Prediction

If they can add a ssd and still shed .6 pounds from the machine, I'm wondering if these new macbook's will still carry a cd drive.

I think this move would certainly make sense, given that almost all media/software has now gone digital.

If this does become true, hopefully they'll pair the announcement with a superdrive price-cut. Or maybe one free in every box.

$99... give me a break.

It isn't meant for your apps, it is meant for the OS alone, quick boot times etc and 16gb is enough for that.

so would the developer tools be installed on the other drive? currently its not possible to install the SDK developer tools on any other drive other than the 1 with the OS on it. this will be interesting...

i currently have a 64gb SSD in place of the DVD drive and that runs the OS as well as the developer tools, which take up over 8GB and Adobe CS5 which is over 6GB so... hope apple has figured this out well. and of that 64gb about 18GB is free, the other 500gb HDD is for itunes and my massive data set.

SSD Baby! <20 boot time with everything up and ready for work!

Assuming they keep the dimensions the same for the ODD and SSD options, a possibility is that the extra space around the SSD will be used for extra battery storage. That would be neat.

Wake me up when Apple gets on board with the future and integrates Blu-Ray.

An HD screen with crappy worthless streaming media. Sweet!!!

Blueray is worthless. It's sad how many people are brainwashed into thinking they need it.

SaWEEET!
Yeah I fixed my typo...I have a glossy now and love it.
Well even though you're getting one MBP, know that you just helped me tons and made my day. Thanks man.

Yeah, I have a 2010 mbp. I'm not getting a new one i'm just drooling over all of those who are getting the new one lol.

Optical drive obviously have more use than to burn disc, wake me up when games/large applications are avaliable via USB, right now most of them are avaliable in dvd/blu-ray format. Steam doesn't work for me because my download speed is slow.

Also, downloading a video/movie vs just buying the blu-ray/dvd in best buy. I choose the latter one, thank you very much. And base on stats most people agree with me too, I just want something that "just works" instead of waiting hours just to download a movie.

What stats are you talking about? Just because people are buying a computer with an optical drive (~99% of PCs - meaning, not iOS devices, etc.), does not mean that 100% of those people are actually using them (the optical drives, or whatever other componenets for that matter).

I'll say it again, they DO have their function/purpose/whatever. I also would prefer to have one. I'm just saying if the new models are lacking it, that it would NOT be the dumbest idea ever... to have something equally or more useful in it's place, like more storage, or battery life, etc.

how the fudge are you going to rip "it" if you don't have a dvd drive in the first place?
Somehow they think its a great idea to pay extra for functions (external drive) that used to be included. Some even prefers not having this pracitcal function just so their laptop can look better, for that logic i am just speechless.

awesome.

this sounds amazing, I really wonder why apple doesnt announce products instead of people finding out stuff through rumors...

The only thing I've used my optical drive for in the last few years, is when someone gives me a CD with pics on it. Won't be able to use it if I opt against the optical. Guess I can always hand it back to them with a thumb drive.

How are you going to charge a MBP if it does not have power supply built in? Judging by how often people carry around their power supplies or external disks, one would guess that having the option to replace the optical drive with a power supply or a second storage volume would be popular with these people.

If you need additional storage once per week and an optical drive once per month, which one would you prefer to be build in and which to be external?

please, no Apple laptops have graphics "cards"

Any dedicated card with at least 512mb will do me, I would like to see a 1Gb GPU but I'm guessing that wont happen either.

All Apple laptops have either integrated graphics (the GPU is part of the CPU or northbridge package) or discrete graphics (a separate GPU chip soldered to the motherboard (with a VRAM chip or two nearby).

None of the notebooks have the GPU on a removeable card.

No "cards" except in the Mac Pro and some Imacs.
