I wouldn't be surprised if the US doesn't sell in-store at all. I'm getting this 'Your order is only eligible for delivery due to Covid blabla' message in the East Coast (community with > 98% vaccinated). In other countries they're more rational so do they allow store pickups.
They definitely allow in store pick ups. I was in the Apple Store that day before yesterday to get in store credit/gift cards for my M1 MacBook Pro and an old iPhone 11 Pro Max and was told that there would definitely be some stock of the new machines, but recommend to wake up early and reserve online for pick up if I wanted to be sure.

It’s 7am here on the real east coast (Canada) and in store pickups are not available for 14”/16” FWIW. I wasn’t awake at 5am to see then but sounds like it wouldn’t have been anyway.

Just worried, they may expect a rush to the store, crows, bad publicity blabla.

I called 2 stores yesterday in the area, was forwarded to their sales persons, and they said they wouldn't have the new in stock until next month. But they probably have no clue.

Would be embarrassing though if Apple as an American company serves other countries first and doesn't sell in-store in the US at all. But wouldn't be surprised.

so weird, i saw pickup availble right at 5:45 on 1 refresh on my phone but hopped on the computer and back to unavaillblle

With the supply shortages, I wouldn’t be surprised if anything pout if the ordinary took place…

Expect the unexpected folks!

I was told the 16 inch wasn't available in store on launch day and then walked in 2 hours later and grabbed one of the many sitting behind the counter lmao

Im eagerly looking at stores in Australia where they have abundant stocks sitting on store shelves available for pick-up (select an Australian postal code on Apple site to explore).

Yet in the US we have to probably have to wait months for one to arrive (my delivery date is 16 Dec although the 1 I want is available in e.g. Melbourne).

We're all in this together.

with the supply chain disruptions in the US, it wouldn't surprise me if the trucks with these macbooks are just pulling up just now.

Someone said Best Buy would have some in stock - but i don’t know how true that is

My apple store is a distance away. If I leave in 30-45 minutes ill arrive by 8 - where I can place an order if available. Otherwise i may be on the highway when orders go live
