it's really hard to tell because the stock isn't listed online and is typically sold out as it gets in. I walked into an Apple Store today and they by chance had a gold one in. that was after 3 attempts + a best buy attempt. Your best bet is just to try the stores and hope you're lucky. If you go to best buy, make sure to check their open box stock.
EDIT: to be clear, i walked into a san francisco store but you can probably assume that the stores in big cities will be similar.
IMO, When people talk about prices, they usually don't talk about the tax or the shipping on it, because it's different rates for different areas... $1299/1599 for the original prices, not $1406/$1730. In New Hampshire/Montana/Oregon, it would be the straight up $1299/1599 because of no tax.
I got mine from the apple store in the Mall of Georgia. At the time it was the only one they had received since launch. They may have more now. It was the 1.2/512 and this was on Thursday 5.14.

Well it's not in-store, but if anyone wants to get a rMB and didn't preorder Best Buy has the base silver model ready for shipping, - I ordered it yesterday and it just shipped today for delivery Tuesday.
Planning for this to tide me over until skylake comes out and I'll order an ultimate space gray.

Does anyone know where I can get the new macbook retina 12 in store? I am leaving the country very soon, thats why I am not getting it online. any thoughts of particular stores that may have in store stock in the UK? thanks guys!

There is stock at Stormfront and KRCS, but the Apple Stores are getting dribs and drabs..
Spoke to the Aberdeen store 3 times this week and nothing.. =[

John Lewis have had stock for the past few weeks. Extra year warranty, too.

Try Curry stores and check if you can collect.
I've just bought today in Guernsey while on a cruise, did well space grey with no vat. Chuffed, as next stop Liverpool and thought I'd get one there. So pleased today paying £1080.00 for the 512mb model.
I saw full stock of all colors and sizes along with three demo units on the floor in Lima, Peru last week at iShop, which is a reseller as all spots here in South America. Base unit was over $2,000 USD so I waited to get back from my trip. Got back home in Medellin, Colombia to find full stock at iShop retailers as it was in Lima. I paid $1,400 for the base model and got an additional $100 to spend in the store which I used and picked up some accessories.
I picked up a base space grey model at the Glasgow Buchanan St on Friday. Guy there told me they got ten in and they were all gone in a day.
I walked into the New Jersey Menlo Park Mall Apple Store today, and picked up a 1.2 GHz Space Gray (512GB). They just got a few in, which included around 2-3 Space Grays, and aside from that the only other model they had were quite a few Gold 1.2GHz models. No 1.1GHz models or silver 1.2GHz.
Dang that's awesome. Im going to tear apart Houston looking for one tomorrow. I hope the reports are true
On Reddit, two Best Buy employees told me that their Best Buys had all models in stock, so if you have no luck at the Apple Store, try Best Buy.
Our local Bestbuy had all three colors in the basic model and the gold unit was also available in the 512GB unit. Seems Bestbuy is on Apples best list for keeping stock.
