As I wrote in the other thread, my first reaction was WTF, but after thinking a little bit, I suppose I will be perfectly fine with a notch. The simple fact is, the current Macs already have a notch: it’s just integrated into the top bezel. Making that bezel available for the menu will give us more real screen estate, which is always welcome. I have no problem with the camera module sitting in the middle of the menu bar, in fact I think it will look cool and give these machines a unique flair.

And in instances when the notch would obscure content (e.g. ridiculously long menus or full screen windows), the top part could be simply blacked out and then it would look just like a regular 16“ display.

Mac OS has a permanent status menu on the top of the screen. It can easily fit between the notch sides, leaving the full 16:10 area below the notch for content. This doesn’t seem terrible to me.

I will be extremely surprised if it does NOT include FaceID !

Otherwise, it's a really stupid design, marketing & strategy decision !

The FaceID sensor would enable Apple to support a much better Depth Effect in Video conferencing, & that's (primarily) why I think it gets included.

Apple is "a P/E chaser" company, first Netflix (65), then Tesla (441, although, nothing announced by Apple here yet), & now Zoom (80).

By comparison, Apple's P/E sits @ 28.

I can’t believe there are people who don’t mind the notch, even going as far as saying they like it and would take it just for some thinner bezels. You people are the reason why we have this notch mess for complaining about bezels for years.

I like the notch on the iPhone. It gives it a great iconic look and I prefer it to stay. Welcome to real world, where people have different tastes.

A notch in the middle of the menu bar isn’t too bad, assuming I have Face ID to make it worth it. Ideally, hole punch camera and Face ID under display.

This low key makes so much sense. Just like with the IPhone it gives Apple a signature look that wont be copied. This reminds me of the the new iPad Pro release. The 12 got the best screen while the 11 was the same screen, fast forward to the new MacBook Pro’s. I can see the 16 version getting Face ID while the 14 doesnt but it gets the Notch. That way for version 2.0 it can get face idea.

I was thinking about it. They are allegedly removing the MBP branding from the bottom bezel, which is often a way you can spot their products when looking at just a screen on a TV show. If a notch was added, it'd be the new way of easily spotting their product. And we all know how much Apple likes their stuff being easily recognized.

Yes, welcome to the real world where thankfully there’s also us people that don’t. It isn’t going to stay around either. They are eventually going to get rid of it.

Iconic look? If it was possible to hide the sensors under the display they would. They don’t have it built in there just for the sake of it for an “iconic look”. I’ve always found that argument rather strange.

That’s a very good point!

They should follow the design language of the new iMac… and be moving away from notch/faceid, keep touch id etc
