I know there's some posters here who poopoo single core performance and say it's no longer relevant, but how responsive your computer feels in day to day tasks is still affected by single core speed. The 10th gen in the MBP 13 is a true 10th gen 10nm chip while the 45 watt "10th gen" that will likely be used in the next MBP 16 refresh is another Skylake+++ 14nm+++ Intel retread, hence the modest improvements.

Back to the MBP 13 2020, for me, it's definitely more responsive than the loaded 2020 i7/16/1TB MBA that I got initially. Even the SSD speed boost is notable as it's moving files and installing much faster than the MBA did with it's admittedly slow SSD that's roughly comparable to the SSD in my 2013 MBP 13. Although the 2020 MBP 13 10th gen SSD is fast, it's still a bit slower than state of the art NVME drives like the Samsung 970 Evo Plus which do 3500 read/3200 write
Apple quotes about 3000 read and write. Why do you think we are getting Lower?

Probably indexing and FileVault. I'm waiting another day to run it again so indexing can be completely done, but I want to keep FileVault on.

I don’t have quantifications of battery life, speed benchmarks, etc, since I’m still in the process of downloading apps and data to my computer...but initial impression is: WOW. I love it. Keyboard is fantastic, screen is great. Super fast. No complaints whatsoever.

I was initially hesitant upon my order, going for the 13” when the 16” was basically same price if not a bit cheaper, but nope, all hesitation is out the window now. No doubt in my mind it is the right choice for me.

Model: 10th Gen i7 / 32GB RAM / 2TB
10th Gen i5/16GB/1TB
I totally agree with you. I was so pleasantly surprised with the build quality. The display is beautiful, the speakers sound great and robust, the keyboard is awesome, overall performance is snappy and very fast. I could not be happier.

Ok, so I received my "Ultimate" i7 /32GB/2TB yesterday afternoon and didn't get around until unwrapping it until around 8pm. Used for a few hours, sleep, and then again this morning. I am your average email/web browsing user - no heavy editing apps whatsoever.

THE FAN IS DRIVING ME NUTS! It has come on multiple times both last night and this morning, when doing the most basic of tasks.

Are any other i7 owners experiencing this yet?

That aside, the keyboard is awesome.

“Up to”. The larger drives typically get faster speeds because of parallelism.

Give it a day or two. It is probably still indexing your files and photos in the background.

I haven’t heard my fans (10thGen has two fans) come on once. Mine runs quietly and cool.

My i7 is quiet except when installing apps or exporting RAW files. It might be indexing as others have mentioned.

Absolutely, single core performance for most people is still far more important than multicore performance. The jump from 1 core to 2 core was a huge jump in responsiveness but for most light users 2 to 4 cores probably made little to no noticeable change. Only some key workloads really need lots of cores and you'll know if you fall into that bracket. Otherwise it's not a big deal for most.

If it was such a big deal you wouldn't see people recommending the 6 core over the 8 core MacBook Pro 16 but lots do. Same reasons, most won't notice the difference anyway.

been looking for speaker reviews; thank you. Didn’t know if they actually did a nice upgrade to the 2019 models
There's a noticeable difference in speaker quality on the 10th gen vs 8th gen models. The 10 has subwoofers whereas the 8 does not, and it's really obvious when you hear them. I personally think the new Air's speakers sound better than the 2020 8th gen MBP speakers.

This is from a MBA thread that I posted on last week
I've in a search for a much smaller and lighter laptop than the MBP 16 beast for on the road Lightroom editing

I fired up Lightroom Classic v9.2.1 on my MB 12 vs. MBP 16 vs. 2020 MBA i7
50 45MP files from my Z7, Export to JPG 80% quality which includes resizing/sharpening

2019 MBP 16 i9/32/2TB (the beast) 1:48
2020 MBP 13 i7/32/2TB 2:15
2017 MBP 15 i7/16/1TB 3:17
2020 MBA 13 i7/16/1TB 3:47 - a bit slower but not bad
2016 m5 MB 12 7:25 - yes it's time to be replaced...

Ding Ding Ding! We have a winner. Despite the Geekbench scores on the 2020 10th gen not being as fast as I would expect, in real world apps, the 2020 10th gen is definitely quicker than a 2017 mbp 15 so it isn’t a performance slouch at all

Here are my Geekbench scores in Boot Camp for the 10th Gen i5/16/512:
1260 Single Core
4406 Multi Core
Cinebench R20: 1758
Cinebench R20 Single Core: 383
Cinebench MP Ratio: 4.59x

They are very similar to the scores in macOS, so Apple seems to have tuned the drivers for similar performance.

I don't think you would need to get the 4TB to get the full speed. I have the 2TB and it falls short. Maybe filevault eating up performance?

I’m a first time MBP user. On the new 2020 13" MBP I noticed on the keyboard when backlit, that some of the keys in the center are not as brightly illuminated as the rest. It’s a very slight difference, but noticeable. Is this common? Is this how they’re all made?

Is Spotlight indexing?

..and also this one -

Thanks for that - will watch that next work break.

..gonna leave this here..

It must be a pretty small amount of use-cases where both the 13" and the 16" both fit well.
The 13" is actually portable and can be used whilst travelling with minimal effort.
Whilst the 16" (yes it's actually smaller than the 15" back in 2008 or whenever it was - no one cares), is really only usable travelling some of the time and never is that convenient.
My observation is if you want a smaller footprint at home and the office, and need to travel with your computer, and do work that the Air or iPad cannot, the 13" is really the only option.
If you travel less often (and not by air - i.e. you have 2 offices nearby, or clients within a metropolitan area), don't mind the larger size, and prefer more screen real estate whilst in the office or home, then 16" fits the requirements.

Both options are a compromise on a non-portable device however.
I guess these comparison videos are trying to show if the 13" can be good enough for your workload, but then they should just as often compare it to an iMac or Mac Pro.
my 2 cents

That’s why we need that 14 inch. Coming from a 2016 MBP model, Im holding on until the next redesign, simply not worth upgrading yet. More screen, better webcam, and WiFi 6 needed to future proof and invest in something this pricey.

I kinda agree, I miss my 2016 MBP 13” TB, but the keyboard I do not. Ironically My 15” 2017 feels worse. I hate typing on it.

I think the new keyboard alone justifies a cause for upgrade.

I’m not sure 3/4” is making me want an upgrade. I like the 13” form factor and not a big fan of my company 14” Dell latitude.

1080 webcam, wifi 6, all good stuff but again I wouldn’t upgrade for it. Keyboard I would.

Totally agree with you. What I'd like to see even more is a 13" in a smaller sized chassis! That would be awesome

A 16 inch MBP is not a viable alternative for someone who values the mobility and portability of the 13.

You are absolutely right, yet not everybody is choosing a 13" primarily because of the portability, you are able to see that, right?
For some it's just the cheaper alternative (to the bigger MBP).

To handle certain workloads, one would like to spec-up a current 13" -
and then the price actually becomes very close to that of a 16", which is massively discounted all over the place at the moment.
I am exactly in this position right now; the price difference between the 2020 10th gen 13" I'd like and an entry level 16" is negligible (the 16" actually being cheaper), so the decision what to go for is really about the differences which are so eloquently presented in that very video.

I suspect there's more use cases than you'd think - it's just that the high price usually rules out the 16".
Now with the high-tier 13" being quite pricey and the 16" discounted as it is the situation is a bit different.

And, regarding the 16" being "not portable" -
I know for everybody who commutes to work by bike 300 days a year 1.4kg vs. 2 makes a difference, sure,
but for everybody else I don't really think it's such a big deal.
It still fits in a backpack and it's not like you're climbing mountains with it, right?
And you actually get 16" to work with in a form factor like that, which is really quite something.

Sure, if one likes small and light by all means go for a 13",
but people who actually need the machine for work will happily carry a 16" if it gives them what they want.
I used to carry 2-3 times the weight in equipment on a daily basis in my job for 20 years, just sayin'.
