Idk how many times I will have to say it. There is a MacBook air and a Mac book pro for a reason. There is 2 the separeation will stay unless there is an option to have the ODD or not. There is too many factors at this point to calculate the use for an ODD in the pros. We hear majority will not use the ODD more than 10 times or less the whole time we own the laptop. Yet the regular user there is just not a calculable percentage, or take the chance not to put it in at least as an option. I'm sorry ODD is a dying tech but it's not dead yet.

Even if most of what I said is wrong there must be people who agree.

i know someone who just bought a MBP 13" 2 weeks ago, can they return it and get the "upgraded one" thursday for no charge if it is still the same price?

I believe there's a 45 exchange period if there's a product update. Can anyone confirm this?

Riiight, because the only difference between a Macbook Air and a Macbook Pro is an optical drive.
Where in my posts here did I refer to the Macbook Air, directly or indirectly? You are mixing up the posts of multiple people in your mind.

Firewire is an absolute MUST for me. I have a $400 Firewire 8-channel audio interface that is my home base for audio recording, and I'd rather not have to sell it. Unless they either have a light peak -> Firewire converter on day one, I'm out of the camp that will be able to purchase this thing.

Secondly, I'm going to need to instantly upgrade to a 500GB drive to hold all my audio VI samples. Obviously, that means no SSD (thankfully, doesn't look like it's going to happen). As long as I can swap out what measly drive they put in there with a 7200rpm 500GB, I'll be happy.

Third, it would be NICE if they kept the optical. Not a requirement, but nice. First of all, I'm going to need to re-install everything once I swap out the HD, and to do that, I'm going to want DVDs. I also have a 13+DVD Library of audio VIs that are going to be a PAIN to install if I don't have an optical.

Best outcome: they introduce Light Peak AND keep the Fire 800. Or they have a cheap Light Peak -> Fire converter out on day one.

agree. FW800 is a must for me. Just keep it as is and add the lightpeak port.

I'm assuming that the replacement of the optical drive with an SSD is in addition to the regular hard drive bay. I was actually looking in to this with an aftermarket solution.

Overall, sounds like a nice update that I will certainly be taking advantage of.

Still will be pissed if they charge extra for (the previously standard and FREE) matte finish on the display. But, at least, the HD version will be standard.

Also a surprise bonus is the longer battery life and nearly half-pound in weight reduction. Super excited about that.

Light Peak? It sounds like it will eventually replace all the other ports with this single universal one. I'm psyched, but will certainly wait and see how cool this ends up being.

I'd argue theyre AHEAD of the future. Physical media is going away. pulling the SuperDrive. Why add another physical drive? The machines are bluray capable if you have 1080p digital copy. I happen to have 125 or more all digital 1080p. Three years and all those bluray drives in windows machines will be going away.

As you know very well, your 1080p copies are not even close in quality to what BluRay movie is. As far as being "ahead of future" is not it s bad thing? I am sure future laptops will not have touchpads. Do you think Apple should drop them now?

Yes, unfortunately that's 100% true. But what is wrong with that, especially when I can buy what I want on an optical disc?

You could save a ton of money! You wouldn't have to buy entire albums, but just the songs you want. Not to mention the convenience of downloading music while traveling, or away from your computer. I mean, if you buy a CD, you can't do **** with it until it's on your computer, and transferred to your iPod/iPhone/iPad.

+1903812390 i agree completely!

so whats a realistic idea of what the 13' MBP will be like? I'm hearing a ton of different things and it be nice for someone to step up and diagnosis this bad boy because i'm sure im not the only one who wants to know! :):apple:

exactly my point, it's not dead yet. Optical drive becomes obsolete when DVD's would no longer be sold. Its just like the floppy, the floppy stopped died when the CD came out...yet Blu Rays are not sold in jump drives, they're not downloadable online, it just hasn't been replaced. Plus not everyone is in to pay for songs...I don't download illegally but for me it's much cheaper to buy a CD at walmart and rip it on itunes for my whole family.

Blueray is worthless. It's sad how many people are brainwashed into thinking they need it.

It's sad how you view Bluray as a need. People WANT bluray because it has a nice view. It is absolutely awesome stuff. More appealing and pleasing to the eye. It isn't worthless. To you, maybe...because you're in denial.

it just wouldn't be a pro feature to not have an integrated optical drive...sometimes I want to edit on the go, and having an external optical is just absurd and takes away from the mobility.
And it just would not be a pro feature to have a display smaller than 15/17". Sometimes one really needs more than 13" and having to connect to an external display is just absurd and takes away from the mobility.

is it just me or are other people refreshing apple.com hoping for something to happen every 3 sec xD

After about 130 DPI, the usability of the screen for anything other than watching videos is questionable. That 13" Sony has a DPI of 169.

so whats the point of the retina on the iphone and the wishes of a retina in the ipad?

don't ask silly questions. if apple uses hi-res screens, we like it. if others use hi-res screens, we don't like it.

Theres not an apple store for 30 miles. Im just gonna use my 8gb flashdrive to transfer my music back over to another computer then bring it back over once i buy a new one. Write down all the programs i downloaded and download them again once i get the new one. Pain the ass for about an hour then i'll be happy! Thanks for the advice

No, no, no! Just because someone needs to burn discs, or rip discs, or play games, doesn't mean that they need to buy an external drive that used to be included in the macbook.

If the Superdrive stays, it will be the same old Superdrive that's been around for years. Why would you want that so badly, when you can buy a much faster, and easily replaceable external Blu-Ray/DVD/CD burner? That's the only way Blu-Ray is going to happen.

I still don't know how anyone can handle the tiny 13". I get annoyed with it enough when I use one at the library.
