I could bend it and expose a little sliver of darkness (where the purple elves reside inside).

All I had to do was take it to my local reseller, My Mac Dealer (it's only in Alberta, Canada, as far as I know) and they took one look and told me to come back in half an hour. They replaced the topcase along with the keyboard and trackpad/clicker to boot. It wasn't direct Apple service, but they had to buy all of that stuff from Apple, so that seems to say something about their policy.

Is Apple repairing the top cases free in the UK aswell?

I've put up with the cracking for about a year but its just started spreading again. I take ALOT of care with my products, it annoys me to see it like that.

Thanks

EDIT: just thought I'd look around the laptop and have found by the rear vents, there's a hairline crack running the length of the vents. URGHHH.. can this be repaired too for free?

sweeeeet... just need to plan my trip up to Sheffield now. Which I can see as tricky (got a 10 day video shoot starting tomorrow)

Booked in, taking it down tonight. YES!

UPDATE:

After a little sweet talking, I've managed to get the bottom cased repaired for free too. DING! New keyboard and base for free. I love you Apple(Care)

Heres a thought.

With my Macbook being in for repair, will they put the same style keyboard (2006) on it, or will they use the newer/later design keyboard they used for the white Macbooks?

I miss my Macbook =(

It is very nice to read that Apple is fixing this issue by replacing the palmrest for free. :) That is really very nice of Apple to do that, even though they could easily just as well have insisted that it is a cosmetic problem & charge an amount for the replacement of the palmrest. :) Go Apple Go! :D

I had this happen to both sides of my palmrest last year. I was able to get it replaced on literally the last day of my warranty.

I had hoped that was the last of it. But sure enough, the left side is starting to crack again. It is cracked, but holding on. I can't replace it again because I didn't get AppleCare. So I'm learning to live with it and not pick at it too much. I might get some glue and squeeze it into the crack and hope that holds it for a while longer until I am able to buy myself a nice shiny new Aluminum MacBook.

I had my case replaced today even i was 2/3 weeks out of warranty.

Went in to the store at half 4, made an appointment to see the genius at 6 and had my macbook with new case on back at half 7.

Top quality service!

I never got Applecare for my Macbook, its 2 1/2 years old and I now have a new topcase (and bottom) for free

It's an issue they're fixing for the life of the product and learnt it comes with a 3 month warranty too.

However, after getting my Macbook back, it feels ALOT heavier. Is it me or are they using a thicker grade plastic?

Yep... got mine done for free... I don't have Applecare either. Luckily they had the part in store so they replaced it for me within 20 mins!

Furious...

I've just read through this whole thread and it's made me pretty angry tbh.

Here's some background - a few years back, my Dad decided to replace his ancient 1st Gen iMac and get a black macbook. I'd not been too impressed by the iMac (even when it was brand-new), so was a bit skeptical about him spending so much money on a laptop. When it arrived, I was fairly impressed by the build quality, and Tiger seemed like a decent (but not spectacular) OS. He had a couple of problems initially - the Airport got fried in the first few months, so he called up Apple and got a replacement sent out. The customer service really impressed me.

Autumn 2007, my home-built desktop PC began its death rattle, so I started looking round for a new computer. By this time I wanted simplicity and support, so Apple seemed an obvious choice. Leopard features like Spaces, BootCamp and TimeMachine sealed the deal, and I decided to get a macbook because I was at University and needed a computer I could take to seminars. I settled for a whitebook 2.2 core 2 duo, with AppleCare, and a foam-padded softcase sold via the Apple store.

One morning, about 6months after it arrived, I noticed the palmrest was beginning to splinter. I briefly panicked, but then reassured myself - it was an Apple, with AppleCare: this would not be a problem - I booked an appointment at the Genius bar in Manchester that weekend (just over 40miles away, an expensive train ride, but worth it, I hoped). When I arrived I showed the "genius" the damage, and asked if it could be repaired, and whether it was covered by the AppleCare. He asked a series of questions, making it clear that I must've mistreated my Mac, before agreeing to have it fixed for free "just this once".

At that point I wasn't sure - like I said, I'd used the computer a lot for Uni, so it had been in and out of my bag, on buses and trains a lot, and although I thought I'd been treating it carefully, I knew I hadn't been ultra-cautious with it, and (not knowing it was a fairly common problem) was willing to accept it might be my fault and simply be grateful that it wouldn't cost me any more money to fix. I was told it'd be in overnight, but as it happened they called me while I was on the bus to a friend's house nearby to say it was ready for collection, so I went straight back and picked it up.

Since then I've been as careful as humanly possible - I've used a cloth (as suggested by the "genius") over the keyboard, bought a new hardcase for it, and always closed the lid carefully, holding the top by the iSight lens so as to stop the magnets snapping the lid down. I've taken care not to put too much weight on the palmrest, and generally treated the thing like it's made of very-thin glass.

And yet, last month the palmrest started to splinter again - hairline cracks appeared on both sides around the same time, the right side looking a bit worse than the left. "Just this once" in mind, I taped up both cracks, annoyed at how ugly it looked, and furious at myself - but unsure what else I could've done to avoid it. My Dad's blackbook hasn't had the problem at all, but then, his palmrest feels somehow sturdier than mine.

So today I google 'macbook palmrest' and find myself here, and definitely not alone. It seems opinion here is divided, with some content that Apple have identified the problem and are fixing it when necessary, and others annoyed that the problem exists in the first place. I have to say, I fall into the latter category, and all the more annoyed that my "genius" experience left me blaming myself for a clear design flaw.

So what's the solution? Do I just keep taking it back every time it breaks, until AppleCare expires and they finally say they won't fix it again? By some people's accounts, to only have it break twice in the year and a bit I've had it is pretty good-going. Or can I trade it in somehow for a unibody model? What about if they installed a black keyboard instead? And if the only option is to sell it (once fixed) and buy something else, how much should I be looking to sell it for? I can't really go on using a computer that will repeatedly break, no matter how much I cotton-ball it - I bought an Apple because I didn't want to have to worry about repairs etc, within reason, but I don't think it's very reasonable to have it break every 6-12months when I'm being as careful as possible!

Sorry to rant like this, I'm just very very angry that I've been sold a product with a fundamental design flaw, and then been made to believe that the fault lies with me. Naively, I didn't expect this kind of thing from Apple - I thought the point was that you paid a high premium for excellent design.

I'd much appreciate it if anyone could answer my questions.

It's probably stated somewhere here in this thread that Apple will now replace the top case free of charge due to a manufacturing error with the splintering and cracks in the white Macbook.

EDIT: just thought I'd look around the laptop and have found by the rear vents, there's a hairline crack running the length of the vents. URGHHH.. can this be repaired too for free?

I have that same hairline crack!
Also last week my palmrest cracked and so i'm now holding the piece in place with a bit of sellotape, hope to take it to the Mac Store soon but its over 2 hours away by train (U.K.)
Thing is though I need my macbook everyday for work so it's a real big problem to not have it.

I finally got this taken care of today, and there was no problem at all getting the top case repaired. The guy even mentioned something about the recall only being for the top case, so they would not replace the bottom case which also had a crack in it. If I can get that bottom case replaced I'll be in good shape cosmetically speaking.

Again, absolutely no hassle getting it replaced even though I am nowhere near my original warranty (Aug. 2006). My lesson in all of this, though, is Apple Care is not too much of an expense. With Apple Care this would have been handled long ago since I could have easily mailed it off and had it back within days.

Got my palmrest and keyboard replaced earlier this month!

I had a crack on the edge of the right palm-rest that started as a slow peel before splintering off.

This happened two and a half years ago, shortly after I bought it! I didn't know back then that this was a common problem that was covered with or without warranty, but after I found out that they were replacing it for free, I just had to jump at the chance before it's too late.

The keyboard and surrounding area is brand-new! Looks (and feels) just like it did the day I unpacked it! :D

Next up: Moshi Palmguard so this doesn't happen again!

Mine did the same thing...they replaced it but my macbook was under applecare, I know the white iPhones were doing this too so YMMV
