Yeah, I have a 2010 mbp. I'm not getting a new one i'm just drooling over all of those who are getting the new one lol.

So do I have to tell the guy at the store I want a MBP i5 500gb with updated HD Display?

I'd rather look like an idiot now getting this question out of the way instead of sounding like a fool in there lol

If Light Peak is going to be brought out Thursday, what other products are going to be utilizing the technology on Thursday also? I mean if you buy a new Apple laptop with the technology what products will you be able to use with it?

Anyone suggesting uploading things to Dropbox as an alternative to an optical drive is certifiable.

What internet utopia do you live in that ultra high speed download and upload is available at all times? It would take hours for me to upload 1-2 gigs of information on my ISP and it is currently the best available in my area.

Nor does it makes sense to try and upload/download gigs of photos or videos for my clients when I can burn them a copy with an optical drive in minutes.

The other alternative being offered is carrying around an external drive? What is the point of a portable computer if I have to carry around a case of attachments and peripherals just to complete basic tasks?

Some of you are crazy.

No worries mate. You can always load your photos onto a high capacity SD card to give to your clients. The new ones can hold more than a CD ever could. This is the future. Sorry to break it to ya, but the optical drives are a dead/dying technology. This totally reminds me of when People freaked out when Steve Jobs released the first iMac WITHOUT a floppy drive. Same thing.

Most people don't burn discs anymore, or even watch DVDs on their laptop when they can download or stream movies much easier. even Netflix is converting to a streaming model. The writing is on the wall. People stopped buying music CDs awhile ago, and the same will happen with movie DVDs and Blue Ray. Look around...all the big CD and DVD superstores have closed and gone out of business. Virgin Superstores, Tower Video, BlockBuster etc etc.

Embrace the inevitable.

Having said that, I have no idea wether Apple will phase the SuperDrive out of the Macbook pros on this update. but I for one hope so. The sooner the better if you ask me. That space could be put to such better use! Think of the possibilities. :)

My Best Buy in Little Rock, AR just received a new shipment of the current generation MacBook Pro's. I don't think we are going to see a refresh this Thursday. Just my opinion.......:(

eh, unless you are a video guy or a programmer you probably wont notice it. Get the low end model and put an SSD in it with the extra 300. That would be better use of the extra $300

Yeah I agree the SSD makes a big difference. The MacBook Air demonstrates this in ways I never imagined possible.

not yet :p i and im sure wherever BSmith9518 agree with me :p because i am going to be majoring as a graphic designer i will need an ODD

Well, as a physician, I won't. :) I just want my MacBook to be a 'Pro' not an 'Air.'

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

Im not trying to flame or anything i am just curious, why do you care about the graphics card so much? For what do u use it? Becouse i have the MBP with a 9400m and the 9600gt and i almost never use the Gt.

I am also not trying to flame and just curious, why do you not care about the products that you buy? You did realize macbook is already a lot more expensive than most laptop in the market, right? And yet they provide you with an inferior graphic card and you are supposed to be happy about paying premium for it?

For those who said they don't care because the machine does what they want, don't listen to them. The statement itself make no sense because if a pentium 4 laptop can do what they want to do, are they going to overpay for it too? Also, they are trying to justify their purchase to make themselves feel better, that itself had no problems. However, it would not be a fair comment/guide for those who are looking to buy a new laptop.

According to the French article the 13" would have a 16GB SSD for system files and a 320GB HDD with a BTO option for either a 500GB HDD or 256GB SSD. It seems to indicate the 15" would have a 16GB SSD and a 320 or 500GB HDD plus a BTO option for an additional SSD in place of the optical drive. So up to 3 drives in the 15" then.

Something about this doesn't seem quite right.

Don't know if this have already been mentioned, but maybe this 8 or 16 GB SSD for system files actually means that they will have a Mac OSX Install USB flash drive instead the ol' trusty DVDs ... like the Late 2010 MacBook Air. Just a thought. I really hope I can have no ODD and two 2,5" SSD drives of my own choice installled in these new MBPs. Would prefer that instead of one of those MBA SSD sticks plus one regular 2,5" SATA slot. Configurability, please!

I keep thinking back to that Intel image and how they have had a few whoopsies in the past.

Be true.

Yeah, you're definitely in a dream world. Or Japan. There's a reason Best Buy dedicates the whole friggin center of their store to optical media.

Reality is this: if this leak is to be believed, Apple is making it AN OPTION. Which is fine. I don't know what it is with some of you elitists who don't like choice. If you want to gut your crap and remove the optical go ahead. Those who want to keep it can do so. CHOICE, people. Don't try to force it. Using floppies is not an accurate comparison because movies and music were never released on floppies.

Blueray is worthless. It's sad how many people are brainwashed into thinking they need it.

Download is not ready yet. It's sad how many people are brainwashed by Steve Jobs to think that they don't need optical drive to install large applications.

so whats a realistic idea of what the 13' MBP will be like? I'm hearing a ton of different things and it be nice for someone to step up and diagnosis this bad boy because i'm sure im not the only one who wants to know! :D

How is it somehow easier to just put your dvd/blu-ray drive and "just works" verus downloading a few hours just to watch a movie, and for streaming, what happens if you are in a places without internet connection?

That's why they have an external ODD!

you mean it make sense to buy an external drive just to have a function which used to be included? Genius! I bet you love the convenience to bring out an extra drive just to watch a movie/download applications, that sounds like fun?

I humbly think that is not totally true for everyone.... I'm still buying music CDs & Blu-ray movie discs & I've yet to purchase my first music or movie download. In fact, I just bought Adele's 21 (Deluxe Edition) CD from my local Target about an hour ago. I guess based on what you said, I really need to make an appointment ASAP with my doctor to have my brain thoroughly checked out as it seems like something is damn wrong with me. :(

I might need to upgrade my aging 2008 MBP. It's still trucking along, but this new technology and incredible upgrade is going to be hard to pass up. If they do a redesign, I'll be looking into it.
