Hello, I'm in Denver, and I'm wondering if the Apple Stores will stock the higher end versions of the 17" MBP (i.e., fastest processor, most RAM, largest SSD disk, etc.). I ask because when I picked up another MBP from an Apple Store, the sales guy said that some of the processor options were not available in the store, and needed to be ordered online. Is there a way to find out which options a particular store stocks (obviously after Thursday)? Apologies for the noob question, I just wanted to get the update as quickly as possible, and have usually ordered online. Thanks!

They almost never have any upgraded computers in store. They'll install extra ram for you (because it's easy and takes about 5min, but they can charge you obscence amounts for it), but if you want a better resolution screen or faster processor, I doubt they'll have it in store

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148a Safari/6533.18.5)

Replace the SuperDrive? So there would be SSD and disc drives in the same compy? Otherwise, there would be no need to replace the SuperDrive right?

I would still replace the DVD drive. 1.75TB - 2TB of storage on two HDDs and the OS on the built in SSD would be fun. ;)

Maybe Apple considers the 11.6" MacBook Air the new MacBook.

They do, Apple.com "the next generation of macbooks"

I'd take an educated guess and say
1) Intel HD for 13"
2) nVidia 425M GT for 15"+

Though I would rather see them go with Ati but I'm guessing that just wont happen...

Any dedicated card with at least 512mb will do me, I would like to see a 1Gb GPU but I'm guessing that wont happen either.

To be honest, a 15" with 2 USB ports, LP, a core i5 at 2.6GHz 4Gb of DDR3 at 1333Mhz or maybe even 1600Mhz would be better. 10Hrs of battery, Matte screen, 1Tb of storage and I'm sold

Put it at a price of £1650 ($2000) and Ill walk into the store on Thursday, slap down cash and walk out a happy chap.

yeah.. NEVER buy any upgrades from Apple or their stores. They rape you without even giving you a hug afterwards. Get aftermarket upgrades from places like Newegg. You'll save a lot of cash that Apple doesn't need and you can use for accessories or apps.

For the last update, some stores had high res anti-glare models (bought my current MBP at a B&M Apple store) but as far as CPU upgrades, i don't think they ever order those.

So if you swap the superdrive for a SSD, you'd then end up with a notebook with three (!) disks: one small SSD for the system, the default classic HDD and then another SSD in the superdrive-bay?

I can only imagine the chaos in the Finder. That doesn't sound like Apple at all.

Don't the Sandy Bridge Chips only have 2 working SATA ports? If you had three one is going to wear down over time.

you don't need more than 16gb for OSX,
That depends on what you define as 'OS X', on my computer:
- /System: 5 GB
- /opt: 4 GB
- /Library: 12.5 GB
- /Applications: 26 GB
- /Developer: 10 GB

Total is ~58 GB, add a sleepimage (8 GB in my case) and maybe another potentially 8 GB for swap files and you are at 74 GB. (You certainly would want sleepimage and swap on the SSD, that is why the Air feels so fast.)

Worse, especially if Apple increases the native resolution.

damn.

I am crossing my fingers, and toes, and legs, and arms, and everything else I have for a dedicated gpu in the 13inch, and no superdrive.

I will end up buying either a 15" or 17" mbp for my first year in college, so I am also hoping apple packs the fastest GPU possible into them

The IGP in Arrandale wasn't on the same die. It required a separate soutbridge chip to control other functions. This southbridge chip has been eliminated with Sandy Bridge because the IGP is on the same die as the CPU. They have plenty of room for a discrete GPU.

After about 130 DPI, the usability of the screen for anything other than watching videos is questionable. That 13" Sony has a DPI of 169.

I had one of thoes sony VPC Z 's Comapny Issue and the screen was amazing for movies and General everyday office work

Exactly. UI elements are getting too small for the newer resolutions. Lion needs resolution independence badly. Apple was talking up resolution independence to developers years ago… What on earth happened?

I'd like to know too. Apple is so far ahead on so many things... and absurdly far behind on the OS's ability to handle a modern display. As a result, I think the standard 15" has been stuck at 114 dpi (1440x900) for something like six years.

The dock is resolution independent--shouldn't be too hard to extend that to the rest of the OS...

Anyone suggesting uploading things to Dropbox as an alternative to an optical drive is certifiable.

What internet utopia do you live in that ultra high speed download and upload is available at all times? It would take hours for me to upload 1-2 gigs of information on my ISP and it is currently the best available in my area.

Nor does it makes sense to try and upload/download gigs of photos or videos for my clients when I can burn them a copy with an optical drive in minutes.

The other alternative being offered is carrying around an external drive? What is the point of a portable computer if I have to carry around a case of attachments and peripherals just to complete basic tasks?

Some of you are crazy.
