I humbly think that is not totally true for everyone.... I'm still buying music CDs & Blu-ray movie discs & I've yet to purchase my first music or movie download. In fact, I just bought Adele's 21 (Deluxe Edition) CD from my local Target about an hour ago. I guess based on what you said, I really need to make an appointment ASAP with my doctor to have my brain thoroughly checked out. :(

Wait. You've never downloaded a song? WTF.

Wake me up when Apple gets on board with the future and integrates Blu-Ray.

An HD screen with crappy worthless streaming media. Sweet!!!

I'd argue theyre AHEAD of the future. Physical media is going away. pulling the SuperDrive. Why add another physical drive? The machines are bluray capable if you have 1080p digital copy. I happen to have 125 or more all digital 1080p. Three years and all those bluray drives in windows machines will be going away.

you mean it make sense to buy an external drive just to have a function which used to be included? Genius!

For the average consumer now it doesn't matter if they have an ODD. However, I do realize that many ppl use it for work or school. I was just stating a point :)

According to the French article the 13" would have a 16GB SSD for system files and a 320GB HDD with a BTO option for either a 500GB HDD or 256GB SSD. It seems to indicate the 15" would have a 16GB SSD and a 320 or 500GB HDD plus a BTO option for an additional SSD in place of the optical drive. So up to 3 drives in the 15" then.

so on the 13", if you use an optibay, you can add an extra HD instead of ODD, in other words, it's got 3 drives, same deal as the 15".

This is a stupid comparison because picking storage would mean storage only, whereas if you pick optical drive you will have the best of both worlds...BOTH optical drive and storage...
You do not get it. Two options:
a) Built-in OOD + 1 TB HDD + external 1 TB HDD
b) Built-in 1 TB HDD + second built-in 1 TB HDD

If you need 2 TB once per week and an optical drive once per month, you would need to carry an external device with you 50 times/year with option (a) and 12 times/year with option (b).

Which option would be preferable, the option that requires you to carry external devices more often with you or the one which requires this less?

Firewire is an absolute MUST for me. I have a $400 Firewire 8-channel audio interface that is my home base for audio recording, and I'd rather not have to sell it. Unless they either have a light peak -> Firewire converter on day one, I'm out of the camp that will be able to purchase this thing.

Secondly, I'm going to need to instantly upgrade to a 500GB drive to hold all my audio VI samples. Obviously, that means no SSD (thankfully, doesn't look like it's going to happen). As long as I can swap out what measly drive they put in there with a 7200rpm 500GB, I'll be happy.

Third, it would be NICE if they kept the optical. Not a requirement, but nice. First of all, I'm going to need to re-install everything once I swap out the HD, and to do that, I'm going to want DVDs. I also have a 13+DVD Library of audio VIs that are going to be a PAIN to install if I don't have an optical.

Best outcome: they introduce Light Peak AND keep the Fire 800. Or they have a cheap Light Peak -> Fire converter out on day one.

Im not trying to flame or anything i am just curious, why do you care about the graphics card so much? For what do u use it? Becouse i have the MBP with a 9400m and the 9600gt and i almost never use the Gt.

install gfxstatus and have the mbp switch graphics automatically when you're on battery / shore power and you'll use the 9600gt more, and appreciate it also.

No, no, no! Just because someone doesn't constantly burn discs, or rip discs, or play games, doesn't mean that they won't utilize OTHER features of a Pro.

My Best Buy in Little Rock, AR just received a new shipment of the current generation MacBook Pro's. I don't think we are going to see a refresh this Thursday. Just my opinion.......:(

My Best Buy never has the latest Apple stuff until weeks afterward, so this isn't surprising and likely doesnt mean anything. I've asked them before about this and they usually say they're waiting for the Apple display people to come in and reset the table. Likelier than not the refresh is happening this week and Best buy won't have the new ones on display until March.

I'm happy to see two things:
1. Matte screen
2. Consolidation of product lines: no more macbook

Should they just call them all macbooks now? Or will it be macbook pro for all?

The SSD option is too soon. The benefit is minimal compared to the loss of capacity. I'm more excited to see regular 2.5" hard drives available in 750GB at 7200rpm and 1TB at 5400rpm for reasonable prices. I've heard 7200rpm drives of 1TB are available but are very expensive.

Are you high? The performance increase of a good SSD is palpable. XBench on a MBP i7 2.8 w/ SSD = 339 compared to XBench of same machine with clean 7200 500GB HDD = 164. That's a 100% performance increase.

No worries mate. You can always load your photos onto a high capacity SD card to give to your clients. The new ones can hold more than a CD ever could. This is the future. Sorry to break it to ya, but the optical drives are a dead/dying technology...

Yeah, I am guessing that Apple might drop optical drives next year. I too stopped using CDs/discs. I put my music on my MP3 player. I have all my movies in MKV format on my terabyte drives. I transfer files through the network or on thumbdrives. If anyone gives me a disc, I just copy the files to my computer and then throw it away.

There will still be need for blurays in the near future because they can hold 50gb of data. Once we start seeing 64gb SD cards we can expect that the next generation Hollywood media will be a flash memory card. Discs have a lag time which I hate. I wish the ISPs would start giving you 50mbps speeds so we can watch streaming FullHD videos.

Well, they're new for Arkansas! ;)

Sorry man, as a fellow Southerner I couldn't resist. Didn't want some Yankee takin' your lay-up. I'm sure this is just supply working through the system. Maybe they'll make you a deal on one. I think we're gettin' new MBPs this week, even down South. :D

that explains why there are still a lot of people buying optical disc in movies/applications/music, because for some reason they are not average consumer to you : P

I do apologize for somewhat overreacting though, its just that point just doesn't make any sense and somehow a lot of people keep using it.

not yet :p i and im sure wherever BSmith9518 agree with me :p because i am going to be majoring as a graphic designer i will need an ODD

I DO agree, wholeheartedly! :D

Yeah, you're definitely in a dream world. Or Japan. There's a reason Best Buy dedicates the whole friggin center of their store to optical media.

Reality is this: if this leak is to be believed, Apple is making it AN OPTION. Which is fine. I don't know what it is with some of you elitists who don't like choice. If you want to gut your crap and remove the optical go ahead. Those who want to keep it can do so. CHOICE, people. Don't try to force it. Using floppies is not an accurate comparison because movies and music were never released on floppies.

Right on, brotha. Stop arguing about it, and just don't choose the damn option.

i know someone who just bought a MBP 13" 2 weeks ago, can they return it and get the "upgraded one" thursday for no charge if it is still the same price?

you mean it make sense to buy an external drive just to have a function which used to be included? Genius! I bet you love the convenience to bring out an extra drive just to watch a movie/download applications, that sounds like fun?

I know this discussion is getting ridiculous..and it's really sad how steve jobs did brainwash these people. DVD's and CD's would become obsolete when they stop making the DVDs and CDs, there is still a market for them, and I for example use the MACBOOK PRO to edit soccer videos for little kids league and I sell every copy I burn to a DVD...it just wouldn't be a pro feature to not have an integrated optical drive...sometimes I want to edit on the go, and having an external optical is just absurd and takes away from the mobility...APPLE is really getting ridiculous with this taking out/putting back features..

All in all i'm excited for this refresh but at the same time I'm scared because I know for sure we will lose something, whether it's the SD, the firewire, or something IDK, but it's typical apple to leave features so people can be brainwashed into buying their next generation of overpriced products.

So do I have to tell the guy at the store I want a MBP i5 500gb with updated HD Display?

I'd rather look like an idiot now getting this question out of the way instead of sounding like a fool in there lol

They will most likely have that config in the stores. If not, just order online.

He's then going to say Glossy or Matte and your going to say.........

So wait, if we opt for the SSD over the ODD, does that mean we'll have 3 hard drives? The small one for the OS and two others?
