they're not mentioning the GPUs because when the MBPs fail to ship on 1st March they are giving everyone an upgrade to the nvidia GeForce Go 7800 GTX and then when they don't ship in April we're all getting a free 20" display ;)

Close...

The real reason is they no longer have displays. Headless MacBook Pro FTW!

Re: Dell Inspiron 9400 With Intel Duo Core Available (specs)
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but my organization submitted an order for my 9400 on 1/25/2006 (through Higher Ed market channel) with estimated ship date of 2/7/2006. After one day, it went to the "production -> build" stage where it has been stuck until today. Today, the order status page said the order had been cancelled and re-entered under a new order number. I'm not sure what the cause of this is, but I see that many of you also experienced this, so I thought I'd post what happened.

It looks like Core-Duo notebook availability issues continue. :-(

So that's Dull Computers availability; something familiar about that process though...

Secondly,

Up with Apple!

Yay!

Taken for a ride? Apple never claimed "by the 15th" it was just the date the orders were given after they were placed.

I want my new machine, but an extra week isnt going to kill me, or anyone else.

Appleinsider is now saying that the MacBook Pro's are now in stores. Does someone know of some additional information on this. I got really excited and called 3 Apple Stores and they as of right now don't have any in stock.

While some PC manufacturers seem to be having problems, I can go to a CompUSA today and buy a Sony with CoreDuo right now. (With 15.4 inch screen, ExpressCard/34 slot, built-in webcam, DVD±RW drive, and all the trimmings.)

So it's not Intel. It must be whatever manufacturer is actually making the things.

2.16Ghz Upgrade (or not...)

After receiving the now famous e-mail from Apple, I called to change my order to the 7200RPM 100GB disk (better in a desktop replacement system), and the 2.16Ghz processor. The sales rep ("Paul") I talked with went away for a few minutes, and then came back and told me my order had been changed, which would result in an approximately 3 week hold on the order, but it would likely be much less. I then asked for confirmation of the final price on the modified configuration. He then told me it would be $100 more than my current (2.0Ghz, 100GB 5400RPM) configuration. I said, "but what about the 2.16Ghz CPU upgrade?". Then he proceeded to tell me that the CPU upgrade is free. He repeated back to me "2.16" several times during the conversation, so I'm left rather incredulous. He didn't strike me as incompetent, or unknowledgable, so I'm left rather puzzled. My order details have not yet been updated on the Apple store "order status" page, so I'll wait until tomorrow to follow up, but I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this kind of confusing behavior.

From anandtech.com's review of iMac G5 vs. iMac Core Duo, 30 Jan 2006:

...

Now that Intel's Core Duo has finally been launched, Apple could go ahead with their PowerPC to x86 transition, but there's another problem. A very smart man at Intel once told me that you should never launch a new microarchitecture alongside a new manufacturing process. With so many variables, things are bound to go wrong, making delays inevitable. With the Core Duo, Intel not only introduced a reasonably sized change in microarchitecture, they also made the shift to 65nm on this semi-new architecture. The end result seems to be that availability of Core Duo processors and chipsets just isn't all that great. In fact, unless you are a Tier 1 OEM or ODM, we're hearing that you aren't getting Core Duo chips until sometime next quarter! That's getting dangerously close to the launch of Conroe and Merom, making Core Duo seem very much like a temporary solution.

...
http://www.anandtech.com/mac/showdoc.aspx?i=2685&p=1

Yes, Dell already shipped some laptops with Core Duo before, now they seem to be idling...

Also, Apple is shipping iMac Core Duo in quantity - less left for MacBook Pros?

I suspect Steve Jobs can't point the finger at Intel THIS early in the relationship especially when he's one of the few Tier 1 OEMs that got enough to load into all those iMacs

Hmm...

An Apple Retail Store employee told me today that they expect to have MBPs in stock at the store on February 28. This is the Woodfield Mall store in Schaumburg, IL.

Another wierd problem: My billing address is in Wisconsin, where there is a 5% sales tax. My shipping address is in Illinois, where there is a 6.25% sales tax. Instead of charging the tax for the billing address, they used the higher shipping address tax for my order. I called them and they are investigating it. This is a difference of almost $25!! In addition to the $25 they knocked off my order already, they might be taking off almost $25 more. Maybe this $50 combined with the processor speed upgrade might make it almost worth the extra 9 day wait.

When I talked to the rep, I asked if he could upgrade my shipping to 2-3 days, so i get it before the weekend. He said that changing it would bump me to the back of the line and it would take even longer. What? Why should I be bumped back for upgrading shipping?

1) Tax calculation is correct. Companies have to collect tax for the State of the SHIPPING address (where the product physically goes) not the BILLING address. If they could use the billing address then we'd all get a PO Box in DE and pay our bills electronically. This is no different than if you bought a Mac at the NY retail Apple Store, but lived in CT (where you billing address is).

2) Upgrading shipping is pointless (and a waste of $). ALL MBPs for the near term are going to ship direct from factory to buyer. That means all MBPs will go express as their obviously is no ground route from China to the US.

A replacement computer (for my much maligned powerbook) was ordered on Feb 6, shipping on Feb28....ie 1.83 ghz core duo macbook pro...Now it's showing a 2.0ghz core duo....BUT it's shipping on 16, March!! I must say that I am a bit disapointed.

Just got a call from Apple Rep, no MacBook Pro's will go out until March.

That is in direct contrast to what others are reporting at other Mac boards. They are saying the 2Ghz are shipping at the end of the week, followed by the 1.83s late next week. Only the 2.16s are delayed until March.

Please can someone point out where on Apple.com that if you buy the 2.16 GH model that it ships in 1-3 days

There is no place. That was the (false) est. given early yesterday AM. It has since been corrected. Apple does not anticipate shippinng the 2.16s until March.

Blah blah. I ordered my e1705 (aka Inspiron 9400) a week ago and got it yesterday. Dont believe everything you read on forums. (except for my posts of course)

Man, is it wicked fast. Whenever Universal binaries are available for all OSX apps (a year or so?) mac users will be happy. In the meantime, I'll enjoy my 2ghz Core Duo that I got for 1700 bucks! Not to mention the GeForce 7800 card too ;)

The apple delivery service is always torturous, which is why I ended up ordering the Imac and selling my new hewlett packard laptop to pay for it, in the end I decided it was easier just to move that round the house with a wireless connection than buying a laptop lol and I dont do any commuting. Had a problem with the wired mouse and keyboard as well (well documented freezing of the mouse and keyboard) and after five calls to different sales staff they eventually sent me a free upgrade to the bluetooth keyboard/mouse (which I was delighted with) so basically I think the sales staff are giving conflicting delivery times to people. Since they have upgraded everyone free on the laptops though I think i'd bite my tongue and just wait it out but my sympathies are with all those waiting nothing worse than waiting for new gear and not knowing definitely when it's coming :)

Anyone else get one of these after complaining?

"Dear (My Name),

Thank you for your recent inquiry. We apologize for any confusion.

Due to an unexpectedly high demand, we are unable to ship the following item(s) by the date that you were originally quoted:

MBPRO 15/2.0/1X1G/100/256VRAM will now ship on or before 02/28/06.

At this time, we do not have more specific information. Please note that product availability can change rapidly, and it is possible that your order may ship sooner than we anticipate. You may even receive a shipment confirmation between the time we send this email and the time that you read it.

We appreciate your business and apologize for any inconvenience this delay may have caused you.

Sincerely,

Sin City Retail Store

I have called my local apple retail store, and they are expecting a shipment in next week. Of course they probably get the same information that apple phone reps get. I always shop at the retail store when possible and with all the past and present announcements, they have been either exactly right or early when it comes to shipment items. All my apple store online orders have shown an estimated ship date, and once again they have either shipped on that date or earlier. I mean with everyone getting an email from apple saying that the reason the shipped date has been moved a week. It makes sense that if you wanted to change your order it would have been hard to do if they shipped on the 15th. So to make sure that everyone has a chance to change if they wanted to, moving the date back was for the better, and hey if you don't change the order a week for a free speed bump is not to much to ask.:D

I know everyone that complains about there orders being moved back, so for those who get upset with hearing that, let them vent it can be frustrating, but in the long run they are going to wait....

For those who are canceling orders to buy a Core Duo dell or other notebook, get off this thread and do it already....
