But, do those 16:9 displays come with LED backlighting?
If they don't, Apple won't use them.

All the displays that Apple uses can fit a full-size keyboard, so this is not an advantage of the 16:9.

Cheaper? It would be interesting to know the actual price of a 1600*900 13.1" display, because I believe it would cost more than a 1280*800 13.3". Of course a 16 or 18" 1600*900 would cost less than a 1680*1050 or a 1920*1200 15/17" display, but it would have also less pixels (let alone LED BL).

Until manufacturers come up with LED BL 16:9 displays with resolutions up to 1920*1080 on sizes no bigger than 18.x",we would be better served with 16:10 panels.

16:9 panels is the latest PC manufacturers hype, because they still don't know how to differentiate between themselves!

So right now, the only "advantage" of 16:9 displays on notebooks is no "black bars" when watching 16:9 movies.

What I would like to see from Apple (in the meantime) is:
13.x" 1280*800 LED BL glossy (like the MBA display) on the new 13" MB
15.x" 1440*900 LED BL glossy (like the current 15" MBP) on a new 15" MB
15.x" 1680*1050 LED BL matte/glossy (new resolution) on the new 15" MBP
17.x" 1920*1200 LED BL matte/glossy (standard) on the new 17" MBP

I am afraid you missed this post:

16:9 is definitely coming.

Existing Macbook case

Look at the head phone jacks.
It might be some sort of new case but it is not all one piece of metal

Gee, I know there's some compression from the perspective, but even so that looks much thinner than the current MBP! I'll bet this thing is going to look incredible.

I just thought this too...

God.. How depressing.. I guess that's it for high end portable computing from Apple :(

thats what common sense would tell us. Its not like they produce all the casings there going to make, then stuff um with components.
Reminds me of the Twinkies urban legends. :D

Hostess hasn't produced any new Twinkies in two decades -- the ones in the stores now have been sitting in the warehouses for years.

Sorry, but the key hole you indicated would be the shorter tab key, not the caps lock key. So your calculations are incorrect.
So that would mean the display size is less than 16"?

Going off ntrigue's calculations:

The tab key is around 1.1" (can't be bothered to find the exact value), so the bottom casing is 10.75" + 4.4" = 15.15"

15.15" - 1." = 14.15"

√(14.15^2 + (14.15(9/16))^2) = 16.2 (close to 16:9 16")
√(14.15^2 + (14.15(9/16))^2) = 16.7 (? 16:10)

I hope I'm fairly close this time.

16:10 advantages:

16:9 advantages:

At least quote the original post please.

You're comparing a display with another one with a 41% higher resolution. That's not exactly fair.

The bottom casing is 10.75"+5.00" = 15.75"

The current 17" model has a casing width of 15.4". So what we have here could easily be a new 17" model with a very slightly increased bezel.

Of course, this doesn't stop people seeing what they want to see.

EDIT: OK, just read correction above, even so 15.15" is still close to 15.4". I'm not drawing a definite conclusion from that.

My friends, I believe what we need here is to hope for the best case we can hope for. That's what this company's all about.

Now while those ones have been saying that the mini-DVI port is a horrible idea, what they're not saying is how much thinner the laptop will be getting because of this.

Now I pledge to you, my friends, that we will be getting a greater product, my friends, if we all consider the benefits of what this case brings, my friends.

Friends, we will have the best designed laptop in the world. And even though there are other products out there that might have a feature or two over us, my friends, we can take solace in the fact that ours will run longer, my friends, and faster, my friends.

My friends, we, my friends, will, my friends, see what's coming up, my friends, my friends, soon, my friends.

My friends.

PS. My Friends.

:D:D:D;)

Your Presidential debate reference just made me throw up a little bit. I guess it was that dollar value meal I had at lunch.

I don't get everyone's fascination with a 16:9 screen over a 16:10. What will you get out of a wider but shorter screen? less screen space, less pixels?

16:9's only benefit that I can see, is that some movies will fit perfectly. Most summer blockbuster movies aren't even made to fit 16:9, so either way you're gonna end up with black bars.

Sure, it also changes the overall dimensions of the laptop, but is it really any convenience for a laptop to get wider?

I'm not trying to sound condescending to those who want 16:9, i just don't get how it's any better than 16:10. Please enlighten me.

If Apple decides to go 16:9 it will be strictly an economical decision, and there will be hell to pay over the loss of real estate. ;)
