I honestly think this is Apple spreading sketchy and false rumors around over the weekend. To get people excited.. to get people talk about… to get people hyped up. It is all Apple that is behind it. It’s pure marketing without paying a single dime for advertisement.
I fully agree with you on this. It’s also ’s way of distraction of any news buildup for Google pixel and Samsungs announcement on Wednesday next week.

As Steve Jobs once said about using a stylus..."who wants a stylus?!"

The same can be said about a notch.

Who wants a notch?!

Um Steve was right. Since the 6TH year of Android, no Android phone EVER shipped with a “stylus”.

pencil, pen yes.

the pen uses capacitive multi touch to allow for various pressure sensitivities (or in the pen itself), and tilt recognition.

stylus was just point and click! On a transitive layer over the glass screen - think Palm pda days or early windows pocket pc devices. Everyone hated stylus’ even those that bought several phones having them. They where useless and terrible.

pen, pencil ok. Stylus nadda.

I like how yesterday everyone was like "this is the worst idea ever and it will never happen!" and now that there's another rumor everyone's like "huh yeah I guess that kinda makes sense and could be pretty good. #TeamNotch!" 😅
Everyone? I still don't think it'll happen, but it never was the worst idea ever. I miss being a part of everyone.

If you believe this rumor, the same person claims it's just a low-resolution 2MP camera. That's it. We're adding a notch...for a 2MP camera with no Face ID capabilities.
They probably mean 12MP camera. Also Face ID might come in version 2.0 for the 14inch version while the 16inch version get its. Makes sense and that is how Apple operates, just look at the release of the M1 IPad Pro this year.

Even then, you’d think the quality gets better as tech gets better but nope - they’ve been like this for a decade.

Because the phones that are sneaked through the factory back door or garbage bags are tiny feature phones. The cameras haven’t gotten better. They are still 0.3MP or even QVGA (320 × 240) just like they were a decade ago. They’re just much cheaper now.

ITS FU…ING HORRIBLE!

THE EYE WANTS SYMETRY AND WE STARE AT SCREENS ALL THE TIME!

ITS A COMPANY WHERE DESIGN AND BEAUTY MATTERS!! And now this would me the ugliest display on a laptop ever!…. Its Apple!!!!

I’ve never understood the hate for the notch. It’s purposeful, and uses space that would otherwise be wasted. On my iPhone, I get Face ID along with other sensors, and I also love how the time, cellular signal, WiFi and battery signal are tucked away on either side. If there were no notch all of that information would be pushed downward forcing the things like webpages to push the url bar down into the screen.

I have zero issues with a MacBook Pro or any device having a notch when it’s purposeful. I think some people forgot how hard it is to create new or advanced technology.

Already waiting in line for release... 😂

In all seriousness though, if this happens... massive LUL. I've said for a while MacBooks and iPads are going to merge with a hybrid OS and this would be the next big step. They're moving macOS closer and closer to iOS with each iteration.

Makes a ton of sense. You're all starting to convince me this is real.
Here’s a less serious—but perhaps the most convincing of all—reason to think the notch is coming: So far these laptops have sounded too good to be true. Amazing performance, the ports coming back, cool new display tech; it all sounds too good to be true! There’s always something to gripe about in these situations, but it hasn’t been clear what that reason would be for the new MBPs. However, if the screen had a notch? It would give folks something to harp on, like the chin on the new iMacs. (And I’m not saying it would be unwarranted: It’s a bold aesthetic choice, and some people will understandably not like it.) You can already see the headlines next week about how the new MacBooks seem great, “except for one controversial design choice.”

Seems crazy, but I guess it makes sense from a certain point of view.
The new MacBook Pro will need to amaze people to justify its high price. These days you don’t amaze with just specs. You amaze with external features.
How many actual MBP users push their machines to the extreme? 20% of users? 30%? For the rest, including myself, it’s a slick looking everyday-use device for mundane tasks, but also a status symbol.
Something like a completely edge to edge display would be a great show-off feature, and I’m sure the notch would be implemented in a non-obtrusive way.
But let’s wait and see.

This is a lot of assuming, being presented as fact.

Is it really though? The person who I was replying to was the one assuming the notch is there for marketing purposes and presented that as fact. There is more evidence to suggest the opposite which is what I was pointing out.

Why do you think they shrunk the notch this year? Because it finally became possible to do so. If the notch was so great and Apple wanted it there they would feel no need to shrink it at all. Apple themselves stated during the keynote (and even states on their website) that the smaller notch allows you to have more space. Also, have you not seen the hole punch rumours at all? Yes, they want to minimise any interruptions of the display as much as possible.

And once it becomes technically possible to implement the sensors under the display they are going to do that too and proudly ‘market’ it that way.

ill take a notch for face id on my mac.
Not sure why Apple cannot give the MBP the same treatment as iPP. The bezels on the tablet are thin enough to incorporate FaceID without a notch. Plus notch without FaceID seems like a future upgrade. I don’t mind a notch on a 14 or 16” display as the relatively larger display would overshadow its presence. Imagine if the display sizes is a 14 and 17” instead.

Check out the massive notch on the 2020 MBP display.

There are people who will defend ANYTHING Apple does, no matter how stupid.

And putting a notch on a laptop is one of the most boneheaded design choices any tech company has ever made.

That’s awesome. They probably want to keep the design consistent throughout the generation and plan on adding FaceID into that area next year or the year after. I’m really unbothered by it - items will just wrap around it in the Menu Bar. NBD
