There are no Apple stores around here, and I'm wondering if I can't just fix it myself.

Not totally sure if that's possible, although anything's possible so prove me wrong!! ... From the receipt I got back at the Apple Store in Belfast, they gave the values for parts and fitting (of course, I didn't pay anything) which added up to about £120, of which I think the part cost was about £65???? I don't have the details with me as I'm in work, but that's roughly the price, convert it into which currency you need and that should be at least a ball park figure

As for the actual fitting, I have no idea how you would go about it ... sorry!

just to clarify will this still be fixed when i am outside the warranty window with applecare?

i had it fixed before when i had apple care, but no longer have it. am i out of luck?
i know i could buy a replacement top case myself but arent they close to $300?

From my understanding this crack issue, along with base cracks are covered by Apple regardless of having AppleCare or not. They realized the issue was based on flaw of design.

Yeah, I looked into it, and it's not going to happen. Too much mucking around for me to be comfortable with it. I think my best bet is waiting until I'm around a store and trying to set up a Genius appt. The computer still runs great; it just looks like hell b/c of the cracks and stuff.

So I'm having a problem here. I need to contact Apple about trying to send this thing back to be checked out and getting the casing replaced, but they don't have e mail support. When I try to send something online they want me to choose a service to be billed for; am I being unreasonable in thinking that's ridiculous?

Thanks for any info!

Sadly i've also fallen victim to this problem, thankfully apple are going to replace the upper casing free of charge even though im out of warranty :D

just wondering, when replacing the upper casing, does this mean the keyboard and trackpad is also replaced?

Chris

Yes. It's all one piece.

I cant believe this tread is still going, I bought a macbook white and realized getting my top cover replaced every 4-6 months would be a huge issue for me so I got it fixed and sold it.

Will be taking my Aug. 2006 MB to get looked at on Thursday. Any words of advice for what to say? I'll probably be headed to the Lenox Store in Atlanta. Anyone have experience there?

Also, I'm hoping it'll be able to be done in-store. I don't like being away from the MB for too long as it is my only internet-connected computer at home!

I just took mine back yesterday

I had a crack in the palm rest and discoloration of the bezel around the display

Both were replaced at no charge (still under warranty)
Not only that, they were nice enough to get it back to me THE SAME DAY.

The Genius's really are great :)

ouch that looks bad, Id try getting that fixed, I wouldnt want that to happen to any of my apple products!

Hey, mine just cracked today! I'm making an appointment for Wednesday. They better replace it.

Mine just cracked on Saturday. I was already taking it in next week to get a previous crack fixed along with a misaligned screen/lid.

I hope they don't mind the extra fixing.

My macbook's almost 3 years old now and also had this crack problem. Didn't realise they'd replace it for free till one of the Genius guys said they'd do it, so gave my mac in and they did it in 40 min whilst I browsed the net at the store, and now my macbook looks new again. :D

Well I finally got mine in today. Was 10 mins late so they had to "fit me in." An hour passes and I ask whats up and it turn out my name was somehow erased.... So he put me back in the system and 10 mins later I was helped. Said it would take about 3 hours so I left and was going to pick it up tomorrow. I was still in the area though so I just went and they bring it back. I sign the papers open it and the crack is still there, they did absolutely nothing. They take it back and 5 mins later is on. Really wasn't worth the hassle but I got a fresh new keyboard and trackpad and it feels nice. :D

I had this problem with my black Macbook a long time ago. Took it to the Apple store and they replaced my keyboard unit. I was told that this was a manufacturing defect.

Mine just developed a crack on the palmrest for the second time. First time was under warranty, so I wasn't worried about it. This time it's not. Seems every 6 months or so it happens to me. This time around there are also 2 cracks right on the 1 inch nubs at the top of the screen bezel too.

Got an appt at the local apple store at 3pm today. My fingers are crossed that I get a nice genius bar guy and they replace both at no charge.

I think it's time for me to step up to the computer I really wanted, but couldn't afford when I bought my macbook, a macbook pro.

You know what, I have a feeling that they might fix this for you despite no AppleCare. I'd let them know that this is a recurring issue and was an issue even when your MB was under AppleCare. If you have the case numbers handy for that repair, take it with you. (You can quickly find it in your Apple Support account). Tell them of how you were assured the first time that the problem was due to a manufacturing fault and would be fixed after a repair.

I quite like the Macbooks for their portability. Its a shame you've been compromising on your choice! Although with the unibody in, I think that nightmares like these are history. Also, Macworld benchmarks have put the 2.4 Ghz MB surprisingly close to the previous generation base MBP (which is what I'm guessing you wanted). So you could look into that in case you've grown used to the portability of the MB.

I'd love a MPB if I could afford one though. The MB is perfect for carrying around but I need something faster for hardcore processing. Desktops are a no-no because I move way too much.

Exactly. Mine is off to repair for the second time and i'll sell it as soon as it comes back.

I put mine in for the second time yesterday. The 'student' that took it off my hands wasn't very clued up to this long running issue. She kept stating that it was outside of the guarantee period. I pulled out my invoice (for 0 Euros) from the first time it was done which was also outside the guarantee period and she looked a little bemused. Should be interesting to see what happens.

If it proves a lot of hassle I too would consider selling it and getting a new model.

Both of my palmrests have cracked. Bought my MB on 12/07. I'm at least two hours from the nearest Apple store, and I can't be bothered to drive there to have them try to weasel out of fixing it due to my being past the one year mark. At any rate, I plan to stick with the laptop for at least four years, so...16 months down, 32 to go.

This is the third time mine has palmrest has cracked. Usually 10 months between each of the cracking incidents. I keep mine spic and span and it still cracks. Hopefully its replaced again. My friend and mine have synced cracking. We are both on our third time and by brother is on his second cracking incident. All the same I love my mac and apples service.

It is a design flaw, no weasling needed. Just take it into Apple, when you have the time.
