Actually, everything I read seems to suggest that Merom will be the same pin configuration. Link to AnandTech article here: http://http://www.anandtech.com/mac/showdoc.aspx?i=2685&p=1

Wrong.

Intel announced that the Merom cpu would have the same pin configuration but would be incompatible with the Yonah core duo socket circuitry. I wasn't clear if it was due to different voltages or just using the pins differently.

What is the difference between Apple shipping your MBP to your dorm or your parents shipping it to your dorm? Either way, it gets shipped. Plus, if I am not mistaken, the shipping Apple chose to use on the first wave requires a signature for release, which mean
1) you have to sign for it, which means you have it in hand
2) Someone else will have to sign for it, in which case you will know who signed for it
If I am not mistaken, signing for a package is legal taking responsibility for that package, which involves you getting it to the rightful owner. Also, not sure, but I think the laws of mail tampering apply, which I believe is a federal offense.

And, for the record, I did go to collage and stayed in the dorm for 4 years. At our school (UNF), all packages went to the housing office, into a locked room. You had to go there to pick it up, sign for it, and show ID.

That sounds about right

Follow up,
My MBP went into deep sleep within a few minutes of posting the above, I closed the lid and let it be for the night (still running/sleeping).
This morning I plugged in the power and then opened it up, there was a "ghost" image of my desktop with a small progress bar near the bottom, it took about 10 seconds to fill up then my desktop came to full brightness and my MBP completely woke up like nothing happened. Once the time reset (for about 45 seconds the time was frozen at 12:54am) everything worked just fine. The charging time is at about one and a half hours.

What you were seeing was the save sleep feature, at some point your computer was without power and lost its RAM content, it then had the reload the RAM content from the harddrive.

Apple really needs to partner with VMware

Apple needs to work with VMware to get it to run natively on OS X. VMware would blow Microsoft's VPC out of the water.

hey u rite!!!!!!!!1 mine has not uodates anything yet.

do u know how to check this or whcih site to use other than apple site to check the progres.. please let m e know. thnx😕 😕 😕

The apple site give you a tracking number and tells you what carrier. Should be FedEx. Take the tracking number, goto FedEx.com, plug it in. This does NOT tell you if its stalled in customs, however. To find that out, call 1-800-GO-FEDEX. Do not fillow the prompt for tracking, as it tells you the same BS the site does, but instead say "Customer Service". Eventually you will speak to a human, who can look up your tracking number and tell you more info.

I just wonder if the sudden flood of MBPs set off some alarms at customs in Shanghai, and now everyone's order is being delayed there. Good luck, because as I see it, mine will not be here by the promissed time on Monday @ 10:00am, there just doesn't seem like enough time.

Comparison at Apple Store

Went to the Apple Store yesterday, & noticed:

The Macbook display was SO MUCH BRIGHTER it made the G4 1.67 15" next to it, & all other Power- & iBooks look like they were sleeping!!! ( I turned them all up to full brightness.) It was bright like a stand-alone LCD display! (I didn't think the last brightness jump was even noticable.) And I think the resolution is perfect for general readibility.

They were running WAY,WAY HOTTER than the Powerbooks, just running a screensaver or static webpage -- fry an egg, anyone?

I was always bothered by the slight thickness increase from the magical TiBook, & was sure that the new thinning would make a return to spectacular (like the 17"), but it was virtually unnoticable.

The rubberized grip is cheesey.

oh intel...what have you done to the inside of our beautiful macs?

I don't know why, but it bothers me as well. That being said, I think the guts of the MBP look tidy compared to the iMac.

I must have a psychological problem--low latent inhibition?

Front Side Bus Upgrade

I was curious when the MBP came out with the "4x faster" tag, because isn't the increase in FSB speed 4x? My PB is stuck with the 167 MHz FSB and a G4, and the MBP has a 4x faster FSB at 667 MHz.

Clearly I don't understand the inner-workings as well as some of the engineers in these forums, but I don't mind admitting that I'm confused.

Imagine using a dual 2GHz G5 desktop ... only it's your laptop ...

This is the first time in a long time that Apple has delivered a laptop that was anywhere near the speed of it's top of the line Desktops.

Now all I need to do is order the latest upgrade for Cinema4D so I can try out the intel native version .... mmmmmm.

At the end of the day, if you were waiting on a new Mac purchase now may be the time. Until a couple of key apps are out (Photoshop, etc.) there may be a need to stick to PowerPC, but that is about it.

This thing is fast. Really fast. And the features are just amazing. I am 110% satisfied with my purchase. I am hard pressed to find anything but nit-picky problems. Kudos Apple. This is a BIGGER product announcement to someone like me than the G5 was.

Edit: In case anybody asks, I had it shipped to Oregon (home) instead of Washington (college) cause I didn't feel like paying an extra few hundred $$ tax. They tax you depending on your shipping address, not the payment address. (yes, i called apple and confirmed this, in case anybody tries to argue).

I disagree 😛

MacWorld just had a speed test on the new Cinema4D native intel app. I guess it was the best performing universal binary app they tested, making full use of the core duo cpu.

The MBP tested at 3.3x the speed of the G4 1.67 PB. Other apps tested on the MBP ranged 1.1x to 1.6x the speed of the G4 PB.

On the negative side the rosetta PPC native Photoshop app was much slower than the PB. The MBP ran CS2 at .6x of the PB speed.

Here is the link if you are interested.

****Dysfunctional Macbook Display****

Well it looks like twice unlucky...

Rev A Powerbook (White Spot display owner) sign me up!

Rev A Macbook Pro (Similar, but linear display dysfunction) 😱

Supposedly I was the first (well that's what they say to everyone) Macbook owner to have a return. I'll try and post some photo's. Hopefully, this is a rare case!!!

I guess that's what I get for being an early adopter...

PS I'm looking for EyeTv 2.0 (dmg) not 2.1. Anyone have it?

Can you explain this? How would it "blow VPC out of the water"?

I use both VMware (ESX/GSX/Wrkstn/Server/Player) and MS (Virtual Server/Virtual PC) and don't see that much difference betweeen them - aside from ESX's datacenter migration features and shared FibreChannel storage support.

But somehow, I doubt that you're considering a VMware version that has a purchase price of $4000 and a service contract of $1300/year.

It needs to be said again. Have you ever seen the inside of the last generation of G4 powerbook? Looks pretty much the same. Just as intel iMac looks the same inside as the last G5 iMac.

Sure it's a mess. But blame Apple, not Intel.

1.83 is in the country

Fedex is reporting that my MBP 1.83ghz made it to Alaska this morning. For those of you that got the 2.0's shipped to the midwest, how long did that take?

What kind of Super Drive does the MBP use?

Is it 12.7mm like the old one? Can we buy an aftermarket DL SD and replace the old one?
