Check the confirmation email from Apple

1) has anyone who ordered on the 12th had their retina shipped yet?

2) how do you find the time you placed your order?

The email you receive from Apple when you initially placed your order should be dated very soon after you placed the order (like minutes). The subject should read: "Thank you for your order."

2-3 weeks order is now preparing to ship....:):D

I'm on the 3-4 week wagon. Hope mine changes in the next few days. Fingers crossed.

Cars are no where near JIT production, you cannot order a car and get it tomorrow, they are in a slotted schedule where custom priority orders are put into a standard rotation. All cars made at factories are considered sold to the manufacturer before they build it as it is sold to the dealership. The dealers order models and get certain allocations per week/month by model etc.

No so. In fact back in the '80s GM built a custom factory to produce a car called the Saturn using JIT - http://manufacturing.hubspot.com/bid/30938/Driving-Down-Costs-with-Just-in-Time-JIT-Production

Note the last sentence -

and JIT processes were implemented across the GM enterprise, resulting in a overall corporate recovery that continues today.

I've also been round two car factories - Saab and Volvo - and that is how they both are run.

While you are correct that you can't order a car at a dealer today and have it delivered tomorrow you can have a car built with your specific options in a short lead-time.

I did not update the spreadsheet (though you're more than welcome to add my info).

Just in time has been a cornerstone of manufacturing - including cars for decades - but it refers to the manufacturing process not delivery, so they don't keep a load of parts in the factory for example but keep better watch of what they're using so they can order in more to arrive "just in time" before they run out. That way you don't waste cash and space stockpiling parts.

I would have thought that for this kind of product they would do JIT production where they would produce exactly the machines ordered. Just like the motor industry where you can have a blue 3-door 2 litre on the production line followed by a white 5-door 1.6 litre followed by a black ... etc

Plus, if it was run the way you suggest then that implies that they must have combinations for 3-4 weekers that they have no 2-3 weeker orders for and I'm sure I've seen people with 3-4 week shipping who've been shipped when they've ordered the same spec as me - 2.6/16/512 - who's on 2-3 weeks

Apple have been using JIT since the arrival of Tim Cook. I doubt they have changed their methods just for one product. I think the Steve Jobs biography said Apple only have a 2-3 day inventory.

what time did you order? Have the same order... but nothing yet.

Status change @ 2:16pm CDT today (see sig below) :D

On top of that, MacMall in Chicago still has around 10 of the base 2.3/8/256 models sitting in their back for the entire weekend apparently. Since I'm on a tight schedule and need my rMBP before I leave for work at the end of the week, I picked one up just in case I don't get my order on time.

In all confidence, any orders that go out today should be delivered on Wednesday, and by Thursday at the latest.

Seems like we're starting to see a lot of movement across the board, but I think it depends heavily on your config AND where your package is going. So if possible it'd be helpful to post your shipping info with your country.

Well, after two weeks of confusion and miscommunication, Best Buy finally called me and I just picked up my rMBP. I teach for another 6 hours (Summer School) but I can't wait to go home and install all my software! Customer service told me that they're starting to get a steady amount of 4-5 rMBP's every 72 hours. This was at the Costa Mesa location in Orange County.

Ordered the base rmbp with the 16gb memory upgrade at 12pm 12/06 Australian time, and just preparing to ship now. Finally!
