Awesome update for the 13" if this is true. I held off the previous generation due to the core2 processor and lower res screen. 1440x900 is just about perfect for a 13" screen. SSD for the system drive is genius-- you don't need more than 16gb for OSX, and everything else can be stored on a standard internal hard drive. 3 USB ports is better still. I don't have a current use for lightpeak but its cool if they're including it. Hopefully, firewire is not being dropped on the 13" model-- this is my biggest fear as I still use it for video editing. May have to spring for the 15" if they drop it from the 13" (which may be their plan if they drop the white Macbook).

For those whining, face it you can't afford a Mac anyway and are probably stay at home kids who have nothing better to do than b*tch about Apple products on web forums.

Go to the Apple Store, and just buy a cheap external hardrive from there, The apple geniuses will help you back up your computer, and they will update your computer for you. External Hardrives are pretty cheap now anyways, like maybe 80 bucks minimum... I doubt you have THAT much stuff on your computer if its only a week old...

Theres not an apple store for 30 miles. Im just gonna use my 8gb flashdrive to transfer my music back over to another computer then bring it back over once i buy a new one. Write down all the programs i downloaded and download them again once i get the new one. Pain the ass for about an hour then i'll be happy! Thanks for the advice

8GB ram on 17 inch? Uhhh...?

iMac still comes with 4GB ram standard. 17 inch MBP will beat iMac in specs? Really?

Man this might make me want to move back to the 13". I really loved the size of my old 1st gen Macbook but when I upgraded last year I wanted more screen resolution so I ended up going with the 15" high-res.

I guess it depends on the graphics performance that the 13" gets.

I wonder if those battery numbers are with Apple's newer more strict battery tests (Like the MBA).

to remove the white mac book would be really stupid. there is no visual difference anymore, it seems like every mac is now the same boring aluminum and black keys. terrible! where is the individuality?

i hope apple is making a new mac book (entry mac), maybe in 5 colors (white, black, blue, orange, pink!

ps: steve jobs as you have not seen him before: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FW-lrMXLBE

Uh, the white macbook is the ugly duckling in the entire mac line, they should kill it asap. It's the only non-metal product they sell. Individuality? Are they selling white plastic imacs along with the aluminum ones? No, cause they're outdated. Apple stands to gain from killing the white macbook, as its the least sleek product they sell and looks out of place. The iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, iMac, mac mini, etc don't seem to have trouble selling bc of their lack of 'individuality' and neither will their notebook line.

And these rumored specs look awesome.

so... first there were rumors saying the MBP's were gonna get a bigger trackpad and SSD for the OS.

Now, we're hearing theyre to get the option for SSD instead of the optical drive? It just seems like these "insiders" just browsed through the macrumors forum and just arbitrarily guessed at what the new MBPs are going to have.

If you guess enough times, someone's bound to be half right

You could buy a cheap $50 usb hard drive and use TimeMachine...

i3 vs i5 in 13"?

I see a lot of people complaining about only an i3 in the 13"? Can somebody tell me why this is such a "disappointment"? Won't it still be the new sandy bridge technology? And won't it still be an upgrade over the intel core 2 duo? That seemed to run fine on the Pro's.

Can somebody give me some insight on this? Thanks.

I'm not following the point of the 3rd USB port on the 13" MBP - anybody who's seen the logic board of one knows there's not any room to add one without either sticking it someplace weird (other side?) or dropping one of the other ports. Given the slow uptake of USB3 by Intel, it seems unlikely that Apple would drop the FW800 port for a *slower* USB2 port...

The other alternative is that the source couldn't tell the difference between USB and Light Peak (some of the prototype connectors did look similar).

- Matte screen option on the higher-end 13"

This better become standard, or an option that costs nothing extra.
I don't want to pay $300 for a higher end 13" and then another $100-$200 for a matte screen.

Apple has better screen quality, not necessarily higher resolution. Perhaps they don't think that 1920x1080 is usable on that size of a screen – not without resolution independence, for example.

Exactly. UI elements are getting too small for the newer resolutions. Lion needs resolution independence badly. Apple was talking up resolution independence to developers years ago… What on earth happened?

So if you swap the superdrive for a SSD, you'd then end up with a notebook with three (!) disks: one small SSD for the system, the default classic HDD and then another SSD in the superdrive-bay?

I can only imagine the chaos in the Finder. That doesn't sound like Apple at all.

yea I don't think this is right. maybe you get discrete graphics instead of ODD

Also i think the 16gb drive will be hidden, and unaccessible mostly.
Of course it will be hackable though

Such detailed specs but no mention of the graphics card? That's disappointing.

I'd also think that they'd update the mini at this time too as it and the 13" models share similar specs.

I'd take an educated guess and say
1) Intel HD for 13"
2) nVidia 425M GT for 15"+

Though I would rather see them go with Ati but I'm guessing that just wont happen...

I guess I'll be headed down to the Apple Store on Thursday night. About time for an upgrade anyway - this screen resolution has become really unpleasant after the iPhone 4 was released...
