This would be good, except how would it know what you want on your SSD(s) and HDD?

A possible explanation for that tiny 16GB SDD is that it's a LRU-Cache for /Library and /System plus spare 4 (or 8) GB for the hibernate file (depending on your RAM).

Aka you won't be able to place anything on that small SDD yourself.

Looks like a pretty decent upgrade, the new technology will be interesting though.

AppleInsider:
"MacGeneration has a respectable track record with Apple-related product leaks."

I'm not saying all of this is true (though I hope it is). But it certainly lends some credence to these claims.

i'm curious to see what they'll do in terms of graphics on the 13". If everything else mentioned here is true, I may trade in my top of the line 15" with one of these babies and im sure some other folk here may do the same thing too.

Likewise. The GPU in the new Macbooks will be the "make or break" point for me.

i just love news articles like this one, where some foreign site regurgitates news from some other news site such as mr, and then mr re-regurgitates it again not knowing that it originated here...

First time I've been REALLY excited about a MBP in a while. My first gen unibody 2.4 15" is getting a little long in the tooth and I think I could still get a decent price for it. I Would LOVE a 15" with hi-res matte screen, i5 and an SSD. I never use my superdrive, good riddance!

its not listed however if they are going to three USB ports and lightpeak then I think its safe to say the 13" loses its optical drive. Especially since its an option on the 15 and 17 to lose the optical drive but not the 13 it seems to indicate the 13 just won't have one

I hope so!

Of course, it will be possible like they offer it now. You just have to pay more.

256 GB SSD is very expensive.

From what it sounds like, it wouldn't be. And also I might just wait until the next gen X-25M comes out and get a 300GB one. Prices look to be coming down on those.

guys! best buy took the laptops off the website! remember how they accidently had them on? they took them off! they must be coming soon

The Sony is considerably thicker so therefore more room to stuff things in like higher performance processors. There is only so much you can do with a thin enclosure due to space constraints, ie. less room for larger heat sinks, fans, etc.

True... but its still pretty small.

If the 13in has better than Intel integrated graphics I am going to have a hard time not upgrading...

Question is if they are going to add a USB port and presumably a light peak port without losing the optical drive where are they going to put it? Maybe they will move the SD card slot over to the CD drive side.

EDIT: If they remove the optical drive and put a dedicated GPU in it's place I would be stoked but considering it still has better battery life than the 15in I kind of question if that would happen.

Most People won't use an optical drive in their life, I cannon imagine using a laptop with one.

2 years from now, dvd drives in laptops will be vintage

To watch on televisions?

I have never watched a DVD on my computer.
Why limit yourself to just tv, I (college students) can't afford to buy a television after using all my money on a macbook pro. I wouldn't use itunes too because my internet connection is too slow for downloading and its just more convienent to go to best buy and buy the disc.

Sounds like a regurgitation of the more recent rumors we've heard.

If Apple really does take the system-on-SSD route, they better have something in the OS to make it seamless for the user. Having to deal with two partitions will be hectic for the consumer.

Anything in that recent OS X seed suggesting better SSD support?

This...it'd be great if they started throwing in some TRIM support and if the hybrid drive thing is true, some good integration for it.

HD on all models can't correct. Many people my age would have trouble with eye strain. I can't look at a 17" NMBP without getting a headache. I know many with welcome this but there is also a percentage of the market that wouldn't so I don't think that will be true. I had to sell my 27" iMac because it just hurt my eyes

Unless you have extremely poor sight, I cannot believe it was the pixels that hurt your eyes. More likely LED backlighting. The pixel density isn't that great on the 27" displays. A very small percent have problems with the LED and those people are left out. I would suggest you try antiglare films to help.

I actually just did some research on this with a scientist for a consulting project. The findings show that many more suffer from the led backlights when close to the screen. An HDTV with LED can be great, but for computer users itcan be bad. We found the best results were to use an antiglare film, lower brightness, and sit slightly farther away.

Just wanted to share. Lion might bring resolution independence too.

I agree. People complain but coming from C2D, what do they expect? Maybe they will have it as an option, but then I don't want to hear complaints on battery life not being 13 hours.

It's because the c2d was the upper end of CPU's (when it was current). The core i3 is kinda the current budget model, it's offered in £399 laptops. Now performance aside to put the bottom end CPU of a range into a laptop costing over £1000 is a pisstake, even for Apple.

Student discount?

Is there anyone here a university student or possibly a teacher, basically anyone who has some experiences with education discounts? Right now I can save on the current macbook pro probably up to 150 pounds here in UK. So my question is how does it work when the new models are introduced, potentially priced differently. Is it gonna take some time for Apple to settle on new prices when it comes to these discounts or they come hand in hand with new models introduced. I'm just asking because I really need a laptop for my uni and I've been waiting for this release for quite some time now. Basically I want to order one asap, I'm just not sure if I'll be able to do that the same day they're out.

I guess I'll be headed down to the Apple Store on Thursday night. About time for an upgrade anyway - this screen resolution has become really unpleasant after the iPhone 4 was released...

There is a difference between resolution and dpi. The iPhone 4 has a high dpi. That's what you like, not the resolution.
