Liquid Metal would most likely be cheaper & faster than milling given scalability of molding. Apple has the capital. I'm guessing against it for the upcoming refresh as we have yet to hear anything regarding material supplier & operations change.
This is too big of a change to keep secret. I would speculate they would roll out Liquid Metal in accessories first, then iPods/iPads, then iPhones, then MBP.

I'm sure the molding would eventually be cheaper, but just due to the fact that Apple would have to design and setup the manufacturing process would cost a lot of money. Sure, LM will eventually show up on Macs for a reasonable price, but just not until Apple works out the details. But, I could be wrong, and LM MBPs could be coming in the next couple of weeks :).

dont forget when unibody aluminium macbooks came out, im sure those cost alot of money to design and make too.

I'm hoping for liquidmetal macbooks :D

i will likely be purchasing my first mac, a mbp pro 15". It appears I should wait till March or April when a newer model comes out. I will be getting it with an educational discount. When a new model comes out, are they immediately available with the educational discount or does that come a few weeks after release? Also will this one be the same price as the older model or more expensive?

then again, the reason we haven't seen any leaked pics or info might be BECAUSE its liquid metal. As the sole licensee of liquid metal, Apple would have tighter control over leaks compared to if they were outsourcing.

They outsource everything, so I don't think this is the reason we haven't seen anything.

Apple had already tested the unibody aluminum on the 1st gen MBAs. However, I strongly hope you're right since I will be buying a 2011 pro and would love some LM goodness!

They will be available with the educational discount at the same time they are out at full price. The prices should be the same or close to the same prices as they are now.

what i'm saying is, we see leaks from chinese component makers all the time. we DON'T see leaks from Apple internally. if Apple owns the rights to Liquid Metal outright, chances are we are dealing with leak policies that are enforced as if they were internal Apple information rather than info from third party companies.

All leaks even from the foxconn factory in China are handled very seriously, that is why people have taken their own lives when prototypes have gone missing.

I understand the point you are trying to make, but all this stuff is produced in other companies factories and even if Apple owns the rights to something that doesn't mean it would be any less possible for a leak to happen.

Come on, really.....

I read all the predictions here and I'm getting bored thinking of just some incremental speed bumps, etc.

Doesn't anyone expect anything grand and great to come out with the next iteration of the MBP? Maybe a touch screen? Perhaps it will be able to flip into a tablet and be both an iPad and a MBP? Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps? What about some other neat ergonomic configuration/look?

I personally think a touchscreen would be great, so it would have the app cabability of the iPhone and iPad and then the keyboard of the computer. That way we don't need to haul around 3 devices (maybe just 2)?

Isn't Apple about about innovation? All I read here are people's boring, incremental changes - nothing that is going to be a game changer!

Steve Jobs has already said that they've tested touch screen functions on the Macbook models and it just didn't work because touch screen doesn't work well in "vertical environments".

+1

Most of the firms that you can name don't make things; they buy and sell things. For example, Apple doesn't make the iPod. Toshiba makes the hard drive, the display and other firms make similar and other remaining parts.

My dream MacBook pro is made of Liquid Metal but most people know it's too early for that. :(

Yeah, peoples shoulders would get tired too quick. lol.

touch screens need to be operated with the elbow being tucked in. No arm pain.:D

Even the current glass touchpad on the mbp often makes my wrist painful due to the lack of palm rest (as i don't use any mouse on my macbook pro), let alone the vertical touchscreen.

I actually find the air kind of ugly. I also really dont like the idea that some people have that the MBA is the direction that the MBP line shoudl go in. That doesnt make sense to me. Job's Apple doesnt like to have too much overlap between product lines. That was the first thing he fixed when he came back.
I also use ALL of the ports on my Mac quite often. Not so much the ODD. I'm gettign one of those OWC drivebay deals next paycheck actually.

There would be no overlap as the MBPs couldn't possibly be as thin as MBAs. I actually doubt the MBPs would really look all that much like the MBAs either. The only possible similarities, in my opinion, would be lack of an ODD, and the use of blade SSDs. Seriously, while I personally love the Air design on that kind of thickness, I think that kind of tapering would look atrocious on something as thick as the MBP.

I think a touch screen on a MBP would be a bad idea anyway. Call me old-fashioned if you like, but I find a keyboard and a trackpad much easier to use. I have an iPhone, but I can still do most things faster on my computers.

I hope they don't put a touch screen in the MBP. I'd prefer they improve what's already in the MBP.

Well, it looks like the MBP update won't be this week. The Apple store is still up.
Well it's not expected to happen yet anyway. Next week would be the earliest possible, but unlikely. We would've expected rumours indicating a refresh this week by now if it was going to happen.

Let's hope it is true! And let's hope it'll come out soon. I'm really in need of a laptop as it is required for my college course and I've already delayed buying one for too long.
If the rumor is true though I guess the 13" won't be getting much of an upgrade, though I would be happy with the processor upgrade.

Hurray for first post.
