I would give it a try, Apple seem very good at repairing cracked top/bottom cases even way out of the warranty period....

Good luck........let us know what happens.....

Happened to my precious Olga, geniuses at the Apple Store fixed it for free, even though it was not under warranty

not to worry, it's nothing =]

For the life of me I can't figure out why Apple never used standard rubber rests like every other laptop maker. Instead they opt to use the hard plastic that basically acts like knives cutting into the keyboard cover every time it's closed.

A very simple fix would be for Apple to sell some rubber tabs that can be placed next to the "knives." I tried making some from rubber cabinet door stops, but they are too thick and all attempts to cut them to size resulted in ugly uneven garbage.

here you go

Mine has done the same. Mine is over 2 years old. To be honest I am not really fussed, it still works fine. Apple users seem perfectly okay when there is a fault to go out and buy another accessory to try and prevent it. You would have thought Apple would have sorted it out by now.

My iPhone 3G had a stiff mute switch and after a month it started coming off, and I would have to put it back on. Eventually I ended up losing it. Took it to the store got a new iPhone 3G and had this one for a while and the mute switch is a lot better. So they can improve quality. Being the best selling laptop and such a widespread problem you thought they would have fixed it. The new unibodies look nice, but I see no benefit. My current MacBook works fine.

So That is what my problem was

I have had the same problem for almost 6 months. I finally found out why this is happening

Had the same crack develop on mine the month after my AppleCare was up.

Took it to the Apple Store this past week and got the keyboard replaced within half an hour for free :).

I just noticed a crack on my mid-2007 black-books' palmrest last week, so i took it down to the apple store in Belfast and the guy just took one look at it and filled out the repair work order ... still waiting for them to get the part in so i can get it fitted though.

The guy did say that it was the first time he had heard of it happening to a black macbook before, as he said they're usually made with a slightly tougher coating ... not sure what to make of that statement though, what do you guys think?? is there anyone else who's had this problem with the black macbook??

Also, my applecare's been up for about 8 months, the guy didn't even ask about that.

I really doubt the black MacBook is made any different than the white one. The cracks might be harder to see on the black one or something but I'm sure the manufacturing process is the same weather it be white or black..

Yeah i agree, i also doubt the "the replacement palmrests are made of a tougher plastic now" the new one looked and felt just the same to me.......

Well i thought i was having pretty good luck with mine, until i actually looked and sure enough, i have a crack! I'm thinking about getting an appointment to get it replaced but can they do it quickly or will i have to give up my macbook for a while? It seems like everyone else here got theirs replaced pretty quickly. Mine is very very small though, so idk if be replacing it they would mess something else up, that's my only other hesitation.

I don't know read through this thread, almost everyone who reported this issue had a white macbook.

Then if you feel the two computers side by side the plastic certainly feels different.

My new top case feels different to the old one but am skeptical if it will last (although I know have different issues with it, electric shocks, so don't know if it will last long enough to find out).

Im under the impression this happens to a lot of people. Things you normally wouldnt notice until you see others complaining about it.

Like my new MacBook, I never noticed any slanted keys but after everyone talking about it I looked for it and sure enough i have a few that are BARELY slanted.
If your looking for something youll most likely find it..

I got a crack in mine, but it was like a tiny hairline crack that I got taken care of while having a separate issue, not the full-on breaking off of pieces some people have. Maybe because there are far more whitebooks out there, their cases are more prominent.

How long do the repairs usually take? I see above that it took 1/2 an hour for someone. Anyone else have times?

I've had the cracks for about two months now, but they don't bother me and I don't want to be without my laptop for too long as it's my main computer.

My local Apple service place (an Apple store is a 4 hour drive for me) had the top case in stock for my old whitebook, so they fitted it while i waited, took about 30 mins.......

The crack happened on my white macbook. It was there almost the day I bought the laptop. Didn't think much of it but it got worse over the year and a half I've had the machine. And really it didn't bother me a whole lot but since I heard Apple was replacing the casings even out of warranty I brought my laptop in.

And even 6 months out of warranty the replacing the entire bottom casing, inclduing keyboard and trackpad. They also replaced the logic board at no charge, wondering if they found something else not right once they opened the machine?

Took less than 24 hours to be done, though I did have to leave it there.

And when I picked it up I did have to apply the keyboard firmware as well as other minor changes to my password manager and mail program since I guess the IP address changes on a new logic board.

Mine took 3 days as they didnt have the part, going to pick up today

Slightly off topic but Apple failed to recognize the other problems I had, Faulty LCD (purple line running through it), Massive Overheating problem (70 degrees at running normal things such as Safari), Loose left side (where all ports are located) it goes in around 2-3mm and is starting to crack a little under a screw (I think It may be due to the heat), The hinge is completly loose, If i pick up my laptop like kinda just rise it 5 feet the hinge will close, it has no power in it what so ever, and what really ticks me off is the random power shutdown issue, tried SMC reset and and PRAM but still resets, Im on 10.5.6 and the genius said it was normal and being caused by some software, I formatted the whole hard drive and still I get these problems

Ah well, just a call to Apple CR, I hear their really good

My macbook I bought in the summer of '07 has cracks on the display bezel and large cracks on the palmrest. I'm pretty sure I'm going to drive the hour and a half to the apple store and see if they will repair it.

Do they normally fix the display bezel cracks when out of warranty along with the palmrest cracks?

i had 3 cracks on mine.and just got another one a week or two ago. one right next to the thing on the top bezel that is said to wear down the plastic. one of the left side on the left left of the fn key. One in the bottom right of the palmrest and another one on the bottom left palmrest not far from the other one.

I have head them for a while and hasnt been able to take mine in to our apple store due to school and the fact I cant drive because i havent gotten my license yet. This is my 2nd white MB after a screen problem and got a replacement.. with the first crack happening on this one no later than 6 months abd the rest happening about 3 months apart. =[

I am calling Apple in the morning.

Well, I got it all done on friday past. I took the macbook down to my local apple store, but it took about half an hour to get someone to actually take the laptop off of me. The staff that approached me all tried to make me make a genius bar appointment for sunday, when their next free space was, just to leave it in. I kept telling them that I had been to the genius bar, ordered the part and had the work authorisation request to have it fixed. As I kept getting more infuriated at the lack of listening skills from the staff (most of whom were free, as the store wasn't that busy), eventually one of the guys at the genius bar became free, asked me what i was there for, printed off a copy of the work request, i signed it over to him and was out of the store within 3 minutes of him finishing with his previous customer.

They phoned me later that day to come and pick it up, and I went into the shop, was immediately approached by the guy i know is the duty supervisor, and i had my macbook in my hands and checked within 5 minutes, no hassle.

It is quite petty, I know, but the customer service in the morning combined with no-one taking note of what I was actually saying to them (plus waiting nearly half an hour just to give someone my machine) put me in the foulest mood I've been in for a long time.

Sorry ... rant over ... lol.

PS. I got an e-mail from apple asking me to feedback on my experience in store, I should be expecting a phone call any day now... :D

I've got this same problem on both sides of the palmrest on my 1st gen (Aug 2006 purchase date) white Macbook, and today I noticed a crack on the left hand side going down from the second screw from the front. There are no Apple stores around here, and I'm wondering if I can't just fix it myself.

Fortunately the next laptop for me won't have to be with a plastic casing, though, since we now have the unibodies!
