It's been a long time since I have used android. Do they have different gestures swiping down from the left or right of the screen? The notch is useful on iOS. Is it also useful on android?
These are knockoffs - as in fake iPhones. They are junk. Some have more gestures than others, but I wasn't saying these things were any good. I was just saying the fake notch in software idea has been around for years now.

I was thinking about it. They are allegedly removing the MBP branding from the bottom bezel, which is often a way you can spot their products when looking at just a screen on a TV show. If a notch was added, it'd be the new way of easily spotting their product. And we all know how much Apple likes their stuff being easily recognized.

Maybe, but they removed the MBP branding once before (and then brought it back). Obviously I don’t know their reasoning, but it seemed like they didn’t mind missing the branding at the time.

I am looking at my menu bar and I am noticing it is just empty in the middle and always is. Even if a video is being watched, the aspect ratio would make it sit under where the bar would be. I really don't see how a notch would take away real estate. I don't believe this rumor, but I also don't see a potential notch as a problem.

Sure, looks pretty empty to me heh.
Mind you I am using zoomed out resolution. Otherwise the top would be even more cramped and half of the Chrome menu would cut out lots of menubar icons.
Just for the heck of it, this is how it looks like by default.

One minute, you all are defending the notch to the death. The next minute, you all are complaining about it. At least be consistent. The notch has always been trash, and it will always be trash. It doesn't matter what device it is on. I appreciate all of the super fans who have actually admitted this. Good on you!!

this also functions as a minor pain point that we can all expect to spend years / generations paying to slowly reduce back to the goal of a non-notch appearance…

I can’t believe there are people who don’t mind the notch, even going as far as saying they like it and would take it just for some thinner bezels. You people are the reason why we have this notch mess in the first place for complaining about bezels for years.

Bezels melt away into the background when you are focusing on the display. Not once have I owned any phone or laptop and focused on the bezels and said: “Wow! These bezels are so distracting! I can’t be dealing with this!”

Nobody whined about them in the 90s or 2000s either. A notch is way more distracting and is a design catastrophe. They cut into content on the display when I view full screen photos and videos for example. Defending it does not help things and just gives Apple a reason to keep it around.
Well... they don't really cut into the content since it's added on top of the normal resolution. So it's an extra, not taking away from the normal screen size.

Just because you think it is trash, doesn't mean everyone does.

It’s going to stand out so much against a white menubar. It will literally be staring you in the face. Terrible decision. I don’t need 0 bezels. What is the obsession with no bezel?
When you've finally owned a device that is 88-90%+ screen to body ratio, your question will be answered immediately.

Iconic look? If it was possible to hide the sensors under the display they would. They don’t have it built in there just for the sake of it for an “iconic look”. I’ve always found that argument rather strange.

Brand recognizability is important. Nowadays when everybody copies Apple, a more aggressive, unique look goes a long way to differentiate a product. That was also probably one of the main reasons behind the Touch Bar - to give the Mac a feature others couldn’t easily copy. A notch would fulfill a similar purpose, but is much cheaper to implement, and if done right, could even be elegant.

Again, I would happily take an increase in my screen real estate without changing the laptop size if it means the camera module is in my menu bar. What’s the practical problem with this solution?

A close-up view of the alleged notch at the top of the image appears to show a FaceTime camera, microphone, and an ambient light sensor for True Tone. Earlier this week, a Reddit user claimed that the next MacBook Pro will not feature Face ID despite having a notch, with a Touch ID sensor expected to remain above the keyboard for authentication.
It be just like the iPad mini 6, a narrow black band outside the edge to edge display where the camera will be, no notch at all. No bezels.

When tapping to zoom into a photo for example the notch is there and hard to ignore. It eats into the display and blocks the content you are viewing. Watching videos with a fixed wide aspect ratio does the same. Playing games is the same and can block UI elements there.
