Wow thats wicked fast.

So is the battery life roughly 3-4 hours like most have been saying?

Screen at about 50% brightness, WiFi On, Bluetooth off transfering files over Firewire and surfing etc gets 3:30 to 4.

You know college right? Would you trust you ~$2000 just sitting either in your dorm room with your creepy room mate or sitting in the mail area waiting for anyone to pick it up?

What is the difference between Apple shipping your MBP to your dorm or your parents shipping it to your dorm? Either way, it gets shipped. Plus, if I am not mistaken, the shipping Apple chose to use on the first wave requires a signature for release, which mean
1) you have to sign for it, which means you have it in hand
2) Someone else will have to sign for it, in which case you will know who signed for it
If I am not mistaken, signing for a package is legal taking responsibility for that package, which involves you getting it to the rightful owner. Also, not sure, but I think the laws of mail tampering apply, which I believe is a federal offense.

And, for the record, I did go to collage and stayed in the dorm for 4 years. At our school (UNF), all packages went to the housing office, into a locked room. You had to go there to pick it up, sign for it, and show ID.

Perhaps most people are not silly enough to waste 300 bucks for a paltry 160 megahertz increase. They need more a of a spread between models if they want to charge these prices.

Thats not how it works. Check prices anywhere, like http://www.pricewatch.com, and you will see there is a steep drop between the "top of the line" CPU and the next down. This continues until you hit the platau.

A better example can be seen in the Video card arena. A top of the line NVidia
GeForce 7800 gtx sli is $489, take of the sli and save $60, take of the glx and make it a gl and its only $285. Performance-wise, most reviews show the gtx is only marginally faster than the gt, but there is a $204 difference between the two. Eventually the "platau" occurs around the 6600's at about $100. Keep in mind, these numbers shift. The 6800's were $400+ only a year ago.

It costs money to stay on the "bleeding edge".

Hey ArCady... Stop working on your Stargate website (literally) focus on your career and maybe 300 bones wont break you.

Give me 17" of Doom!

Okay... I'm not going to be happy until there is a 17" Mac Book Pro. So... I would also be happy with a 20 Mac Book Pro. Because it would just be insane and Targus and other such companies would make a fortune making bags to carry them that reduce strain on your lumbar. 😀 Anyway... I would like to see a 17" with an X1800 in it with 256 MB VRAM or even 512... That would be insanely good. We'll see.

Intel Core Duo soldered to the Mainboard...... so much for upgrading

2.26 ghz is as fast as core duo is going to be....and I'm sure Merom or whatever apple uses next will have a different socket type anyway. thats pretty standard for intel.

Intel has already announced that Merom would use the same number of pins and socket design but that it would be incompatible with the core duo circuitry.

So I agree that a soldered socket is the least significant downside of a MBP.

Personally I would be most concerned with 1st gen. hardware bugs, 1st gen. OS bugs, 1st gen. universal binary app bugs, lack of native software, poorer battery life, no FW800, and lower-res screen.😱

Dont get too excited. My 2.0 is sitting on a dock in China since Tuesday (shipped Feb 22 from china, which was tuesday here). Aparently the boys in customs there wanted to play with mine before I did.

How many 1.83's have shipped already with an estimated ship date of the 28th? I ordered the 19th of Junuary. I'm really starting to think it will ship the 28th like projected. Also how long has it taken for your mbp's to arrive with normal free shipping?

-snip- Right now I'm doing the battery calibration and I'm at 4:49 on batteries... five minutes ago I got the warning... All power setting were left at the default for batteries...
For two hours I was doing heavy database work over airport. Followed by burning some CDs. Then about an hour and a half of email and manual writing/editing. Then an hour web surfing while iTunes was running in the background. My computer screen never slept for more than ten to fifteen minutes. I've got 7 minutes left showing so I am going to quit all apps and let it take a sleep for the night and then recharge in the morning.

I unplugged at 8PM and it is now 12:49AM. More than four hours on batteries doing actual work... I'm happy!

Follow up,
My MBP went into deep sleep within a few minutes of posting the above, I closed the lid and let it be for the night (still running/sleeping).
This morning I plugged in the power and then opened it up, there was a "ghost" image of my desktop with a small progress bar near the bottom, it took about 10 seconds to fill up then my desktop came to full brightness and my MBP completely woke up like nothing happened. Once the time reset (for about 45 seconds the time was frozen at 12:54am) everything worked just fine. The charging time is at about one and a half hours.

1.83 shipping now

I ordered my 1.83 on Jan. 19th as well in the evening. I recieved confirmation and tracking numbers this morning
Feb 23, 2006 2:21 PM

Left origin
SHANGHAI CN 2:21 PM
Picked up
SHANGHAI CN 2:08 PM
Package received after FedEx cutoff

Package data transmitted to FedEx 8:59 AM

Hopefully on the way (not getting stuck in customs like others....that sucks)

Was it done for design, or to keep people from upgrading after market. Apple (and the fanbois) will claim the former, of course. 😉

Definitely seems like the latter to me.

Seems like you don't understand supply and demand. Supplies of the 2.16 are the most constrained. There's no point in making the upgrade cheaper since if the demand is higher, they won't have enough chips to actually ship. The worst thing that could happen would be making the upgrade cheap and having 90% of buyers opt for it.

And it's totally worth it if it makes you more productive. If you're paying an employee $X per hour, if the upgrade lets them do their job Y% faster, the upgrade will pay for itself in Z amount of time. Time is money, after all.

OK enough of the battery already...

How does it perfom with real applications?!?!

Like iphoto, or Logic 7.2???

How about World of Warcraft performance??? (IF not included)

Anyone one running real benchmarks???!?!

Okay so the 100 GB hard drive spinning @ 7200 in my MBP is a Seagate Momentus ST910021AS, sorry about that everyone. My (really) bad🙁

Well, there goes the "It has a removable CPU" theory. That sucks.

i think it was obvious from the start - you're never going to get a socket based processor in a case that thin. not going to happen. nuff said.

Really? So are there any other Duo laptops with soldered CPU's? Or are they all socket?
